Done well it will make you rich. However, it will not make you popular. I doubt anyone will go as far as to shoot at you unless you try that in low sec Bene Gesserit is recruiting. |

There's a chat channel in game called THE NINJA ALLIANCE. Join it (through the channels + mailing lists interface, press "join" then type the channel name). You can get all the tips you want in there, and find fellow ninjas to partner with. The ISK is decent, a few million an hour. Not bad when you're brand new.

Considering that you killed the fellow, I doubt they'll be eager to do business with you, but they (the npc faction) live in Curse / Fountain.

It's definitely a great way for newer players to make ISK. If done properly, it's a great way for older players to make ISK as well. If you are decent at scanning and look specifically for angel/sansha/blood wrecks, you can make enough for the learning books really quickly.
People will shoot at you. Just yesterday, a Cerberus shot at me. But unless you loot, he'll end up like this guy
((Note, I actually DID loot in that circumstance, but the 15 min timer ran out before he shot me))
As for hating you..Yeah. Some people wrongly think that the salvage belongs to them. That's half the fun, though.

You can run missions for any of the pirate factions if you can survive in their space. That is NPC controlled 0.0 so it's pretty tough to do. You'll want to join a player corporation or alliance that inhabits the space and can keep it relatively safe; you'll also have to deal with the logistics of being far from any safe markets.
Most people who do this, do it with a 2nd character created many months or years after they've gotten pretty familiar with how to survive in 0.0 space. Still, you've got nothign to lose at this point so go ahead and fly out to the Curse region and see if you can hack it.

Mind you, Xelena, ninja salvaging is an easy way to get your ship blown up. There are many that will not stand for it, and will have an alt ready nearby for ninjas. You might soon find it no longer profitable. But I guess you can have your fun while you can, before wrecks are fixed to flag you if you salvage them and they aren't your own.

A ship set up for ninja salvaging can be recovered by selling a single armor plate(which is currently selling for around 250k ISK). If you lose your ship every time you enter someones mission, yeah it will lose its profitability, but the likelyhood of that happening is very remote. If you lose a ship in one out of 5 missions found (which is still fairly unlikely) you will more than compensate for any losses. --------------------------------------------

OP, this is an example of the type of people you will run across when ninjasalvaging. He's convinced that ninjasalvaging is being "Fixed", despite the following quote from CCP Incognito not even one day ago:
Quote: Had a chat with some designers this evening.
Ninja salvaging is intended game play. It was always intended that the wrecks are public, the loot is private.
They do not see it as a problem if others salvage your wrecks.
There are multiple ways to setup a ninjasalvaging ship. You can setup for cheapness and fly ships under 500K...in which case the potential ganker loses FAR more than you (and loses sec status)...assuming he's even successful.
Or you can put some expensive stuff on it, fly a t2/faction salvage ship, etc...in which case it's very difficult to suicide gank when piloted properly.
For the above reasons, I've never seen or heard of someone successfully suicide ganking a ninja. The closest I've seen is missionrunners who think they have aggro (who don't) getting CONCORDed.
Really ,though...as someone who has talked to legions of ninjasalvagers (many of them new players), I've not once heard "It just wasn't profitable because I kept getting suicide ganked".

OP don't listen to this guy.
Yeah you might lose some ships... but 1 looting run can pay for months worth of ships. And dont worry about what he says about wrecks flagging you. It's not going to happen. And if it did there wouldn't be very many mission runners shooting at you anyhow. Most Mission Runners are afraid to shoot at Ninjas that do loot to get flagged. They know its a good way to get ganked from Ninja back up.
Fly Cheap and fly safe.

