I'm kinda maxed-out on drives. Plus there's no rational explanation for why on earth it needs to wipe the drive it's installed on, no other OS does.

You can't have two OSs on one partition. When a computer boots, it boots AN OS from A partition. You can have one hard drive with multiple partitions, each of which can have an OS. This is dual-booting (in the case of two) or multi-booting for more. Now your PC checks the first partition which reports back that there are multiple OSs available to choose from, and allows you to choose which to start.
"No other OS does". You are wrong. Almost all behave the same and I have offered a rational explanation for the why. You can dual boot it, you can multi boot it, you can install it clean on a new hard drive, you can backup your data and format your current XP install and install it clean...what you can't do which is what I think you seem to want, is having both running simultaneously, on the same screen at the same time on the same partition without the files overlapping. Maybe you could get a quantum computer that runs every OS and program ever written and those that haven't been, or open a gateway to a parallel dimension.
If you said something about DX9 performance, 16-bit compatibility or cost, I could understand complaining about upgrading. Instead you whine about...what? That you have to do a clean install? If it's such a big deal, get a copy of vista (don't worry about activating), upgrade XP -> Vista and upgrade Vista to Win 7. You're data and programs will be intact, you don't need different HDDs or partitions and then you can complain that Win7 is like 10 gigs and XP was like only 1 gig! OMG! Welcome to 2001. You can, so here's a link. Enjoy. -------------

Been using it since august and while not flawless it certainly is a combination of everything that was awesome about xp and everything that was not ****ty about vista.

Using Win7 x64 here. So far seems to be pretty good one, though I had my suspicions. Windows Explorer seems to be crappier, would be nice to get XP one back, but I guess I'll get used to it.
I had pretty annoying mouse freezes (cursor freezing for 1sec every 10-20sec), after googling found out others had same probs (with vista also?). Dunno why, but USB mouses seem to have that freezing problem. Swapped to old PS/2 mouse, and it all worked fine again. (I think USB-PS/2 adapter also works).
Anyway, it's good that we seem to have got a decent OS version again.

With some USB they work better when you plug them directly into the motherboard, rather than through a port.
