Edited by: Lance Fighter on 19/11/2009 03:57:24 I require something else to play.
At the moment, im trying to keep myself occupied with another run of X3tc, but my heart isnt really into it..
I am not really looking much for plot, as those inevitably get boring (i tried to run through EV:nova once, and got sucked into the lamer plot lines.. the one where you are forced into it. Yea. ruined it for me.) Anyway, im rather into exploration.. Not knowing whats behind that door, but at the same time, I will almost invariably go to a wiki for the game to make sure im doing it right x3tc is really the only game I dont do stuff like that in, but only because ive been an x-gamer for a while now and know most of it >.>
Anyway, I am open to an RTS, or something along those lines. FPS, id rather stay away from, but if youve a suggestion, ill take it. Unfortunately, my internet is too unreliable to play any proper games online (eve is ok, if jumpy, other games i tend to get disconnected often). For the record, games ive played and liked, might steer you in the right direction:
HW1/2 TA x3r/tc uhh eve :p oblivion was ok, was kinda annoying to explore the countryside and find that you cant climb that mountain.. morrowind was better in that respect, and I preferred the exploration style of morrowind warzone 2100 mount and blade (well, a good rpg/rts, not so much exploration) Spore was ok, but too grind-y at the end And uh, thats all I can think of at this point.
Ive heard good and bad reviews about Dragon Age, for instance its rather plot driven, and 'just another fantasy rpg', both of which are *shrug*
Anyway, if anyone can throw out a random game here thats awesome, I will love you forever. Or, until someone throws out a better game. >.>
eidt. Browsing through the steam indie games, I came across a "ai war:fleet command".. an RTS based around macromanagement and keeping the AI from getting to smart Anyone tried this? I bought Mass effect for the pc off steam for $9.99 and its probably the best rpg I have ever played even though I'm only at 19% completed. You can wander around for ages getting immersed in the game universe and not even have to look at the main plot unless you want to. The rts choice would be Sins of a Solar Empire with the Entrenchment addon along with the mad scientist tech mod and the volumetric explosions and effects mod. Pure 4x rts gaming bliss right there.

Freelancer doesnt seem right somehow >.> Maybe its how the wikipedia page lists the plot and 2 hours worth of unskippable cut scenes..
Mass Effect is something I actually never thought of, not sure why. I will certainly look into it
Sins seemed kinda meh; Im not that great at managing a huge fleet without proper logistics lines (i cant queue units to be delivered in a different system? lame.) I might try it again, as I never did get around to getting the entrapment addon thingie.. Its a pity i dont really know any other PC gamers around here, i would love to sit down and play some quality 8h SoaSE games with/against real people. OHGODS BELOW THIS LINE IS MY SIG !!!! SRSLY! Dragon age is the dog's boll0cks, it's fun, well made and take DAYS to complete. Game of the year for me, possibly game of the decade. Definitely better than mass effect, 100 times better than Oblivion. If you had to choose between DA and borderlands I pity the folks who chose borderlands (and that's a fun game).
MW2 is MP only, the SP is useless, boring, super linear and completely laughable.

The meh probably came from the underwhelming visual effects for fights. That was fixed by the most recent Manshooter effects mod who redid all the effects in the game making them race specific with a bunch of well made race specific explosion sounds. As far as the logistics lines you can set up a queue of ships at any shipyard and have it send them to any gravity well you want down to the exact location where they will autojoin any active fleets already there. Hell you can even set an enemy planet as the rally point if you want.
I'm not much into the online part as I like to play days long comp stomps vs multiple unfair level ai with a nifty mod I made that increases all the starbases range and power to rival that of a fully upgraded cap fleet with support. Works great at chokes when 4 ai send full fleets to melt your planet so you might just have time to reinforce and really makes going on the offensive a gamble even if all they have is a single starbase with planetary defenses. Losing a few level 10 caps is painful when it takes ages to get the new ones up to the point they are usefull again. But as far as online games there is a small but dedicated core of players who just love other people who love long games. Just go to the multiplayer organization forum and introduce yourself.

And I remembered why it sounded familiar. I have a dislike for turn based strategy games... I dunno why, but I never could get into them properly. the entire Civ line could best be described as 'meh', with occasional 'one more turn for a wonder!'.

A little note on mass effect. It is a good game, but there are some negatives. In fallout 3 terms, It has a lot of meaningless optional "exploring" too. And I mean boring **** that just re-uses the same indoor maps over and over. The exploring is made even more useless than in F3, since loot and enemies scale to your level. So it really is optional, but the special abilities gained from leveling make a difference, so it isn't useless either.
The main plot is much better and longer, but it doesn't take long to complete it. RP and immersion is also much better, but there are only a few points in the game, where your choice really makes a difference. The better dialogue options mostly just let you choose between a nice guy and a tough guy. A good and solid RPG especially, since you don't have to pay the full price at this point.

