Personally I think the Typhoon and the Tempest are the goofiest looking, worst designed flying garbage cans in all of Eve. How could the Tempest even take a torpedo hit in the neck just behind the bridge without breaking apart for example? Some Minmatar ships looks so fragile I don't see how they can even go to warp without flying apart
Other Minmatar ships with paper thin solar sails and weak looking 2D sprites for antennas stinking out here and there are next up for just plain ugly.
When whoever at CCP designed, designs these ships I think they just make a model/s first and then decide what it will be later. Stick on a few funny little cannons here and there call it a day.
Btw where are do the missiles and torpedoes come out of all the ships in the game? They just magically appear out of the middle of the ships like...magic

That's another thing. On alot of Minmatar ships and a few others with engines in the front you see the "exhaust" or "fire" or whatever you call it from the engines hitting the sides or other parts of the ship. Can't be good for the hulls when your thrust is hitting your own ship and slowing you down

Brutix. It's like a constipated person shoved a tampon (the ones with wings) up their rear, ate a lot of fiber, and then modeled the "result" using a freeware CAD system.

I like how you mention my two favorite ships, to each their own and all that.
Honestly, if I could get a typhoon setup with a tempest model I'd be in heaven.

The "crappy" looking ships in EVE are not bad design at all, but rather GREAT design. Their intention with a lot of the Minmatar ships was to make them look fragile, thrown together with little planning, and very..."We need spaceships to keep up with the other races"-ish.
I'm sure they spent hours and hours designing all of these ships, and I'm sure they ALL look exactly as they want them to.
EVE differs from other games in many ways, one of which being that every single aspect of the game has huge background, and every single aspect is designed to reflect that huge background. They didn't make every ship look awesome just because they can look awesome, they made them fit their origins, how they were built, why they were build, and when they were built.

Edited by: Night Epoch on 07/12/2009 23:01:14 The Moa/Onyx/Gila IMO is one of the ugliest ships in all of EVE.
The Proteus (some configurations) looks like a dust buster.
The Tempest looks like it'd have its bridge ripped off after one torpedo hit. A quarter mile of ... scaffolding? ... is all that's holding it on to the rest of the ship.
The Rook, although being one of the greatest ships in the game, is impossibly ugly to look at.
To mix things up: IMO these are the prettiest ships in the game:
1. Chimera 2. Nyx 3. Legion (most configurations) 4. Rokh 5. Apocalypse

Looking at ships with the eye to a 'form follows function' mindset really does make one wonder how those two relate when looking at many EVE ships.
Engine placement is another puzzling aspect of ship design. So many ships are lobsided if you look at relationship between a theoretical mass centerline and potential thrust output. An engineering friend of mine who's a bit OCD was looking at EVE and, after quite alot of calculations and modeling, determined that the vast majority of ships would spin out of control. Luckily for the Amarr very few ships appear to suffer that fate.
Yes, 'real' physics don't apply and yes, the uniqueness of the designs add alot of flavor to EVE, but sometimes it is difficult to suspend one's disbelief in the face of creativeness.

It's not just the apearance that's screwed with some of them, but also where the guns are placed and allowing for the widest firing arcs possible...For instance, the megathron, which with the way the guns are located, has no ability to shoot when the target is directly behind it,or from certain angles in the front,so if it were realworld,it would be screwed not being able to do any decent damage from those blind spots.

Well to be honest, the Moros is utterly horrible. And fly one. It looks a bit like two cow patties stacked on top of each other and welded together by enslaved Minmatar welders. Sadly, I actually thought it looked neat until I bought one, took her out for a spin and realized to my horror that what I thought was the front was really the back.

Caldari Badger, Badger Mark II, Bustard, and Crane were all good looking pre-Apocrypha. They've since had most of their antennae removed, which looks really barren. Then the texture went from worn transport ship to new Lego bricks.
