I didn't find anything similar to this idea in the sticky or when browsing through the forum so here goes.
Alot of games I have played have had random events (usually bad ones) pop up from time to time. For instance in one of my favorite empire building games, Civilization, where random natural disasters could strike and ruin your day (or your opponents he he).
What if some random events where to be introduced into EVE solar systems centered around that bright, pretty ball of fire in the middle of it all? After the launch of Apocrypha, which had the cool video trailer of a huge shockwave blowing away a whole planet, a POS and an Orca this idea started to take form. After watching the movie Knowing I thought I'd formulate it even more :)
Basically the idea is that from time to time solar flares will go of and possibly make somones day alot worse than it had to be. The magnitude of such flares could be of various severity and the effects would dissapate as you would go further out from the star.
The effects could be that any POS or ship caught in the blast might be damaged (even destroyed?!?) or it's electronics systems shut down for a short period of time.
Now I know having such random events that you can not control at all would and could kind of suck if you have put time and effort into putting up a POS somewhere and it gets destroyed BUT what if you would be given a new type of probe, solar probes, that would allow you to make a judgement on how severe or how likely a solar flare could be in your solar system? You could then make a call based on that and build your POS with better defences (better resists etc) or plan to evacuate if there is a high probability of a severe solar flare.
I think this could add some interesting affects to the game where POS placement is concerned and even spice up the odd fleet battle when everyone suddenly gets hit by one of these flares and loses target lock and 25% of their/shields armor
But that's basically the idea, what do you think folks? |

I don't think it is a particularly good idea to have it be damaging, just imagine a guy having a nice day mining in his bantam and then BOOOOOM!!!! Owned by nature.... not fun the idea has promise, but perhaps make it a little less painful! perhaps... a decrease/increase in sig radius/sensor strength, also mabye make the timing somewhat predictable while the effect more random. still has an effect without the WTFBBQ factor!

This sounds like a painful idea as you have only suggested negative random effects. We also already have a fairly random effect in the game, Exploration, where you use probes to find different sites and wormholes, being both dangerous and rewarding. The exploration part of the game is probably as far as it needs to go taking it to the level you have proposed seems a bit harsh. My position in the corp "Logistics Coordinator" just a fancy name for Janitor. |

I thought EVE was suppose to be harsh But alright it doesn't have to be all out destructive and of course there could be some sort of warning message that your on board computer might give you before one of these things go off.
I just think that the current EVE universe is a bit to neutral as in I would like to see more things in this game you can not control in any way. In a real solar system there are lots of things you can not control. Why not bring that realism partly into EVE?
Exploration is nice and all but it doesn't influence you unless you go out looking for it. I hope you get my point and see the difference there.
