Hello
I'm on about the third day of my trial, still trying to wrap my head around everything. I've gotten through the initial 5 Agents and their tutorial mission series, and I've been mining Veldspar as I train a few skills since then; hoping to perhaps earn some extra scratch as I prepare to head out to the SOE epic arc.
I have around 50k Concentrated Veld right now; I don't suspect that's a whole lot, as I've only been mining for a little while in my dinky little Burst, but I suppose it must be worth at least some change. Just not sure what exactly to do with it. As I understand it different places have different going rates for different ores? How do I figure out where I can make the best profit on what I have without potentially getting myself jacked in the process? Is it better to sell the ore or refine it and sell the Tritanium? Or should I just sit on it and keep building up my stock to sell in larger bulk?
Sorry if this is all really noobish--I'm used to server-wide auction houses and the like, but there seems to be much more to consider when trying to turn a profit here. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you might be able to offer. |

Veldspar spawns in every belt in every region of space, so I don't think you have to worry about where to sell it; prices are going to be pretty much same all around. |

As Peta said, demand for Tritanium (which is refined from Veldspar) is pretty high all over. Check your market for the highest local value and sell there.
If you can't refine with 0% loss, you might try asking around for assistance. I'm sure most miners would be happy to help a small operation such as your own. Otherwise, you have to weigh up the value of selling the Veldspar in multiple hauling trips, versus refining down to Tritanium and selling that in one trip.

As for how much is 50k veldspar ?
Well one abaddon takes roughly 8mil units of tritanium and since you need 333 veld for 1000units of trit which makes it some 2,6 million units of veldspar to make a single battleship. |

Another point you might want to look at:
Selling ore vs selling minerals
Look how much the ore cost / unit on the market. Then multiply with the amount of ores you have and you have the price you would get from selling raw ore.
Then, open the refining window. Look how much minerals you get out of refining (the You get colomn) and multiply those numbers with the price of each mineral.
This way you can find out if it is more profitable to sell raw ores vs refined minerals (this is specially the case when you don't have high refining skills and high standings - to negate the "unrecoverable" and "we take" colomns). Inject your skillbook before you leave the station. Neo didnGÇÖt learn Kung-Fu by having it sit in his usb drive.-á If it moves, shoot it. If it doesn't move, poke it with your gun and then shoot it. The calculator, your industrial (if you have subbed) and the market window are your friends.
You have to figure out ore vs refine costs and go from there. It takes a few bits of maths to do but you will maximize your profit if you are mining for isk.
Look at what it is selling for or what the buy orders are. Lots of people will place low ball buy orders in rookie systems to get them to sell the ore at dirt cheap rates from ignorance. |

You can mine Veldspar in any system with any security level. Generally speaking, the lower the security of a system, the more valuable the ores will be there. You can find Omber in a 0.5 system in Minmatar space, which is more valuable than Veldspar. However, the belt rats (non-player pirate ships) in the lower security systems are also tougher.
You can refine Veldspar it into tritanium, but unless you get your refinery skills up high AND have high standings with the station owner, you will probably make more money selling the ore rather than the minerals.
Train up to get Miner II s. They get a much better yield than Miner i s.
As a newer miner, I would highly recommend going to the 'social' menu from the 'E" at the upper left hand corner of your EVE client, and look for 'Fleets'. Open that up, and look for mining fleets, especially ones with Orca support. Join a mining fleet, and you will have experienced and friendly miners to talk to as you mine. You don't need to join a corporation to be a member of a fleet.
Mining by yourself is like watching paint dry. Mining with a bunch of friends is a social activity, like a backyard barbecue.
The Orca also gives mining boosts, increasing the amount you mine. You can also dump your ore from your cargo hold right into the hold of the Orca, eliminating the need for using a jet can or a Giant secured container. The orca has drones to kill the belt rats, it has remote reppers to heal you, it even has a docking bay so you can switch ships or modules if you like.
A lot of Orca pilots will buy your ore from you right on the spot. You just keep mining, and watching your wallet flashing. This eliminates the need for mining the ore, dumping it in a flippable jet can or small capacity GSC, docking your ship, getting your industrial ship to pick up your ore, taking it to the station, etc.
Also, consider training up to get a mining cruiser. I find that the Caldari Osprey is simply the best mining cruiser, hands down. The minmatar mining cruiser can't compare with it, since it lacks the drone space. Drone skills are extremely important to a miner, since your drones protect you as you mine.
The good thing about mining in a cruiser (or battleship) is that you can use these ships to run missions as well.
If you decide you want to be a professional miner, you can just skip the cruiser and get a retriever (mining barge). |

This should answer majority of your questions in the future
It's a link to the mining guide of EVE, I've used it myself, learned quite a bit from it
Good thing you started now. Veldspar back then went for only 4 ISK a piece. Since Hulkkagadon, Veldspar spiked to 6. Sometimes people will buy it at 7, which as AMAZING for something so common.
As people suggested, just keep the ore in ore state. I suggest getting Refining V, Refining Efficiency III and (Ore name) Processing III. This will give you 103.1% Refine rate (if my math isn't sucking right now), and knowing the station you refine at, they take 5%, leaving you with 98.1% of minerals all to yourself. Heck, if you get (Ore name here) Processing IV, you'll get 103.1% for yourself, that's more than what it should give. If math has not failed me, that's about 2 weeks, perhaps a little less (assuming you just buy one month sub).

Drones are another thing I need to figure out. Thanks for all the useful info. And yeah, being able to shoot the breeze with others makes mining a bit more bearable lol. |

If you mean the very first Sisters epic arc, with Sister Alitura, you don't need anything crazy to do it. It's meant as a tutorial to the other arcs and is pretty easy with just basic skills.

Except the last bit, if he's been focused on training mining he's probably going to need to call in a buddy to get through Dagan's shield, and possibly to tank Kritsan depending how invested he is into defense. |

If you plan to get Mining drones, the guide will explain that. But I'll give you a summary:
If you plan to have drones around all the time, you just need the following:
Drones V - Able to use 5 drones at once Mining Drone Operation V - 25% bonus yield for drones Drone Interfacing V - 100% bonus yield for drones
Stay away from Harvester Mining Drones. Way too expensive for what they do.
They make approximately 1/10th of what you mine on your own. It's basically a 1.1x multiplier for your work.
They do make a difference though, so don't be discouraged from them just yet.
I find it hard to mine on my own a lot too. All my buddies in real life don't really go on as often as I do. Make some friends in high sec, with the other carebears. |