I played ME for the 1st time a couple months ago (so very much a late comer). I was shocked I hadn't been introduced to this game earlier.
The weak points of the game are very apparent once you start exploring planets. (namely, unnecessary and very time consuming exploration in your ATV).
Don't bother w/ unnecessary exploration and you'll find Mass Effect to be one of the better action/rpg games out there. Can't wait for ME2. ---------- Anyway, I'm sorry, but that just happens to be how *I* feel about it. What do you think? |

I have to agree with Destination Skillqueue. Mass Effect has a very cool storyline and cinematics, but the gameplay is pretty weak. If you get rid of all the pointless exploring, it doesn't take that long to complete. And the exploring stuff really is pointless, boring and repetitive. Really, I went to every location you go to, surveyed every resource, did every base, and in the end you don't get any special prize or even an Xbox achievement for it. Anytime you want to search a dead body, hack a computer system, pick a lock, etc. you are given the same stupid simon-says style push button "minigame". The combat system is also somewhat clumsy and unbalanced. You can try different classes and skill setups, but there's really only a couple that are efficient and easy to work with. YOu're not really missing anything if you don't try the others. It really felt like Bioware rushed to get it out the door and didn't develop it as well their other games. But again, the cinematics and storyline alone make it worth playing. If you like Babylon 5 you will like this game. They should really have just made this a movie.

Nope, no mods, atleast not officially. It may be Unreal Engine based, but it's still a console port (although a very good one, with a much improved interface). There are bound to be some though. I do recommend a little ini editing, the default texture resolutions are rather low for most PCs even on max detail settings.

Edited by: Elukka on 20/11/2009 20:05:22 Your games list is very similar to mine.
I suggest the Thief series. I bought the box with all three a while back and it was worth it for sure. It's linear in the sense that you play missions in sequence like most games, but it's very freeform. The maps in all three games are plenty big, though I believe 2 has the biggest. You're not walked through it - your tasks are like, "steal this thing", and it's entirely up to you how you go about doing it. Most places on most missions you don't even have to visit, but you will if you like to explore.
It's set in this renaissance fantasy world with some steampunk thrown in for a good measure. It's actually pretty interesting, and so are the stories, but exploring and sneaking and stealing stuff is definitely the meat of the game.

Hey LF, you taking an extended break from Eve, or just talking in general terms for when you aren't on TQ? Anyway, if you're looking for something fun for the PC, and haven't already played them, I'd suggest:
Dragon Age - Bad reviews or not, just-another-fantasy game or not, it's an incredibly well crafted game, polished to a mirror gleam and quite easy to get to grips with. My first run thru took a total of 74 hours, not including deaths and reloads, so you can be assured that you'll get your money's worth. And like previous BW RPGs, the toolset is readily available to add your own and player made mods and content.
Hitman Contracts & Blood Money - Both good games. Combination of stealth and action, you choose how to complete each mission. Fun and challenging, particularly if you try to be a perfect assassin instead of a psychopath.
As suggested above, Thief games are pretty good. Vampire: Masquerade - Bloodlines is an excellent RPG (make sure to get latest fan patch) and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident is an awesome strategy/action game with a lot of the things you likely love about Eve (when it's finished I will GUARANTEE the first thing you'll do is go to google to search for news on a sequel). BioShock and Tron 2.0 are fantastic FPSs with minor RPG elements, as is Dark Messiah (albeit a little less so). I'm not usually a fan of strategy games but Civ4 (pplus expansions) is a great turn-based game. -------------

Mostly taking a break till dominion, or maybe longer depending on what i feel like then, and when exams are I will, of course, keep forum whoring to my best
Well the thing about dragon age is.. I dont care for 'just another fantasy game', even if you did polish it to a mirror sheen... Well maybe I do. Is there a demo someplace?
Hitman/thief sound interesting, I will look into those as well.
Uhm, perhaps twilight (ugh) has turned me off to vampires forever, but youll have to forgive me if Vampire: Masquerade sounds boring
Nexus, played through that.. Might again.. *shrug* the beginning is just too boring >.< and its a pity there wont be a sequel. Id even take whatever build they were running for that tech video on youtube..
Civ 4 is just too meh for my tastes. Sure, great galactic conquest.. Yay, each turn takes me 20 minutes. I end up trying to figure out why my tanks havnt rolled over someones capital yet.. I mean, I told them to an hour ago.. What do you mean only 2 turns have went by OHGODS BELOW THIS LINE IS MY SIG !!!! SRSLY! Blane Xero > Lance is at -0.9 sec status with a 1 million bounty. I've been retro-gaming for a while. Beneath A Steel Sky has a free-release, which has been quite fun.
I've also revisited some of my old MMO Games just to see whether the magic's still there. Mostly it isn't... but it was a fun little trip down Nostalgia Lane.
