Not sure when walking in stations is enabled but how are they gonna solve the problem with systems that are full of people ? walking in a station in Jita can get interesting... or is it instanced ? ------ Here's a phone. Call somebody who cares -Montgomery Burns |

That itself isn't a problem. Its something that may cause a problem, be it lag or something else, but strictly speaking the line you quoted explains no "Problem" _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

aaaa the good old earth and beyond times!
Is station walking coming into eve?
What I think Nemiona is getting at is,
1 station + 500 People (third person view) = LAG

CCP stated a long time ago the Walking on Stations was going to be on different servers. And @ one time they were talking very little interaction between the 2.
Ie if you are docked in station then you remain in local and connected to EVE. If you leave the ship to walk around you disappear from local and shift to the other server and you can't see who or what is going on in local.
That may have changed by now but that was what was said awhile back.

Earth and Beyond's walking in stations was pointless. They set up bars and meeting places that no one went to. I really wanted that game to work too.

500 users, x,y,z coordinates, direction facing, characterID (so it can know who to render client side). Sounds alot less intensive on the network traffic and CPU than tracking 8 turrets with different graphical effects on 200 ships. The third person view is all rendered on the individual client machines. It just needs to know what they look like, where they are standing, if they're moving, and which direction.
If you want to worry about something, worry about if there are collisions while walking and if you'll ever be able to get out of the Jita bar with an exotic dancer like in the demo. It'll be like trying to walk through a standing room only concert crowd.

What I always wonder about is "Why leave your ship?" as all I can see is the following downsides;
- You have added more time to walk back to your ship. And in cases of emergency or importance where you really need to launch ASAp. Well you have just blown those chances down the drain.
- Why do people pay to /dance all the time. Looks like a waste of time where you could be out mining so that gankers can get your fool asss
A plus note can be;
- Walking in stations has a casino where you can bet on two hot n sexy Minmat slave girls wrestling in a vat of butter with CCP staff trying to work out who will win. I will watch that and bet on it out side my ship.
Other than that, I do most things just fine without leaving my pod.
Cheers

There was a time when CCP said that WIS will never be needed to do any activity in the game. Of course this automatically made WIS pointless. It seems they have changed that stance now. So there may be numerous things you could include. The only thing they have mentioned so far is 'secret meetings' and 'being away from notice in EVE' but I do not know why that would ever be useful at all.
There is easy ways for players to chat incognito now (vent channels)with no travelling needed. It just seems its a fact from using separate servers and not wanting to do the complex code to interlink them.
I do suspect CCP is stuck with:
1. The terrible UI being useless for anything in WIS. Even walking would be an exercise in click click click. So they must sort that out. Player mods also become even more important unless they do a great job of UI options, such as fonts and skins, chat channel colour coding etc.
2. Thinking of things that are more than just gimmicks (like gambling)
3. Doing it all in a way that does not upset purists.
I would hate to design WIS with my hands tied behind my back but that's exactly how CCP are having to operate. No wonder it's late.

Instanced, doubtful.
Solution: make stations GIA-****ING-NORMOUS!

Even if only 1/10th of pilots left their pods in Jita M4, you would still have give or take 100 pilots running around, which is a computational challenge for any program.
I will be very interested to see how CCP solves this, but my best guess would be that each section of the station acts as its own system.
So you might have that 100-150 people broken down into: 20 in Bar 1 20 in Bar 2 30 in Main Area 20 in Instanced Rooms etc. etc.
They will probably introduce population cap limits on each area depending on testing results. But now that I look at it, this will def be an instanced "node" system, very similar to the existing server structure.

I have it on good authority that http://www.foddy.net/Athletics.html will be the UI CCP has settled on for walking in stations.
CCP has been much maligned for their difficult to use and counter-intuitive user interfaces. However, test driving the walking in stations has definitely made me think there's too much dumbing down going on targeting the WoW crowd.

Edited by: TRD 2371 on 13/11/2009 09:55:05 besides walking stations im personally looking very much forward to: walking in ships and bringing in the crew factor so one can identify with it. ideally i want to be able to customize it all. especially the interiors. and it would be cool to be able to watch how a ship is being constructed. just so many ideas and so little time. need an extra lifetime.

"I haven't bothered to read anything published this far and am supporting facts with my assumptions", right?
Assuming there's no massive change in design, the two most major complaints (need to walk back to your ship and /dance) have already been dealt with.
Instead of walking all the way, enter the closest elevator - which are designed to be able to take you to any area in the station, including your ship.
/dance not being allowed at all, except possibly on a bar / nightclub dance floor.
Blocking: Will not be implemented - instead, a "slipping thru" animation will be played. (Of course, room owners can set permissions on who are allowed to be there - I wonder how "throwing people out" will be implemented.
Overcrowding: Areas are at least designed to have a maximum limit of people in them, depending on the area size. So station have multiple decks or something. Still can't block someone by filling the area between their location and their destination due to magic elevators.
