Edited by: Commander Criton on 06/12/2009 13:37:54 So its that time of the year when I feel I need to upgrade my PC.
Current setup:
Microsoft Windows 7 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz @ 3.00GHz+ Quad Core Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 Dominator Memory Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache BFG GEFORCE GTX 280 1GB CARD
Upgrades:
Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 Dominator Memory (Making it a total of 8GB)
So the advice I'm looking for is should I stick with the GTX 280 G-Card or should I replace that too if so what do you recommend? I'm hoping the upgrades solves the problems with graphical lag and lag spikes I've been getting the last week.

I am very surprised you are getting graphical lag issues with that setup. I am running Eve on a considerably older machine and I dont have any problems at all, im running everything maxed out.
I using a C2D E4600, 2GB OCZ RAM @ 800Mhz, WinXP Pro and a XFX 8800GT card.
I would look at other possible causes of the problem like drivers, other running processes etc.

Start by checking during playing how much memory you are using, because i really doubt you need more than 4GB. And I am not really into GPUs, but afaik that one should be fast enough, might be that you have other problems than hardware.

The rig is fine. Go into the eve settings and turn Texture Detail to Medium instead of High. And turn Eve-Voice off. Lag gone.

He doesn't need to turn anything off, i am surprised that he is having issues with the gaming rig setup which is better then my gaming rig.
amd x2 6400 4 gig memory 16 meg cach hd 8800gt
I can run 4 eves at once with no issues, most likely your issue in drivers.
When you installed windows 7 did you update chipset/graphics/sound drivers/lan?

So you don't think I need a new graphics card? Lol I keep getting told the GTX 280 is crap and I should get a radeon.
When I installed windows I did the graphics but now that you mention it I think the rest where done by windows I will try updating them all.

I still have an "old" dualcore E6700, 8GB ram, a GTX 295 and windows 7. I run several accounts at the same time without any issues and quality set to high. Your PC is fine, also Dominion doesn't seem to use more memory or cpu.
I'm going to assume it's a driver issue, I'm guessing you installed some game short while ago that updated your directX, which is now conflicting with the vid driver you didn't update. Friend of mine had that issue with his ATI after he installed Dragon Age; new directX + old viddrivers actually made his system unstable, he updated drivers and has yet to crash since.

With this setup, the best advice regarding upgrading, is don't. This machine is current gen in every way and the only upgrade path available really is to buy the best of everything new. You'd need an i7, triple channel DDR3, SSD or Velociraptor HDDs and so on. All expensive and all would give little real tangible benefits, particularly with gaming, compared with your current.
I have more or less the same setup as you as it goes...same CPU (not overclocked tho), 4x 1GB OCZ DDR2, BFG GTX285 and a 300GB Velociraptor, and can run every game to date on max without issue at 1920x1080 with FSAA. If you're experiencing lag you should really be looking elsewhere.
- Background apps running (eg. perhaps A/V or Windows Indexing service is misbehaving) Bring up task manager with Eve running and check performance tab. See where your CPU and memory is going - Upgrade drivers Install latest 195.?? reference drivers from nVidia's site. - Turn off Eve voice thing - Check if your PC is getting abnormally hot. Touch the case after Eve has been running for 5-10mins and if it's very hot to the touch you might want to consider better airflow for your case. - Restart your router/run speed test Your router might be outta memory or have a full NAT/routing table. Try restarting it. Run a speed test on your Net connection to see if there might be network issues causing lag.
Your current rig is far beyond sufficient for running Eve and most, if not all current gen games, well. If you're experiencing graphical glitches it's not gonna be down to not having enough power. -------------

Radeon(amd)cards are currently winning the high end videocard market but your 280gtx is twice as fast as my 8800gt. You have a driver issue, overheating or your internet connection is having issues.
Geforce drivers are 10x better then ati/amd graphic drivers.

Your rig is fine, you don't need to upgrade it for the sake of EVE.
I run E2160 @ 3.3ghz dual core (overclocked from 1.8ghz!) 6gb DDR2 8800GT (overclocked about 12%)
Built it exactly two years ago for about 500 bux, just before Trinity came out. And I get 120-200 FPS, despite the crappy 1mb L2 cache on the processor. If you are getting issues with EVE, it isn't hardware related.
If you want to upgrade in general, I wouldn't do it at this point in time. Sata3 and USB3 motherboards are slowly coming out, as is DX11. Having those three technologies should future proof your system pretty well. DDR3 and NAND prices should be dropping in Q1 as well, and we'll see some real world benches from Lucidlogix Hydra chip.
The only advantage of upgrading now would be good performance for little money.. but given my 2-3 year old system runs any new game just fine, there isn't much reason to care about performance until PC games start making use of new hardware properly.

ITT: fine gaming rigs.. I too will post mine then.
Q9650 @ 3.2 asus rampage extreme MB (best mobo i've ever had) 4gb ocz xlc 1600mhz (just 1600 mhz yes, but sweet ass timings) 2x hd4870x2 stock clock. Old noisy raptor 74 as boot, 750gb and 250 gb for stuff. completely watercooled, except the hdd's. using a 18w pump with upgraded head, 1x360mm+1x240mm radiators, cant remember cooling head brands :s
3dmark 06 gave around 21k points, with only 1 gfx card in at that time. fair enough. eve used to run at 499 fps according to fraps, but are now locked at 60. (maybe i've pushed vertical sync, havnt i?)..
Dont really need to upgrade, but im soo into the hd5970 cards and i7, but would prolly be a waste of money

Can't resist.
Here goes, should have the last components this week (the videocard was a pain to get hold of), assembly ASAP after that.
Intel Core i5-750 MSI P55-GD65 Motherboard 8GB Kingston HyperX 1333 DDR3 (7-7-7-20) Intel X-25M 80GB SSD 2x Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB HDDs ATI HD5870 1GB
All of that contained in a Cosmos 1000 case. Added a Aerocool Touch-2000 Fancontroller to keep some of the 7 fans in the case in check.

Very interesting to know what people have. I am attempting to replace an ageing Classic Athlon XP based computer, 1.5gb ram, 6600 graphics etc, which suffers terrible frame rates duing fleet battles. I am very slowling accumulating the parts for a new computer but have yet to buy the mainboard, cpu, memory and graphics. So with the computer specs you have above, what frame rates do you get for either normal play and fleet battles? At which point does the system spec make little difference to actual eve gameplay? e.g. does your ú300 graphics card have much of a performance advantage over a ú130 graphics card (in relation to Eve game play).

Given that EVE's engine is relatively light, a 300 pound card will do just as well (or badly) as a 100 pound card in a high lag situation, because at that point the card isn't the bottleneck but the data received from the server is.
It simply can't update faster than it is doing, there's a good reason you can reinforce nodes if you're planning a big fight there. That helps alleviate the problem unless the numbers get even higher.
But discounting a situation where the videocard isn't to blame for the bad FPS, then any decent card (as in nVidia GT200 series and ATI HD4000-5000 series) will give you very good FPS in most situations.