OK - That was an Non-Player Character (NPC) that said that - NOT - a human player. It is a canned statement that is just part of the window dressing for the mission, just like the "OK Boys, Here's some meat. Get your guns and get to business." It was not a real invitation, just like the outraged reaction of your agent wasn't real when you "told" him about it. You didn't tell him about it - that was in the mission fluff. You'll get this mission every now and then and all the NPC's will say exactly the same thing they said the first time - every time.
Now - that said - the different NPC Pirate Corporations do have bases and agents just like the other NPC Corporations and Agents as I believe someone else has mentioned.
As to Ninja Salvaging - your biggest problem there is getting your scanning skills trained up and then your experience in using them. That chat channel Joe mentioned should give you all the help you need.
Some people really resent the Ninja Salvagers and some others don't care since they weren't going to loot or salvage their wrecks anyway. If they're running the mission to increase their standings they don't want to take the time away from running another mission to loot or salvage. If you want to be polite (which you don't have to do) you can ask if the mission runner minds if you salvage their wrecks.
Now - there is a misconception on the part of some Ninja Salvagers that the wrecks do not belong to anyone. This is incorrect. The wreck does belong to the person who created it. You can tell that it is YOUR wreck or that of someone in your fleet or Corporation - by the fact that it is white - and - you can tractor that wreck. If the wreck does not belong to you, someone in your fleet or your corporation (or someone who has set you blue) - then the wreck will be Yellow and you cannot tractor it. So - there is a fact of ownership of the wreck. It is not simply debris floating in space - and there are places on this web site that have referred to the wrecks as belonging to the person who blew them up. That however in no way keeps you from Salvaging them. You just can't pull the wreck to you with a Tractor the way you could one that was YOURS.
This is intended game play though and there is no reference I've ever heard of to changing this.
It's like stealing someone elses loot. You are allowed to do that without being penalized by Concord in any way - it's just that in this case the owner of the loot IS allowed to shoot at you without being attacked by Concord - and that - allows you to shoot back at him. One of the most common pirate tactics is to steal someone elses loot - for the express purpose of getting them to shoot at you - so that you can blow them up. Most pirates who do this do not actually want what they have stolen - they want you to shoot at them so they can blow you up.
So - wrecks and loot both belong to the person who created the wreck but the rules regarding them are different.
Again:
White wrecks belong to you or your friends - you can tractor them and salvage them. Yellow wrecks do not belong to you or your friends - you can NOT tractor them but you can Salvage them without penalty and without being flagged to the person they belong to.
White loot (the little triangle inside the wreck) belongs to you. If someone else takes it - they are flagged for 15 minutes during which time you can shoot at them if you want to.
Yellow loot does not belong to you. If you take it, the owner can shoot at you.

This is a great way for a new player to both have fun and make isk. As for other people complaining, once you get your first taste of tears you will never go look back.
Other people have mentioned looting. I would highly suggest it! Most L4 mission runners have spent billions on their ship, and if they fire on your little frigate and you get away, it means you can come back in anything you want and blow them the hell up!
For this reason alone, most are too chicken to fire on you. If one does fire on you, you can usually survive. Their ships are meant to do damage big ships, and if you have a nice, fast, tiny little frig they often can't kill you in one shot and you can get away. Exciting!
Oh, and if they do shoot you and you get away, you can come back and kill them! You won't have the skills to do this in the beginning, but it won't take too long till you can stand a chance :)

thank you for clearing p that stuff, i thought that it was an npc, but i wasn't sure. but i don't understand about who owns a wreck. if i understand what people and the other thread are saying i can not take the stuff in the wreck, because that gives the owner permission to shoot me because i stole from them. but if i salvage then they don't get permission to shoot me, (because i didnt steal from them?) im kind of confused, is this an unwritten law thing, or are there actual game rules saying that the wreck belongs to someone, and if there are, why am i allowed to salvage it but not loot it? are they different types of theft?

think of it this way. The stuff all belongs to the NPC pirates. CONCORD, however, doesn't give two ****s about their well-being, so they determined that the guy who kills them can have access to the module loot as a reward...but they don't care about the actual bits of the wreck itself.
You can salvage at will, because it is NOT considered theft. Anyone who shoots at you will be CONCORDOKKENed hilariously. I wont get into a gigantic argument here about whether the wreck itself is owned, because it's irrelevant.
