The battle at the end of At All Costs by David Weber (Alot of great moments throughout the Honor Harrington series((and yes its Honor, its her name god damnit.))
Pretty much all of John Ringos Legacy of the Aldenata and his Looking Glass series.
Necropolis by Dan Abnett from his Gaunts Ghost Series
Tank Lords by David Drake
Armor by John Steakly, very good book, probably one of my all time favorites, the end scene where the main character takes on the mercenaries in their enteirity and then boards their ship and finishes them off in space.
The Forever Hero by L. E.Modesitt Jr
And of course The Forever War by Joe Halderman.
Some of my favorites, not quite moments, but I can't bring myself to ruin the stories of these for those of you who haven't read them. And many many(beyond my ability to recall ;)) more books I enjoy that didn't jump directly to the forefront of my mind. |

BSG stuff:
The final five discovering, and then accepting their identities. Admiral Adama taking his ship back. President Roslin shouting into the comm, "I AM COMING FOR YOU". Starbuck playing All Along the Watchtower with her dad. Admiral Adama saying, "Jump the Ship Starbuck!" near the end of the show. The conversation between Lee and his father about giving up technology. Head Baltar and Head 6 appearing in present day New York and their conversation at the end of the show.
"You know it doesn't like that name".

Other than watching Empire Strikes Back with my dad in the cinema as a kid ("Wait, that's the end? But they didn't win!") it'd have to by my first ever successful battle against Thargoids in Elite. Those things killed me so many times until I figured out what I was doing and whupped their asses.
Galactica's atmospheric jump was also awesome, one of those moments you hope for when you're watching any sci fi. =================================================

my favorite moment right now is from bsg season 4 At the begining, when they discovered the earth and it was dead, the black gf of Lee Adama, going out with him then going back in her cabin, getting her gun and blowing her head. The hole idea of the lost faith the choice and the will strenght of the man just blow me up
There is a lot of favorite moments in bsg star wars babylon 5 ect though too.

That episode of BSG where they had to jump every 32(?) minutes. That basically made me watch the rest of the series. Shame how it turned out.
Bladerunner. Almost all of it. Not the voiceover version.

For me the greatest SF movie so far was Blade Runner.I like this kind of dark techy ambience. And of course Rutger Hauers monologue at the end was just...wow!
As for books, i was just blown away by Iain Banks "Use of Weapons". Needless to say i was very disappointed to see that "Zakalwe" as character name wasnt available anymore when i started playing EVE.

For it was a no brainer...The opening scene of Star wars, when the rebel ship is over taken by the Empire Star Destroyer and that ship just kept coming and coming getting bigger and bigger. Huge moment in my life, unforgetable :)

We do not know the size, nor the disposition, nor the strength of the enemy forces, but all indications point to a massive assault against Colonial defences'.
The BSG Miniseries, Season 1, Episodes regarding the Pegasus in season 2 and the escape from New Caprica in Season 3.
The latest Star Trek movie was also brilliant as were ST movies 2 (The Wrath of Khan) and 6 (The Undiscovered Country).
Star Wars was a big influence when i was younger although i can't say im a fan nowadays.
In terms of literature the Ian M Banks Culture novels are my favourite pieces of Sci Fi literature, followed by Gaunts Ghosts.
Oh, and of course Firefly/Serenity. The executives at Fox who cancelled that show did the genre a great injustice.

Open the pod bay doors, HAL. I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that. What's the problem? I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do. What are you talking about, HAL? This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it. I don't know what you're talking about, HAL. I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen. Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL? Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move. Alright, HAL. I'll go in through the emergency airlock. Without your space helmet, Dave, you're going to find that rather difficult. HAL, I won't argue with you anymore. Open the doors. Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.

One of my most memorable was Bruce Dern in "Silent Running" where he is saying goodby to his little robot:
"Realizing that his crime will be uncovered when the Berkshire finds him, Lowell jettisons the last dome to safety with the words "take good care of the forest, Dewey."
With the Berkshire only two hours away from docking, Lowell and the damaged Huey sit facing each other while he arms the last of the six nuclear charges. As he prepares to destroy himself and preserve the last dome, Lowell says to Huey: "When I was a kid, I put a note into a bottle, and it had my name and address on it. And then I threw the bottle into the ocean. And I never knew if anyone ever found it."
With that, Lowell destroys the Valley Forge with the last of the onboard nuclear charges.
The final scene is of a well-lit forest greenhouse drifting into space, tended by the sole remaining robot with a battered watering can."
Really fine Sci Fi is so hard to come by any more.

Oh man, I watched this movie dozens of times when it first came out. There's something about the way it has a decent plot, a fantastic backstory, amazing CG...
I can't believe that was ten years ago.
And it's such a shame two and three were so crappy in comparison.

Well, not entirely, I really liked the light sabre fight between Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul. That was one of the most fantastically choreographed scenes ever.

Sure, the choreography is great, and so is the CG, but it didn't save the movies from the really boring romance / pew pew plot.

Reid Malenfant bugging out after becoming a Gaijin or something, and constructing the GRB shield. I loved how Stephen Baxter described how the shield itself was more than dynamic, with it's own wars even, and how the idea that there was once a character named Reid Malenfant just ceased to exist as he became this odd machine.
Hell, I liked all of Manifold: Space.
Especially what I said before, and the empty darkness of the Triton colony.

Actually, as above, I'd have to admit that the light-sabre stuff in the new Star Wars movies was pretty damn good... but that's really about the only recommendation I can make about them. I lost interest in the franchise at around the time the Ewoks turned up.

And BTW, Star wars isn't Sci-Fi.
Some people disagree...it depends on how you define sci-fi. Star wars is more specifically "space opera", which is a subdivision of sci-fi, since sci fi is the bigger category. Star Wars is more concerned with the storyline than the tech, so it is definitely not "classic" sci-fi- also known as "hard" sci-fi, which was the very first kind of sci-fi. Certain elements of Star Wars, have, however, been turned into "hard" sci-fi by its fanboys, and into fantasy (the Jedi Church for example) by others. Things like this are very hard to classify, since fantasy elements can also be present in sci-fi books and vice versa- take Dragonriders of Pern, by Anne McCaffrey, for example. Most of the books are more accurately fantasy, even though the backstory is sci-fi (somewhere between hard and soft).
One could even argue that science fiction is not its own genre at all, but a sub-genre of fantasy. Books like to defy classification.
