OK, I've got the same problem many people have had, where I did missions for Gallente too long, and was at the point where Caldari would shoot me on sight. I finally raised Diplomacy to level 5, but I've still got an effective standing of -4.39 with Caldari and -2.69 with Amarr. On the bright side I can now travel through Caldari space again, but is there any way I can get back to positive standings with either?

You might be able to do missions for Khanid or Ammatar.

It's going to take quite a while to get back to positive standings with either faction, so make sure it's something you really want to do.

Two things.
1) Make sure you have Social trained to V so you will get all the faction standing out of each mission you can as well as Negotiations to V so you'll get everything else you can out of your missions.
2) You can get a buddy or an alt account to run missions with. They take out the mission and split it with you. Running them (and you) through the school missions will kick things off to a good start if you need to create a new alt character to do this. Also, Sister of EVE missions supposedly help across the board ... but I've not done them so I can't say for sure.

Storyline missions are the only ones that give empire standing - and can not be shared. ----------------

Check the derived standings chart to see who would be best to work for to raise your standings.
Also bear in mind that in order to run missions for them you don't actually need positive standings, just ones above -2. Once you get above that you can, as Tosh rightly says, run missions with someone with better standings to get access to a good corp within Caldari or Amarr.

Is the 16-mission "counter" shared? So Main + Alt run 16 missions with Main getting the missions and turning them in and sharing. After 16, Main is offered a storyline, which can not be shared with Alt. Am I correct so far?
Does Alt get offered a storyline mission as well since he just did get half-credit on 16 missions? Or must the pair run another 16 missions, which are acquired and turned in by Alt, for Alt to be offered a storyline.

Storyline offers aren't shared, either. To get a storyline, you have to run 16 missions from one of "your" agents. Sharing doesn't cut it. ----------------
