Something that I noticed recently when playing with my graphic settings (putting them to full) Is the fact the option for having vapour trails behind your ship is no longer available.
So I have just 3 questions about this:
1.When did it disappear 2.Why did it disappear 3.Will it be coming back
Sorry if this has all ready been done ages ago and died, I just couldnĘt find anything on it and have been away for a while.
p.s. sorry if this is in the wrong place

I'd like to know this also.
I don't remember there being tails, nor could I find anything on youtube of what they looked like. I heard they caused lag, but I'm sure that's just low end computers.

If you watch some of the older trailers there are some in them I think one or two may even be in the Trinity trailer.
They were there in the past as I remember trying to make the longest trail possible by going really fast. Lag is probably the reason though I would like to know. I miss the trails slightly.

Basicly they have said they will be coming back, but haven't given any time estimate on it, not even a soonÖ. So it might take a while, or it might be the next patch... _

Originally by: CCP t0rfifrans Acknowledged, we miss them too. We had to take out the old ones, as they were performance hogs, didn't jive with our new and improved rendering code and sometimes looked silly. We will certainly put in new ones, can't promise you when. It's on the list of things to do for the graphics programmers, but there's actually quite a lot of stuff on that list. If you are a graphics programmer and want this fixed, simply apply for a position at CCP, we are looking for graphics programmers amongst other things...

I think the performance hog part of it is that if you want to display an engine trail you have to know the previous positions of the ship (to draw the trail). So the server has to send say 20 positions (the current pos + 19 trail positions) for each ship to each client instead of 1 position (the current pos) for each ship to each client.
While this doesn't seem like very much, imagine Jita or a large fleet battle of 500 ships that essentially becomes 10000 ship positions for the server to distribute
Of course this can be done on the client side instead, but from my observations from when it was still there it was done server side.

It would be crazy to do it server-side. Either way... as long as there's the option to turn it on and off, I'm happy either way. I was quite happy when they disappeared.

I'm pretty much trails are done on the clients only.

Edited by: RedClaws on 03/11/2009 10:08:08 haha yah that'd be a bit stupid.
Hacking the client to display ginormous engine trails doesn't really give you a tactical advantage so I doubt it'll be server sided.
On the other hand, trails were starting to get buggier since ships continued to go faster. At the end they really looked crap if a fast ship was orbitting something at close range with a lot of agility.

I have no idea how it's done technically, but I don't think it's necessarily a performance hog. Computers in 1999 could do it fine with like 100 ships in Homeworld.

Like you say at the end of your post. This could easily be handled client-side! Gief vapour trails! However, you might want to consider a few things, first of all; I now have one of those annoying sigs. second; you should probably move on to some more interesting things than reading this sig.

This - it's actually fun that the maximum velocity is capped. In theory you should just have an acceleration limit of lightspeed, it just may take a long time to get there.
Space tactics would change in fun ways if ships didn't drive like cars (for example deceleration took just as much force/time as acceleration).
3 hours later, that raven is only at 1,000 k/sec. And unless it engages warp drive, it's going to take 3 hours to stop

Assuming new techinques are developed to bring them back without the bad lag effects, I'd like to see them look like what the thread title suggests... vapor trails. Trails that actually look like hot engine gasses dissapaiting into space (except for Minmatar, theirs should be belching smoke and sparks like something out of an old Flash Gordon episode).
