Hi!
Ok, so some background first. Started playing this game a couple of weeks ago now and I've established that I want to focus on PVP and maybe join up with a merc corp or something similar down the road.
Currently I've setup a secondary account which will focus on station trading. Hopefully this should mean that eventually I will be able to fund my activities in a self suffcient manner.
Now with this in mind I should not need to run missions or exploration for cash if i can trade sucessfully. So my thinking for my PVP character is to focus down on frigate PVP to start with, eventually moving to an assault frigate. Would this be a good strategy? I can see that corps like Noir Academy require that recruits be able to fly a t2 frigate before joining.
This leaves me with a question of race and skills to train towards.
So: 1. What would be the most effective race to train for a brand new PVP character? It seems armoured fleets seem to be the regular thing for PVP from what I read. So Amarr or Gallente? Or should I be another guy in a Rifter, is Minmatar really that effective? If you guys could suggest a race, the reasoning and a suggested long-term ship progression that would be great!
2. Skills. What order should I train for things in? At the moment I have most support skills up to 3 and drones to 5. Currently training engineering and electronics up to 5, then the required skills for thermodynamics (science 5). But where should i got next? My intention is to fly t1 frigs for PVP for now.
From what i can see the options are, t2 tank (plus armour compensation), t2 weps (for the race i choose), t2 drones and t2 frigs (assault frigates). In which order should I begin training all this?
My plan for the immediate future is to go roaming in frigs (of which race i pick) and go get blown up while trying to kill stuff. Seems to be the suggested plan on the forums. But if you guys could help with race and skills for my long-term future that would be brilliant!

First, I'll save you 15$/month by noting that you don't need an alt account to do station trading, a same-account alt with a week or so of skills will do you just fine.
As for the rest:
1. All the races have perfectly legit frigate categories, my primary advice would be to initially pick just one and get it operating well before spreading out to other weapon systems and racial ships.
2. Support skills like what you've mentioned are a good start. The big one you're missing (beyond the frig skills of the race you pick and the corresponding weapon skills) would be Navigation. Nav skills are, I'd argue, even more important than tank skills for the frigate size category, no tank in the world will save your paper-thin arse but a couple extra radians/sec can put you into the "unhittable" category.
Prioritize getting T2 guns or missiles corresponding to your racial bonuses over getting T2 drones unless you're aiming for the Iskur specifically. Grab racial frigate 4 as soon as possible, upgrade it to V when you can.
The general order I'd advise to get flying fast would be (racial frigate 4) -> (weapons to 3/4 and secondary weapon skills to 3) -> (relevant navigation skills to 3/4) -> (finish maxing your fitting/support skills to V) -> (get t2 weapons) ->(get t2 tank) -> (racial frigate V and prereqs for T2 frigs)
... all this of course assumes you wanna stick with frigates forever, which you may end up not wanting to do. An additional advantage of that training order is that it lets you branch off to other ships basically whenever you want with your skills still applicable to most things until the last few steps. |

Don't forget gunnery support skills: motion prediction, controlled bursts, rapid firing, sharpshooter, surgical strike and trajectory analysis.
Train up weapon upgrades/advanced weapon upgrades to allow tighter fits. |

All races are good for PVP although Amarr is not good frigate-wise (lacking midslots). On the other hand, their battleships are really nice.

Bullshit. Every one of the Amarr frigate hulls is good, especially post-t1-buff, save for maybe the interceptors. |

Start with something like a rifter or incursis, move on to a thrasher or a catalyst, from there a thorax or something, after that hurricane or drake. That's how most people would probably do it.
Skill wise, pick your ship for long term goals and get the skills to match it. If you are going drake you want missiles and shield skills for example. All I hear is goons this and goons that, it's like you people are the villiagers from goons village. |

