Let's say I want to try exploration alone, in high sec.
I use a Covert Ops to find sites, but it hasn't got the slots to do anything once I'm at those sites, certainly not combat-wise. So I'll need a ship that can do combat, and hacking, and archeology. Presumably it won't be able to do gas mining or asteroid mining too, but I have a Hulk I can use. Or maybe a Covetor if I'm scared of the Goons. And I can probably figure out a ship for gas mining too.
But what hull should I opt for, for the "visit found sites" part? Something that can fight any rats that might be there, and do hacking and archeology. Ideally mine a little gas too.
I can fly almost all Caldari ships, and have mad drone skillz, and am very willing to cross-train to Gallente, and eventually Guristas. I don't have good g++ns skills at all, but am I correct in assuming that drones can do most of the fighty work?

Then, Tengu or Proteus with Emergent Locus Analyzer Subsystem obviously. The subsystem gives the same scanning bonus as Covert Ops - and the rest is for combat stuff of your choice. It doesn't really matter which T3 cruiser you choose, for high sec exploration they are totally overpowered anyway. |

For High sec you will want to stick with Cruisers down. |

t3 strategic cruiser if you want an all-in-one ship. It's seriously t3 or go home. You will occasionally be contested in the good highsec sites and t3 cruisers will tear any other ship a new vagina in terms of completion speed. |

Those are pretty much the best ships to get the job done. T1 drone cruisers are my favorite for high sec, T2 for low sec, specially the Pilgrim.
T3 cruisers will best in any space, but also the most expensive.
I do exploration in high sec with my arbitrator and it's awesome, much more now with drone damage mods.
Ishtar will be my next ship for exploration in high and low sec. |

A Force Recon T2 Cruiser will work as a Poor Man's all in one high security exploration ship. You'll just have to fit up one scanning rig on it to give it a boost for probing, also a scanning implant will help a lot..
Force Recon Cruiser can use Covert Ops Cloak and has enough slots to fit up exploration modules as well as Offensive and Defensive modules. The higher level combat site in high security (Virgil) seemed to be a bit too much for it, even with pure combat mode fit up and ended up being more trouble than it's worth due to taking too long to complete..
I used a Force Recon Cruiser for quite a while and mainly went for small low level Cosmic Anomaly, Mag, Radar, 3/10 DED and mid level combat sites (Lookout, Watch) without needing refit to combat mode. For Expeditions I would refit to combat mode and with a Covert Ops Cloak, could complete the last stage in low sec systems.

Something to do with rewards vs risk and effort. Or in other words, do a few weeks of "silly" plexes and you can pimp fit half a dozen tengu's without any significant chance of losing a ship. |

Its called efficiency. They do it the fastest.
With that said, its dumb as hell that a T3 cruiser can do sites in high sec that Tech 1 battleships and battlecruisers cannot. |

you misunderstood me. you're not gonna pimp half a dozen tengus with silly profits that you get from hisec plexes. single magsite in nullsec can yeld 100mil. an 6/10 can give you pithum a-type invul worth ~1.6 bil. by silly i mean profits that are in hisec from doing plexes/radars/mags. |

The thing is, a lot of people are extremely risk averse. Thus they stick to high sec.
Additionally, high sec caldari space can yield pithum c-type medium shield booster, pithum c-type adaptive invuln as well as crystal implants and some decent faction mods/bpcs.
It is thus heavily competitive and often, sites come down to racing to the loot. With this in mind, a properly pimped tengu is the way to go. Max dps (faction BCS),sisters gear to aid in probing faster, enough tank not to worry, faction/deadspace afterburner/mwd and some damage/navigation implants go a long way to making you faster than the other guy. |

I just want to learn how to do the exploration sites first, before I try it in low-sec or wormholes.

People may be risk averse But ~1.6bil erases a lot of risk for a whole lot of players.
Things like this is what it takes to motivate players to fly into null.

I respect that, but you aren't going to learn much about how to run low/null/WH sites from high sec sites. Mags and radars don't exactly take much; you kill what you have to and orbit a can with a profession module running until it opens. Combats are specific to the security region; the only ones that overlap are 4/10 (high and low) and 6/10 (low and null). So there's really not all that much to learn from sticking to high. The exception is the basics of probing, but you'll be doing that while cloaked up anyhow so there's really no difference there.
Honestly, I'd say grab a Tengu, slap on a cloaky travel/probing fit, throw a combat fit in cargo and get yourself to low. Skip null and wormholes to start if you'd like as interdiction modules do throw a new wrinkle in things, but at least in low you'll learn to use dscan religiously etc. |

Each to their own. T3s are just about as safe as you get in low sec... but yeah, losing them kinda sucks. At least you won't forget the lesson anytime soon.
To be fair, I guess I started exploring in an Ishtar/covops combo. I learned a thing or two that way -- but one of the things I learned is that a truly nomadic setup is unambiguously better for the job. And that means a T3.
If you're not in it for the combat sites a force Recon is a pretty good bet though. Pilgrim is best for this though and unless things have changed lately Salpad has zero Amarr skills. An Arazu might manage to scare off the casual onlooker though... |

Just saying, if you are not used to lowsec, a less expensive ship is better for the first time. To use me as an example, my first lowsec experience ended in pirates honoring their ransom. It also taught me that scan probes are not checked in your overview by default... |

Quick advice:
Pick a Sovereignty and pick a ship with natural resists to the rats there. Beef resists with specific hardeners.
Exploration is all about speed, speed, speed. Highsec exploration is extremely competitive for the combat sites. Radar sites are your bread & butter. Mag sites are meh but you can pick up Intact Armor Plates woth 18m each (rare but it happens).
Combat plexes can be hugely profitable but be prepared for a long hard slog on occasion. This forum is *full* of whiney threads about explorers getting no decent drops for 'weeks on end'.
Combat plexes are about doing the absolute minimum necessary to get the fat loot. Kill triggers, move on, kill Overseer, loot & gogo. Or if your tank is not good enough, kill Overseer, bookmark wreck, warp out, warp back in 3 minutes (site will have despawned).
Here's a good fit for an Ishtar in Gallente (or Caldari) High/lowsec:
[Ishtar, Allround explo] Medium Armor Repairer II Shadow Serpentis Armor Kinetic Hardener Shadow Serpentis Armor Thermic Hardener Shadow Serpentis Armor Thermic Hardener Capacitor Power Relay II
Experimental 10MN MicroWarpdrive I 10MN Afterburner II Codebreaker I Analyzer I Eutectic Capacitor Charge Array
Prototype Cloaking Device I Drone Link Augmentor I Core Probe Launcher I, Sisters Core Scanner Probe I Salvager I [empty high slot]
Medium Sentry Damage Augmentor I Medium Sentry Damage Augmentor I
Garde II x5 Warden II x5 Hammerhead II x5 Hobgoblin II x5 Vespa EC-600 x5
(Quick nod to Hungry Eyes..)
If your skills aren't up to fitting this, drop a rig off for more CPU.
You can drop the DLA in the high for 3 electron blasters or somesuch. Also read Hungry's thread here.
If not T3, then drone boats are ideal for exploration since your dps comes from a bay and you can use free slots for utilities.
You *will* be competing against mostly T3 explorers dual-boxing. But be patient and you will get lucky. The box said "Requires Windows-á2000 or better", so I installed Linux. |
