I'd like to ask for some clarification here;
The API will be able to read-off what improvement levels are currently *implemented* in each 0.0 system, or what improvement levels are *possible* in each system?
Sov levels were one thing, but could this be giving away valuable intel that we'd previously have to go and scout-out for ourselves?

For once CCP released a dev blog that is really in depth on what they are doing. Even if I did have to read some parts a couple of times to understand it I enjoy actually seeing everything going on behind the scenes.
Now if only CCP would do this for the new infastructure upgrades instead of leaving us in the dark wondering what exactly the numbers are behind what they have told us so far.

Yes it is the corporation, at the moment only corporations can launch and claim space on behalf of a alliance.
soooo......... is this a slip of the tung or do you guys have more coming down the pike after this years scrum? Thanks, Zen

To pre-emtively break some hearts - the API will not give you any mail bodies or detailed notification information, nor will you be able to send mail through the API. You will not be able to page through your mail/notifications like the wallet pages allow. This is an API feature that is likely to be under heavy bombardment so we've had to contain our enthusiasm for pleasing the crowd quite a bit.
*yawn*
To think..... You could have had gmail (or any) style interface and never have to deal with a half-assed API mail count method if you had just given us a POP3 server and been done with it.

So as it seems you guys are the team working on the API what would be the posiblity of getting this as a feature of the API after dominion?

As far as i understand in my previous thread, you won't be able to read hub upgrades in the public api. But TCU/SBU are included which is okay, if an alliance has sov in a particular system they've a TCU anyway. Regaring the System Indexes (strategy/industry/military) I suppose that CCP will release those information soon a few days or weeks after the initional dominion release.
btw, those indexes (1..5) from every single system are viewable and accessible anyway through the ingame sovereignty dashboard.

Thumbs up on this dev blog and the follow up. If only other dev blogs had followed this model (e.g. the cap changes). Model that works 1) Write a dev blog that is based on solid game mechanics, is well thought out and has just enough humour to keep the tone light without losing the impact of the content 2) Follow up the questions/comments with more info as required in an easy to follow manner, allowing the thoughts of the userbase to grow as they digest the information

Congratulations, you have pre-crippled the mail API.
This is how POP3 works - it polls for all the available messages and downloads them. If you don't keep a copy, you have lost them message as it is not stored on the PoP3 server for a second donwnload.

I realize. Yet you can configure most email clients to save copies of messages on the server, making your point moot.
Also, aiming to be like Pop3 in that regard is aiming rather low, I'd say.

Relax guys. They don't even know how much impact this is going to have on the whole system. They DO intend to release the mail system to 'out-of-game-world' through the New Eden project, at which point, it'll probably enter the API as well.

We don't currently have a API for the Hub Upgrades. We have yet to decided exactly what API will by created for the upgrades. Currently you can see what level all the dev indexes are from within the game. Sop there we would not be exposing any more than what is available in game.

No just that things may change in the future, and even I don't know what will happen. Don't read anything more into this than the letters used to make the words, other wise the people from the internets will start sending you pictures of cats.

Nice to see the start of the mail API.
Has CCP managed to provide an API test server yet? As mentioned by Lingorm at the end of last year (http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=955013), this would be made available "in the New Year". Granted, he didn't say which New Year but it would certainly be nice to have this implemented so we can:
- Test the new API features prior to deployment to TQ
- Prepare our applications to handle the new APIs

A test server and customizable API keys are on Elerhino's List which is currently stored in his Fenrir. I'm semi-optimistic about getting plenty of time for this in the comming months but plans at CCP are constantly subject to change so I can't promise anything.

This will simply become a test of people's ability to fit the greatest possible amount of information into a title. Maybe someone could let us know the reasoning behind not including them.

Sure - Performance concerns. The mail bodies can be quite large and heavy and hard to fit through the API. We'll consider adding them later but right now we need to be a bit minimalistic.

Great news about the changes!
Is there any change to the API version or is this still APIv2?
I know not really that important and easy enough to find out in a few days but still worth asking. -----------------------------------------

This, sir, is very good news to me! The "show nothing/everything" approach with the Limited/Full key was a good start to get the API going, but we are all aware of the fact that people need to be paranoid in this game. Letting the player decide what information his key reveals, will surely be a relieve for a lot of players.
On a related note: we 3rd party developers are perhaps the smallest group with a common interest in EVE. And we will never be able to start threadnaughts like the recent *youknowwhichflamefestimreferingto* to catch your attention. So, it's good to see that CCP nonetheless does listen to us.

I don't like the API method on eve-mails. What happens when you enter the game and read the mails? Do you have to wait 6 hours to mark those messges as read? If you want to request the full message list, do you have to wait 6 hours without using the api or is it 6 hours since the first request?
What I propose: Have a reduced, more frecuent api request that only gives you the total number of mails, number of unreaded on each type (corporation, alliance, character or list), and the id of unreaded mails, not restricted by date (restrict the max number of unreaded ids sent if neccesary).
Then have the full message api request restricted as you have it now, I'm sure a lot of aplications will not need all data as they will just have/be new mail notifications. This way you can provide more frecuent access without performance issues since you are providing less data, and people who don't need all data will help on limiting performance issues too by requesting less data.
Edit: Treating people as persons instead of things now, XD.

Any chance we could get an api list /eve/NotifyTypes.xml.asp to have the notification types? Similar of course to the /eve/RefTypes.xml.asp for Journal walking?
Nice work, thanks! -- I often heard the Sky's the limit, sadly I'm broke fairly often. |
