(Careful can be a long read) Morning all, just a bit of a question and straight to the point;
If you log on straight after down time and find a WH, go into it, find a POS and Ships (not yours) where the ships are outside the POS shields and the POS guns are online but not set to shoot you. And you can fly the 2 battleships, 2 battlecruiser and 1 frigate and decide to take all 5 of them back to High sec.
Is that right or wrong ? IE is it ok to take and that was human error with the ships outside the POS or was there a bug that popped the ships out side and I was lucky to get there on the day the guns were off ?
Just a q n a
Thanks,
A -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

POS owners don't know POS mechanics.
Consider them gifts.

EVE is all about profiting off of other peoples stupidity. In this case, you succeeded at doing so. However, on another note, I now have one of those annoying sigs. |

It is within the game mechanics, so it is not wrong. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

If it floats in space, it's yours to take. (That doesn't just apply to ships but also to jetcans in mining belts...)

Thanks, thats the most valued answer :)
Overall the find was;
1 Thorax 1 Myrm 1 Hyperion 1 Huricane 1 Imicus
All with a good flavour of T2 mods, rigs and items. I did a break down of the cost of the combined ships but its not worth posting as some faction mods were overly expesnive and would make the figures look ridiculous IMHO but you get the idea.
As for the POS / Corp who did it, I hope they learnt from the experience.

Anything that you can take without directly misusing game mechanics is fair game. And human stupidity is not game mechanics so you're good to go.
Even if it was a bug that caused the ships to move out of the force field - that's not your problem. It's up to the POS owner to petition the loss to CCP and then maybe get a reimbursement (though that's not gonna happen since "their logs don't show anything" - not even if you have kill mails and other evidence so backup your claims so the owners don't stand a chance in this case I'd assume).
Nice find though. Have fun with your new ships.

I recently bought an Orca (fully fitted and rigged) for a steal. The guy who sold it too me found it floating around in a system with no pilot in it so he took it and contracted it off for an easy 420 mil.
You sound like you did quite well, grats you lucky sod.

You did them a favor, by teaching them that they made a mistake. And it would be unethical to let the ships go to waste... You definitely have the moral high ground here. - NEVER PVP SOBER. |

There is no such thing as theft in EVE, its 'permanently borrowed'

Edited by: Sanctus Maleficus on 08/10/2009 14:22:55 I would argue that it IS theft, which is fine in the games rules. The real question is, do you want to play the game that way?
Personally, I would probably help them out with what they did wrong. "Why?" you might ask? Just look at the other replies in this thread -- it is better to make friends, than enemies, in Eve. Most people default to your enemy, anyway.

That leads me to a question. If you log off and your ship isn't in a station, does it just "float" in space? I've only been playing for a few weeks, but just out of habit I never logout unless I'm in a station...

Yeah, help them out so that when you go back their PoS can shoot you and they loot your wreck. Congratz on the find. A friend of mine found a Hurricane with a cargohold full of Sleeper loot floating at a planet in a wormhole once. He took it out and sold it and the loot. He contacted the owner of the ship (based on the name of the ship) and found out that the guy had lost his prober and was stuck in the wormhole and decided to self destruct his pod to get out. Why he didn't self destruct the ship too, who knows....

There are different scenarios that will dictate what happens.
1. You are not aggressed by another player and log off in space. Your ship will automatically emergency warp 100K Km in a random direction. It will automatically "disappear" after ~30 seconds. 2. You ARE aggressed by another player and THEN log off in space. If you are warp scrammed your ship is stuck there and they have ~15 minutes to kill your ship. When your ship pops the pod will automatically emergency warp 100K Km in a random direction. If your ship is NOT warp scrammed when you log off then it will emergency warp and sit in space for ~15 minutes. If your aggressors have a prober you can expect to come back without a ship/pod.
There are "tricks" that some people employ involving logging off and on multiple times or logging on alternate characters... I won't go into details on those though. These tactics are against the "spirit" of the game mechanics in regards to player interaction but are there to protect players that suffer from sudden network connectivity loss. Since it's impossible for CCP to determine if a player lost connection intentionally by pulling the plug or if the connectivity loss was intentional they can't enforce any action against the "logoffski" techniques.

Explanation
Also notice that you will still be on board at that time. If someone find you they can destroy your ship, but not board it. _
I like to play this game because it make my in-game actions and archievments to mean something in-game. |
