Somali sea gangs lure investors at pirate lair
Quote: Piracy investor Sahra Ibrahim, a 22-year-old divorcee, was lined up with others waiting for her cut of a ransom pay-out after one of the gangs freed a Spanish tuna fishing vessel.
"I am waiting for my share after I contributed a rocket-propelled grenade for the operation," she said, adding that she got the weapon from her ex-husband in alimony.
Quote: "Four months ago, during the monsoon rains, we decided to set up this stock exchange. We started with 15 'maritime companies' and now we are hosting 72. Ten of them have so far been successful at hijacking," Mohammed said.
"The shares are open to all and everybody can take part, whether personally at sea or on land by providing cash, weapons or useful materials ... we've made piracy a community activity."
Haradheere, 400 km (250 miles) northeast of Mogadishu, used to be a small fishing village. Now it is a bustling town where luxury 4x4 cars owned by the pirates and those who bankroll them create honking traffic jams along its pot-holed, dusty streets.

Makes me wonder who is going to be the first to invade Somalia to put an end to the piracy. I don't think it is a matter of "if" anymore, just "when". -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

I'm betting multinationals who own the stuff they're hijacking. If these pirates don't change how they do business (ie racketeering or escorting instead of hijacking) someone with more money and special forces for hire going to come down on them. All they have to do is hijack the wrong boat and that'll be the end of that.

The way it's going it will not be any country prolly. They will end up in the crosshairs of one of those 'private security firms' that are not that tiied up with all the 'rules of engagement' the day it is economically sensible for some company to do it.

Surely you mean 'ensuring'? I can't see many Somalian pirates phoning up the Provincial or asking Norwich Union to quote them happy -------------

Except you could use that story of those 3 Ugandan dudes operating there way through Mogadishu with FAL's, utterly taking on half of the local militia and still getting out intact, instead of watching a bunch of Americans getting shot up. Would be more interesting. I have to find that article...
Edit: Also welcome to Somali Boom Towns.

That would be something akin to expecting Privateers to do a stand up fight instead of docking

if the HIgh Energy Research science geeks at DARPA get their math right the USMC really will Pew Pew, as in laser beams. i mean the USAF has a 747 with a Small Beam Laser I, and they are working on Pulse Lasers for the C130 Spectre and some kinda laser that can be mounted is a HUMVEE.
