I want to get into 0sec mining and would like to be able to do it solo.
Is this even possible?
I was thinking of fitting a fast cruiser to try and make my enemies locking time slow. Would that give me enough time to warp away from trouble before being warp scrambled?
Any advice on ships / set ups for that? Or better strategies? Any help is appreciated |

Mining solo in a wormhole, maybe. Can't see you doing it realistically in nullsec though. |

Okay, so you want to mine solo in nul (0.0)...
Firstly i'd recommend reading the mining guide that gets linked quite a lot (it's rather good), but i don't have a copy of said link - sorry.
If you really want to proceed then you'll need a ship that can tank 2 BS (Battleships) and 4 cruisers and also mine. The NPCs in 0.0 are somewhat more dangerous than in highsec.
Now you'll actually want to make it worth something. Getting a cargohold of Arknor is very nice, unless it's about 15 units max. Then you'll want to refine it and then you'll want to sell it.
You can mine in a cruiser without an issue. Your cargo hold will be kind of small and you won't pull out much ore with the 3-4 mining lasers. You need pretty good skills to tank it though. So this is quite possible, but need a lot of running back and fore.
Unless you want to put up a PoS, then you need access to a station to refine in. Unless you want to sell to the locals you'll need to be able to get the minerals back to a trade hub. 0.0 is not as good for sales as highsec.
In short and by the time you've actually set everything up - you'll have made more money by mining Veldspar in highsec.
But dodging "pirates" in nul is pretty easy - as soon as someone enters local, you hide. |

Thanks for the tips.
How often will NPC pirates show up in nullsec? Is using a fast ship (to run away from them before they can lock) a usable alternative to tanking?

hmm sounds like your character has some skills to train up yet. be patient and get into a hulk and yes you can tank 0.0 npc's BS's / anything else with a hulk, despite what any tells you.
and 0.0 mining is very viable.

You could do it in wormhole solo but if you have any decent skills, you'll go through the ore that spawns there quickly. Well the ore that makes good money vs. the risk. The rats only spawn once in each belt and after they are dead it's just worrying about other players coming in to gank you. Biggest issue there is finding a wormhole that is empty (not likely) and that would likely stay that way if they find out you are a solo miner.
0.0 space isn't a place to just solo mine. You'll get ganked in no time, even if in a NRDS area like Providence was at one time (is it still this way?), and you have to deal with bs rats...so you need a tank or have some system set up like 2 hulks and one with shield rep drones. Plus you need a way to refine or store minerals to move out, which a pos will work fine for if you have rights to anchor it there....then a cap fleet could easily destroy for giggles.
So is it possible? Yes...but I bet for the effort you put into it, you could just mine veld in a quiet empire system for the same profit. |

Possible? Yes, very possible. Reasonable or profitable? Not at all.
There's a reason you don't see many people trying to ninja-mine in 0.0, it's just not worth it. Yeah, you could do it, but unless you're just doing it for kicks, you're better off just mining in highsec and making more ISK. |

Recently did a trip into null/low to try it out with a Covetor, with an alt on a cloak/cargo Itheron 5. The tanks not hard, can search for loadouts for that. Dodging the other players is pretty annoying since it's hard to tell which are the ones just there to kill the rats and which are there to kill you, or both. Biggest problem I had is after a few hours of mining I had plenty of high value ore, but it was a pain to get it back out. Ended up using an Orca with a speed/freight load out and a spotter. Solo? Anything's possible, and I know it can be done as I could have done it without the Itty or Orca, but not sure the profit would really be worth it, and I'd follow the golden rule of EVE: Don't go into null/lowsec with anything you can't afford to replace.
Edit: I didn't bother doing it again, the profit/risk wasn't worth it for me personally. |

I ninja mined with my corp years ago and we had a carrier to haul (before Rorq's and Orca's), we did it once and never did it again, as we could make more isk just doing highsec in a 0.5 in the time it took to organise everyone, get everyone to 0.0, mine and then get out again.
Solo? Yes but you would probably end up losing more than you make...just join a renter alliance or an indy corp that is based in 0.0 and do it to your hearts content. |

I am going to assume you want to mine in Null for the thrill of it. Practically for isk, you'll need to follow the advice in the above posts. :)
Is a cruiser small and fast enough to avoid being scrambled? No, because in null you can expect interceptors (and dramiels) both of which have fast lock times. Dramiels in particular, I believe, are good at offing cruiser sized vessels.
Against other cruisers its touch and go.
A t3 can avoid the obvious problem of bubbles.
In Summary: A cruiser in null for mining would be suicide. I recommend fitting for pvp and mining hulls rather. :)
----edit----- and to answer OP I'll reiterate whats already been said;
If you absolutely must mine solo you'll need to do in a WH, this can be viable, but you'll need alts for support roles (this depends on your setup, your time, isk, etc).
If you absolutely must mine in null, then you'll need to join some or other industry corp. They are out there and most are willing to accept new members (if your API key checks out). Also, don't be afraid, most of them don't bite. |
