This is still a drawing board idea but it worked on the the test server. I'm attempting to see just what kinds of speeds I can get out of a cruiser class ship using a BS mwd. Yes I do know a BS mwd is not meant for cruisers, but as my experiment shows they can fit one and remain cap stable. So far I can't get some pretty good speed for a speed tank, but the dps potential so far is rather low.
Not all of my relevant skills were at level 5 for this test but most of them were.
I used a Vigilant because I knew I was going to need the extra fitting potential of a faction cruiser.
Fitting as such,
Highs Small Artillery, with the fittings in the mids and lows I couldn't fit many medium guns so I went with small artillery to get better range and to save on cap. The BS mwd drains a lot of cap.
Mids best named tech 1 BS mwd. T2 cap rechargers
Lows Best T1 cap recharger aquivalents in all the lows, I can't remember what they are called at the moment. Rigs 3ccc 5 Medium drones
at an orbit of 40k I could hold a speed of 3500 at a closer range of about 20k I could orbit at 2900. Top speed of about 4500.
All of this was attempted without implants. I'm interested to see what this will do though with a set of Snakes.
If you have some other potential fitting suggestions that would be inline with this experiment or suggestions on some other cruisers to attempt this with I would love to hear what you have to say. Recruitment Thread EKT Website |

The horribly agility penalty means this is basically only useful for bumping capitals.

Ships like the Navy Cara and Fleet Stabber can almost pull it off, due to their insane agility, but it will always be a comedy killmail waiting to happen.
Fleet stabber can fit D180's with a 100MN, and still have room for gyros.

So what would be the lowest speed that you would need to have an effective Speed Tank. My orbit spee that I can maintain with this setup right now is about 3k. I think once I get another a skill or two up to level 5 and with implants I should be able to free up an extra low or two for some gyros. The other problem this setup faces is tracking. The turrets can't seem to hit anything at these speeds. I think I'm going to have to try and find a missle or a drone boat with enough mids and lows to experiment with. I think you forgot to factor in agility, the horrible acceleration and the massive capacitor usage.

Yup.
All the numbers the OP posted can easily be met or beat by a vaga.

It's an idea that has its merits in some situations...I've used it myself - fitting 100MN AB's to Drakes as heavy tackler in mission busting situations
You really have to be going in a single direction...you do lose a shed load of agility

A 10mn AB on a Harpy is always fun with that new AF boost...
