Folks,
We will be soon be removing /map/SovereigntyStatus.xml.aspx API which allows you to see the sovereignty structure status for the universe. We would like to eventually re-release it with restrictions to either the corporation or alliance owning the sovereignty structures so they can get a good overview of the status of their solar systems.
The information provided by this view was far too extensive compared to what is available ingame where you should rely on traditional scouting for this intelligence data. The 'fog of war' should be maintained here without having a far too revealing view through the API.
As per CCP Elerhino and Incognito's previous responses, we will also be working on adding more relevant sovereignty APIs in the future such as the sovereignty index and changes overviews from the dashboard in related ongoing development.

BAD IDEA!
One of the greatest things EVE haves is to be able to see the Sovereignty changes day by day, to see were the wars are happening and the changes that are going on. For example, when BOB got dismantled was great to see the alliances fighting for the space over the days. After the removal, it will all be just a big blank space that we don't know nothing about it.

One thing was just came into my mind. If I haven't put a page parsing and presenting all the details from that API that fast, I would suppose that nobody would even care about it and everybody would just watching that kind of intel in their little closed backroom.
Had nobody @CCP expected this result before the launch? I mean only one hour after this API was available I had all those sensitive informations already on my evemaps page and visible for everybody and a couple of days later a more improved version.
If you've any questions you can always contact me via email or however if you need some external options before releasing something new and revoking in later.

They didn't turned of the sovereignty changes api. DOTLAN EveMaps will still be able to track sovereignty changes. This API Change will only affect the soveignty structures. That means you won't see any structures currently onlining somewhere in space. But you'll still notice it, when you see alliance XYZ popping on on the map / sovereignty changes list (in-game on the sov dashboard or out-of-game on my page.)

So how exactly does an API that's been public knowledge for less than 2 weeks cause you to lose 2 years of your life?

Thing is Chronotis whatever good this may have done in your eyes it has also done one other thing: notification of SBUs now only goes to directors of sov holding corp. Given the short time frame of SBU online this makes sov warfare even more dependent on TZ as any attack when the holding corp is not on gets a hugh advantage.
Change the notification system every one in the alliance or all alliance directors. That will give smaller alliances a chance. I mean do you really want alliance chat to clog up with:
Anyone know if the the_too_tired corp handed over sov to the we_have_coverage_4thenext_6hours corp?

Sorry to hear this Wollari - I know how much time and effort you put into your amazing service.
CCP - You're kidding right? This is a game where you already allow remote intel on battles in distant regions, can instantly transfer credits from person in Outer Passage to another in Omist, and allow JC'ing from Empire to the arse-end of nul-sec and THIS is what bothers you?
It is exactly services like that provided by Wollari that keep adding excitement to the game. Think of the fleets that would have gone out specifically to kill an onlining TCU. It adds to the flavor of and activity in the game.
BAD CALL CCP!

I can see removing the sensitive information but how about a delayed system, say 24 hour delay on changes propegating into the api or reduce the sensitive information... how about just giving :-
- Alliance sov holder
- Corp owning the TCU
- State: Vulnerable, Invulnerable, SBU deployed
-- Users are like a virus - each causing a thousand tiny crises until the host finally dies. |

if it really really really has to be done, plz add some mentioning of sov in each tower.
but i believe noone knows what you are referring to as "fog of war". the cache expired after... 6h pre-dominion [yesyes it was reduced to 1h post dominion]?
sorry, but this is short sighted - very much like that time when you tried to remove the sales forum...
flying around an entire region does not qualify as replacement at all.
until you are done "working on" [thx for the future tense btw] more tools, you can't just kick null-sec some more right after you dumped billions of sov costs on them and/or forced them to blow even more money on more towers - now with a mix of sov savings and full fuel consumption.
server load? sure, let's have thousands of players spam the ingame map rather than visiting dotlan e.a. - putting the gist back into logistics |

Hey Chronotis,
Any updates on this? Have you guys decided on what to do with the sov structure info?
Corporation or Alliance limited calls seems like a good way to go about it. However, it wouldn't be overly revealing if a corp / alliance based call also returned enemy SBU's in systems claimed by your own Alliance / Corp. Basically because the whole alliance gets a notification of SBU's being anchored in your systems anyway.

I do agree that the sovereignty map is a little too much information. I know from personal experience that some of the decisions I am making right now are based off of sovereignty maps and I might not make such decisions without that information. This reflects how important this data is.
That being said, I think instead of just removing the API a better system could be put in place that would give players the information they want while still supporting the fog of war. This might be acheived by allowing corp/alliance scouting of sovereignty.
IE: If a corp/alliance member enters space owned by another corp/alliance then it will update a corp based API to add the sovereignty information. This means they have to go back regularly to see if sovereignty has changed. This way scouting becomes very important and users can legitimately get the sovereignty information they want in a way that makes sense and still supports the fog of war. All this requires that players be active and take risks, which is what gain is all about in Eve anyways.
Also, this systems opens up systems like DotLan to start a new player career. Sellers of quality charts. Charge isk for monthly access and make sure your people scout regularly to get accurate, up-to-date maps.
