I'm currently running lvl 1's in a Rifter, and I'm happy with my set-up. I am, however, curious about whether to use autocannons, or arties. My ship has enough speed to keep range, or get in range. I'm just wondering, if the alpha damage of small arties is better over AC's.

AC
level 1 baddies are so weak that even auto-cannons will likely alpha the majority of them..

Edited by: Monsena on 26/09/2009 06:45:05 However weak ships in lv1 may be I always liked range and seeing them blinking yellow and die before they ever got in to locking range. I had Rifter with 2x artillery and 2x missiles, it destroyed stuff up to 30 km and I did all lv2 missions in this ship with ease. But ether way you shouldn't have any problems in lv1 with Rifter, with arties you gona tank less thou. |

Arty, in general, is safe and slow. ACs are hairier but kill things faster. L1s aren't dangerous anyway, so go AC and kill it all faster.
The missions with the smaller target lists might be faster done in an Arty boat that can one-shot them during the time it'd take to close to AC range, but small arty doesn't kill things from that far out when you consider the Rifter's speed of closing...

Work with artys. They're actually effective against groups of enemies, since you can pick them off at range, and generally kite groups (even by orbiting) with an afterburner. I've handed T1'd 250/SML rifters to the random corp newbie in the past, and they've never been let down by them, and I've used a T2'd 250/SML rifter in FW missions to good effect as well. There's also the curious benefit of very low ammo consumption on the artys, with helps your bottom line a little and your cargo space more noticably.
Autocannons are great for speed-tanking cruisers or battleships, and for PvP, but are too short-ranged for L1 missions and some midsec belts on account of having a fragile ship and a moderate amount of damage pointed your way. ----------------------------------
Industrialist. I build it. You buy it. You break it and buy another one. Market domination through ingue ferrogue. (I did this and could have stopped it.) |

naw, it's those odd-everyday missions my R&D agent gives me, and maybe some on the side for some extra standings, but I'm not going into them. It's mainly that they spawn round 10-40km range, and even though I can do over 700m/s it's a drag to fly into range. I'm hoping I can pick most off with Arties before I have to start dictating range. I'm fine with AC's, as my tank is very sufficient so far, rather overtanked even. Guess I should just try it. Not like he guns cost anything (no T2 yet, but even those are cheap) Thanks for the replies, and sorry to those, that wasted their 5 mins to the flood control >.<

Why use a rifter for artillery when you can use a thrasher? You can make 2 or 3 arty groups and alpha each target in lvl 1 missions. Or if you still want something frigate-sized and speedy, a breacher with standard missiles works. both have superior firepower at long distance, in the case of the breacher, more range.
If you're not wanting to spend extra ISK on a new ship, (although you should have a thrasher anyway for salvage), you'll need to fit AC's on a rifter to approach the other ships killing speed.

No Thrasher, as I'm not going to train Destroyers for this, having Minmatar frig at lvl 4 already. Same goes for missiles with your Breacher idea. And salvaging in lvl 1 missions is a waste of time. For the occasional standings blitz is the best way to go anyway.

ACs. rifter is fast, and L1s are generally short.
