How the hell does one convince Spotlight to look in all directories on the HDD?
I can't for the life of me to get Spotlight to find the Eve cache files. It seems to be fixated with only the places it thinks I should be searching in. :(

Have you checked that it aint added to the exclude list? I know there is a way to redo the spotlight index, but I think it can only be done through Terminal or a 3rd party app This one for example http://creativebe.com/mainmenu/ And by the way, they should really separate sigs from the main post. |

Yep, Spotlight did it's rebuild after I had fiddled with it's prefs. Took 20 minutes or so. There is no visible entries in the exclude list.
Have you tried searching for a known file in the Eve logs or caches? Eg: Every log file ends with a txt suffix so searching for "txt" should find hundreds of Eve logs.

Okay, I've found something out. It's truly weird. Given that I've already found the Eve files through some tedious clicking through endless directories, I started by opening a new Finder window in the Eve "p_drive" directory and Spotlight worked fine from there. A ton of log files found.
I then progressed further back up the directory structure opening new search windows and still finding the files no problem ... Until I got back to my home directory, bam, nothing found. :(
So, Spotlight doesn't like to show you what's inside system directories that are even located in your own home directory.
I haven't found any settings, neither in the folder info nor in Spotlight's prefs, for changing this rather broken behavior.

Sorry, cannot help you there, I have never used spotlight that much. And by the way, they should really separate sigs from the main post. |

Edited by: Jainia Soltella on 12/11/2009 18:12:13 For performance reasons, Spotlight doesn't search your ~/Library folder by default.
Haven't found a way to do it from the menubar spotlight box, but you can do it with a normal finder window:
1) Open a Finder window 2) Type in your search term in the search box. 3) Make sure that "This Mac" is selected 4) Click the + icon on the right hand side 5) Where is says "Kind" Click, and select "Other" from the menu that appears 6) A sheet will pop down with dozens of possible search fields. Find "System Files" and choose it. Optionally, check the "In Menu" box so you don't have to come to this window again 7) Make sure that "Include", or "are included" is set in the drop-down next to "System Files" Why this isn't by default when you select it, I can't say... 8) Click "OK" and you should see items in your ~/Library folder, including the Eve Cache stuff.
Edited for clarity and Leopard/Snow Leopard terminology differences.

Thankyou very much. I had skimmed over that menu thinking it was just for display order.
I've also found two more entries of interest: "Filename" and "Raw Query".