It can tackle bigger ships with no problem (the ones that don't need to be webbed for your gang to catch up), but AB frigates can elude it. It deserves mention that it has a lot of HP without bloating its sig radius.
For a scram-web tackler, use the Tormentor. It's great now. Rifterlings - Small gang lowsec combat corp specializing in frigates and cruisers (all races, not just Rifters!). My heavily biased opinion is follow this guys advice :D
Start flying rifters. Allows you to solo in your T2 frigates (Wolf/Jag) when you get there and get into Thrashers which are pretty awesome dessies, then train towards Ruppy, Cane etc.
To be honest race doesn't matter to much, eventually you'll train for the ships you want to fly, regardless of race. I find what ships I fly to be heavily dependant on the fleets and people I fly with. As long as you can fight at the range the fleet needs and are tanked whatever the Logi can rep, don't really matter what you fly.
Just my experience though, might be different for you.
Btw, Amarr dessie, the Coercer, has one midslot. That means no point or no prop which is bad for beginners. PvP is hard enough to learn without needing to put up with clunky ships, just my opinion. Might be the same for Amarr frigs?
Saying it's fine to fly without a web/point/prop if you know how to fly is not good as this is a new player to PvP asking for advice, did you know how to keep range or alpha things in your first PvP fight?
Also I station trade on my alt dude, no need for a second account :) Unless you want one :D Sometimes I get bored -- http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoePpyYRpxJQ0jfS6xB-cTQ/videos |

Yeah I seem to be finding it hard to use a punisher solo. Cant imagine incursus will be alot easier, the blaster range will be a *****?!
Looks like its minimatar train time for now...

Fly what you want, not what is "best." EVE is a game, and you should do what you can to enjoy it. If you cant stand how ugly minnie ships are, you dont have to fly them!
I personally like gallente ships. I fly Incursus/Ares/Taranis at the moment and look forward to the Nemesis/Thorax/Brutix/Talos/Proteus/Megathron in the future. Here is my KB link. http://eve-kill.net/?a=pilot_detail&plt_id=1369710 As you can see I have no issue flying gallente and have a very positive record.
Fights are won with good pilots and smart FCs, not minmatar ships.
edit: You can't go wrong with Minmatar but by no means should you feel like they are the only option. |

Does seem the overiding opinion is that you have to go fly minmatar to be sucessful!
Think I'll go fly gallente a while, Amarr isn't working for me and not sure i feel like being another rifter yet!
Thanks again everyone! |

Minmatar is called winmatar for a reason. Though you'll find different kinds of pvp favors different races.
Short advice I have given new players.
Learn to fly a frigate and t1 fit it. Support skills to lvl 3. Learn to fly a cruiser and t1 fit it. Support skills to lvl 4. Learn to fly a battlecruiser and t1 fit it. Learn to fly a bc and t2 fit it. Learn to fly a t3. support skills to lvl 5.
Last step can be switched for bs if that is prefered where you happen to pew. |

With the T1 frigate update each race now has very viable combat frigates.
Minmatar - Rifter - Versitile, armour, shield, speed with the best GTFO capability.
Caldari - Merlin - Brawling powerhouse house now with big shields and hard hitting blasters. Range can still be an issue but a lot more noob friendly now.
Gallente - Incursus - Hard hitter with a hard tank + a drone for some nasty dps outputs. good speed but range can still be an issue.
Amarr - Punisher - pure brawler with excellent damage projection and a great tank. Has less tackle ability but this guys is a slugger. Amarr - Tormentor - More versitile brawler + drones and prop/scram/web ability.
All the frigs are viable now more than ever.
I would advise you to fly whatever you think will be your favoured combat 'style' i.e speedy, brawler etc and pick the ships/race with the bonus' to that style. |

For noob PvP, Minmatar. Not because of the ships so much as the racial weapon system, Autocannons especially are very easy to use and remove a lot of the either/or stress from building your frigates.
As for T2, just initially train it for whatever race you're trained in, switching to another race later is just a matter of grabbing racial frig V for a second race and unlocking T2 small guns, which is just a matter of a week or two. |
