You'll be amazed how quickly people get their friends in for a free carrier kill.

Apart from anything else come dominion there will be a couple of hundred titan pilots twidling their thumbs waiting for the oppurtunity to one shot a cap ship.

Originally by: Daedalus II Now I'm not stupid and know you should never take a carrier out without protection, but let's just imagine this scenario; A single carrier ratting or doing something else in a low sec system (away from a station). The system is not very densely populated, but it's not empty either.
I don't have much experience from low sec, but have been on a few roams with 10-15 newbs in frigates and cruisers. We've seen a few cynos, but we would NEVER have flown there as we know we would be killed.
When I see gatecamps in low sec they are usually pretty small (a few ships, mostly T2 frigates, cruisers). Sometimes you see a few battleships but that's not very often.
It seems to me that these numbers and ships couldn't under normal circumstances take on even a single carrier. They just lack the firepower and tanking power to inflict any sufficient damage.
Of course there are still risks: * roaming battleship gangs * a gang that has observed the carrier under longer time and built a specific fit to take it down * 0.0 people jumping in large capital fleets just to "have fun" * another carrier or two jumping into the same system
But as long as one keeps track on spiking local or unknown cynos it feels like a carrier is quite safe (within reason of course) in low sec. As long as the number of people are 10 or lower in the system, even if they all attacked at the same time they would probably not have the firepower needed.
So, is my assessment correct, or am I placing too much confidence in the power of carriers? They look powerful on paper, but is it true in game?
To be quite honest you shouldn't be looking to do regular npc activities with a carrier in lowsec unless you have a strong supporting fleet with appropriate ecm and get-out plans.
To put things into perspective - when Star Fraction use our carriers we generally have at least 4 carriers on standby (usually more) and they get used in combination with significant conventional assets. Even then we are very strict on when and where and for how long they are exposed in open space. ie ... they cyno drop, do their job, align for out and leave the field as quickly as possible.
I'm fairly certain that if you used a lone carrier for npcing anything else away from the station/pos for an extended period of time you'd be scouted and killed in a relatively short period of time.
Now you'd be at no risk from us (SF being NRDS of course) but if you were a red - and I noticed your carrier then what would happen is we'd get an out of corp cyno character to covert warp to your location and confirm your position in space. We'd then cyno in appropriate forces to kill your carrier within a few minutes and from the moment the cyno went up you'd have probably 2-3 seconds to react in time to cyno out before the disruptor went on (if that.)
Once the first tackle was made you'd never escape because our incoming carriers would tackle you as well and the ship would be lost.
I point this out because we are by no means the only alliance in lowsec with this capability and you will be seen as an easy target by anyone hoping for a quick carrier kill.
Carriers ARE excellent ships - but they need to be a part of a fleet not the whole of one.

From my observations Chribba seems to post in every thread with more than two pages. Can you imagine the work Chribba must be putting down on the forums!
Say that the 10 most visited forums have in average one new post per minute, and say on average one of every five posts reach two pages. This means that Chribba is posting every second minute, 24 hours a day! If there ever was anyone who suffered from the 5 minute delay it's Chribba! He must be constantly waiting on that timer (Maybe he has struck a deal with CCP to get rid of the timer?) How does Chribba even have time to play? He's on the forum CONSTANTLY.

Edited by: NiiKleagh on 13/10/2009 19:22:37 Sorry, OP, but your logic is FAILing on more than one level.
I swear I've killed at least 8 carriers from the scenario you came up with - and that doesn't count the scores of carriers and Dreads that actually came to fight me and my friends in other battles.
You simply do not understand game mechanics if you think that the Alts and small gate-camping groups flying around could not take your carrier down.
As we keep a carrier busy, there are multitudes of friends and allies that will happily jump 20 jumps to come help, as well as to just be on another carrier kill.
It's all the more fun if we never jump a capital into the mix.
If you can afford to lose a carrier, and still buy another, try it.

I was in a group that had a carrier "protecting" miners in low sec.
Turned out that the hulks were ignored and those miners had to jump into PvP ships to rescue the damn carrier.
Carriers are a liability.
I'm only half joking.

you will scaned down faster than u can recall your fighter's
youd need to keep your 360 scanner open and b aligned at all times risky but doable
a single carrier isnt hard to kill if a gang is proply preperd for it
gl ps wot system was this again ?

Originally by: Daedalus II It's a little tragic that 0.0 people are so bored and overpowered that they can throw away 10 dreads just to kill a single low sec carrier that proves no threat what so ever to them One would think they should use their time to something more constructive... I guess this will change somewhat in Dominion, but that's for another thread to speculate in.
