So I'm in Australia to work, but I'm unsure as to how the copyright laws in Australia work and what steps authorities have taken in the past to prevent the practice, and punish those that break the law

To practice what?? selling illegal DVD's? yeah that's illegal and you'll get caught and punished.
But seriously, a more specific question would be a big help. |

New State laws in Australia now make Pirating Computer Software a Transportation Offense. Any offender found guilty will be sent to England for a period of no less than 5 years.
Apparantly for some reason, this type of crime has decreased by 93% since the law was introduced. http://www.pixelopia.co.uk/files/signature.jpg |

You'd be better off asking here: Whirlpool Forums
It's where much of the Aussie digerati gather.

Sorry, was referring specifically to file-sharing of copyrighted material.
I know it is illegal in many countries, and wouldn't want to break the law, especially if there was a high chance of getting caught

Same as other western countries. Get caught, get a whopping fine. As well as jail time. Depending on what the file is, the fine can range from 10,000 to 100,000+.

Yeah, it's especially immoral if you get caught! Otherwise it's not quite as immoral.

He was talking about legality, not morality. ----------------

For a time, file sharing in Canada of copyrighted material was actually quite legal. As of now, I believe it's not 'legal' but not 'illegal' either.
And if you go to Somalia, you can download anything you like -------------
