I am about to launch a POS in 0.5. I read the Eve-Guides for beginners and it was slightly vague on this issue. If I have 12 guns (6 medium artys and 6 small artys) and Warp Disrupt, Neut, Stasis, etc..., where is the best place to place them? Someone also told me to warp to 0 to the moon, then go straight up about 50m, anchor the CT there and then put the guns under it so that any would be attackers will fly right str8 in to the bank of guns. That don't seem right to me. I have 12 guns Shouldn't they be placed all around the bubble? Some on top, some on bottom, and some on either end? Sure could use some advice Thanks

Edited by: Joe Starbreaker on 11/11/2009 00:58:51 You can't do what your friend suggested, because the control tower snaps to the center of the grid by default, no matter where you are when you anchor it. However, depending on where it anchors, you could try to put some guns close to the warp-in point if you want that effect.
There are some complex and scary-looking layouts, but really you only need guns in two places. North pole and south pole works fine. The reason for this positioning is that if the enemy gets real close to one cluster, the other cluster will still be able to shoot them. If you had only one cluster of stuff, then the enemy could get real close and use angular velocity to tank your guns.

North pole and South pole, meaning very top and very bottom, right?
And does it matter where you place the other defenses?
Thank you very much

You want them next to the guns so that a player can operate both the guns and the other stuff at the same time.
The exception is hardeners, which can go anywhere in the bubble.
As for position, most people place them at the very top & bottom (N & S pole) as well as 4 equidistant places around the equator. However, that's normally something resembling a deathstar that has lots and lots of guns. N & S pole should do fine for your setup.

And since the guns et-all use their range from the tower it doesn't matter where you anchor them, they all have the same range-to-target. (Basically, if the enemy is 80KM from the tower and you have guns on the near and far side of the shield, all the guns will have an 80km range-to-target. Yet the enemy would see the guns at varying distances) The real advantage of sticking stuff all over the place is that if one set of guns is in optimal range then the other set isn't, so it involves a lot of moving around if someone wants to shoot them.

This is especially true if you have a large tower with stasis web batteries. The force field gets bigger as the tower gets bigger, so batteries on a large tower are usually about 45 km away from the tower itself. If you mount batteries so some are opposite the others, it adds an extra 90 km or so to the range to the far batteries. It takes time to move that far, and even more time when your speed is drastically reduced. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

I have top (1 group), top ring (6 groups), middle ring (6 groups), bottom ring (6 groups), bottom (1 group).
Distances are measured from the tower, not the battery, so where you place them really doesn't matter. The goal though is to not put everything in one big pile, so that a fleet can't just come in and smartbomb it all.
Also spread out the batteries based on their type.
So for example, if using 4 online ECM and 4 offline ECM (backups), don't put all the White Noise Generators in the same group. This way it is less likely you'll lose them all at the same time.

And if your an artist, you can spell out naughty words with your guns Anchor tons of guns if you want to create a lag bomb. Anchored guns that are not online do not eat fuel. http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1213058 Hi-sec R&D corp boosting is open for business! |

I had no idea! What about tracking, angular velocity? Surely there's a benefit to making sure the enemy is always a long distance away from at least one of your guns, so that he can't angular-tank it. Or is angular velocity also relative to the tower?

I've never seen the results of tracking tests published, just distance and ammo tests.
