Hi we have had a corp 7 person ice mining op in hi-sec system with 7 mackinaws worth aprox 500 mil isk destroyed without warning or possible chance of escape by a lone b/ship with smart bombs . My CONCERN is in 00 you can defend yourself by intel to run away or by force to protect such an operation how do we mine ice in hi-sec as a group with this game mechanic and the risk of loosing everyone's ship . The use of smart bombs in highsec should be banded as they are vertually a doomsday device against soft unprepared targets .
Thank You Tarago

Edited by: Avoida on 21/11/2009 00:47:21 Don't be so stupid as to mine all crowded around the same stupid jetcan first off. Secondly, a BS or two sitting nearby with all miners targeted and enough remote reppers ready to fire could have helped save your stupid butts.
Empire is safer...not 100% safe. Concord only responds, not protects.
Edit: oh, and the first rule of EVE is never trust anybody. You should have started getting out of the way the minute that BS showed up.

It does suck to lose ships like that, but I have to admit. If i see a battleship doing a rat patrol i just assume it is attacking miners. Even if it has a positive sec rating I would normally finish up and move to another location.
There simply is no need for the player to be in a ship that size. Another option is to reduce the cargo space (i know that sucks) and switch to a more defnsive ship config. A medium shield extender, auxilliary power and shield hardener would probably have kept you ships around until Concord shows up.

People in high sec have to watch out for suicide gankers people in 0.0 have to watch out for roaming gangs and much much stronger NPCs, seems pretty fair imho.
Yeah it sucks to lose a bunch of high value ships like that but really it's not all that hard to avoid, you just have to be paying attention more often which isn't all that unlike what nullsec people face.

You said it right, against soft, unprepared targets.
Is a reason why they are called suicide bombers. There is an easy way around it, don't stay blobbed up, or fit your mining ships for defence instead of cargo expanders. a tanked hulk can take smartbombs easy. Also, use that rokh tractor bonus, keep your ships spaced. When we go out on mining ops, all our miners are 20km away from reachother, one orca is supplying full ganglinks, other is pulling in the cans for haulers to pick up from and take away.

You seem to think Jetcan mining was an intended feature. It wasn't.

to go into a little more detail on this:
using jettisoned cargo containers is a tolerated exploit of the game's in-space TRASH item mechanic.
it comes with inherit risks which is why it is in fact tolerated.
on topic:
1) mackinaws are dirt cheap for barges 2) bunching up is like painting a fat bullseye made of tears and $ signs on your forehead. 3) tank your ships and stop going for the max time afk setups or pay the price for not actively playing the game. 4) invest in an orca (cycle time ganglink, tractor beams, RR)
flames: 1) HA HA! 2) so sorry you lost 7 cheap exhumers to a smart ACTIVE player.. NOT! 3) why you mining ice to begin with? talk about ****ty isk/hr... oh you aren't playing the game are you? 4) jet can ice mining? where do you mine again? i want some free blocks... only way i could ever stand mining ice is off morons like you. Learn to play a game before you purchase your character.
Just as a heads up, it's also fun to use a locator agent to find you blobbing it up in weak ships in highsec again.
Welcome to EVE Online.

SB rage is like 5km... If you had 7 barges located within a sphere of 5km range... OMG WHY?! Buy an orca for 500m with rigs... loads of cargo space, mining bonuses and the long, long tractor so you can stay spread apart.
The orca is more efficient with max skills and bonuses after the 5th exhumer of the same type. If you had 7 barge, buy 6 new ones and an orca. Will save time ,you won't have to be blobed in one place and you'll mine faster.

Dont hot box and mine.
Dont go afk while mining (I went afk for 1 min, in a guarded 0.0 system, quiet as the grave for months, went to turn my heating down.. came back dead/podded by a log on/logoff opportunist... so just don't be afk)
Its a game... if you lose something you adapt and try again

Maybe originally, but it does fill a needed void of an effective way to transport ores. Secure cans are just way too small. So unless the intended feature was for every hulk to need it's own personal industrial... While it may have originally been considered an exploit, the parts with can flipping etc, I feel has become a necessary part of game mechanics.
Either that or introduce another bigger can size and give mining ships the extra high slot to be able to pull cans back to them... (or else have to have some frigate zipping around towing cans...)

Funny that, because you're absolutely right, but you know what? Have you tried the tutorial lately? They now teach jet can mining in the tutorial! Yeah, no kidding! I'd say that pretty much qualifies as an intended feature.

So in other words, each miner should have it's own orca pilot or stay all blobbed up around orca thereby creating the smartbomb topic we are saying ways around?
Orca has a tractor bonus, one would assume to tractor stuff like jetcans...
