I need some advice. Is an hour commute a lot? I work about 14 hour days and I have two options:
A 20 minute commute from an area that is...I saw rift raft when I was checking out apartments, lets say that.
An hour long commute, more if there is traffic(there wouldn't be going in but pretty sure there would be coming out), but from a very very good neighborhood.
What do you think? Anyone ever commute long distances like that? Is it as tiring as it seems? Also, losing two hours of the day sounds horrible considering im strapped for time already.

1. It's riff raff
2. I do an hour and a half commute for school and it sucks. Not to mention the cost of gas

It's odd how you get used to a commute and just live with it - it only gets frustrating when traffic screws up and you are later than usual. Think of the time you do spend away from work, do you want to be disturbed by "riff raff" or spend it in a nice place with nice restaurants and people...?
I'd go for the nice neighborhood.

living off campus from my university, the only commute is a short bus ride from here to there. Problem is, the closer it gets to classtime, the longer it takes for people to get on the bus.. and the more people are trying to get on. So basically, I leave an hour early for class, catch the empty bus, and get on campus with enough spare time to get lunch, and still show up 15 minutes early for class.

14 hour days? doing what?
at that point, the 2+ hours for travel, and you're cutting into the time you have for eating and sleeping. That's going to be very punishing, and you're getting very likely to fall asleep at the wheel.
I've done similar kinds of distances doing an outdoors job and it does get tiring. Enough so that weekends you don't get anything done.

I do 45-70 minutes(Depending on how well-timed the bus is, if the train is late, if the class takes 5-10 too long, etc) of commute twice a day.
I listen to audiobooks on my commute, which makes it almost nice. But having to both go by bus, train and bicycle makes it a pain too.
But if you do 14 hour days, I wouldn't dare driving for a full hour. That would be suicide.

Edited by: Irida Mershkov on 06/12/2009 02:47:34 My commute to work is about an hour/hour + fifteen minutes.
Edit: for 10-12 hour shifts, I reccomend music, or as suggested above, Audiobooks, or just actual books which is what I do. Makes a good way to read The Culture novels on the way to and from work.
