Does optimal range matter for how close you can be to a target to hit it? What i mean is i am having a very hard problem hitting anything within 10k with my beam lasers which optimal are 32k. Im wondering if i just need more tracking to hit stuff that close or do i need to switch to pulse

I do believe tracking is your problem. I would only switch to pulses if you can use T2. If you cant, T1 pulses range is kind of a problem.

This.
Beams tend to have poor tracking, so fast-moving targets in close range will result in lots of misses for you. If possible, switch to the shorter-range beams, as they're track better than the big ones.
If you have drones, use them to manage close-orbiting targets, and a Stasis Webifier can help alot too.
The other tactic I use is to use afterburners and thrust away from the targets, trying to open space between us. Doesn't always work (especially when you're webbed), but it can help.

Edited by: Jovialmadness on 30/11/2009 18:44:09 If you have your amarr support gunnery skills to a nice level just use an abaddon with the lowest beams, heavy beams I believe, elwith some tracking enhancement. I used those towards the end of my missioning days and had great range, decent dps and good enoughtracking mixed with a nice web to hit the up close bs's.
I think it got even better in a paladin... |

To answer the OP's initial question, optimal range is defined as the range within which you don't have any miss chance due to range. This means that if you have an optimal range of 30km and you have one target at 10km and one at 20km, you'll hit both targets equally well if both targets have the same angular velocity.
Note of course that the closer a target is, the harder it is to track; something moving at 100 m/s transversal is easy to track at 30km but much harder at 2km.
But yes, you will need more tracking. Pulse lasers have better tracking then beams but less range; if you need the range of beams consider fitting an afterburner to be able to move your ship to get transversal down, or for an easier solution fit a web (or a tracking computer if you can hit sort of well but would like to hit better). ________________

Turn on Angular Velocity in your overview, watch the numbers when you use your weapons and compare that with the tracking stats on your guns.
