In the quest for more DPS, I purchased a Federation Navy 425mm rail. When checking out the dmg mod increase I was hoping to get I was surprised. I found a discrepancy with the damage modifier of the Federation Navy(FN)425mm rail's compared to the T2 425mm rail's.
The FN rail dmg mod is quoted as 3.475x The T2 rail dmg mod is quoted as 3.3x
I fitted both to my Navymega and found that (with my skills), the FN had a damage mod of 7.126x and the T2 had a damage mod of 7.389x. That's a difference of 0.26x per rail in favor of the T2.
At an avg cost of a FN rail being 70 mil, one has to ask. Are they worth it? Have they lost something in the Dominion patch? If they are supposed to be better than their T2 cousins, then why are they not?
The other FN modules I have do as their stats say, Why not the FN Rail's
Does any body have an answer?

The Faction rails use less cap to fire, and fit easyer on the grid.
thats it, so unless you dont have t2 rails or have fitting problems theres no reason at all to use them.
faction launchers however have a better rate of fire, they are the only weapon system like this (vs t2 at lvl 5 specialization)

You are probably forgetting to account for large rail spec skill : 2% dmg mod/lvl for large T2 rails.

Edited by: Arthur Frayn on 08/12/2009 18:07:52 T2 weapons are useful for fitting long range ammo. Only one or two T2 weapons work well with T2 high damage ammo. Cruise missile launchers are a good example: T2 high damage cruise missiles are quite good.
Although if you have level 4 in the specific weapon specialisation skill, you will always do more damage with a T2 gun than a faction gun. Oddly, the opposite is the case for missile launchers. -- Eventus stultorum magister. |

I found the T2 version (even with T1 ammo) to be the better of the two, but they are pretty heavy on the grid and skill requirements.

Yeah but t2 launchers get rage/fury that rock so hard you'd be just flat out full of crazy not to use.

Imho, the woth of FN 425's is the fact that they give close to T2 rail damage with out having to train for t2 rails. If that's not reason enough, look at how long it takes to train t2 large rails. by the most conservative estimates, at least 3 months or so.
So in other words, if Large t2 weapons are low on your training priority list (like they are for me...much more useful things I need to train first) and don't mind the pricetag, go for it. If you're fast-tracking gunnery skills(such as if you fly BS's often in your corp's fleet ops), or have them trained already, just use the T2s

Lol, ok; yeah, I'll agree to that. Was basing that off one of my non-combat alts that has no gunnery skills, which is unrealistic. Still, to get T2 guns for any BS pilot will still take about a month to a month and a half of focused training. Heck it takes about 11 days to train medium hybrid turret from IV to V and 20 days for large hybrid turret from IV to V. which is a while if you have other things to do. In those contexts, the FN rails still shine. I use em in my Kronos, and since I only need 4 the cost is mitigated somewhat. and as a plus, you can sell em once you do get T2 guns

Edited by: FT Diomedes on 09/12/2009 05:15:06 I used to use faction rails on my Navy Mega before I could use T2 rails. Since I had other things I had to train before spending the month to get T2 large rails, it seemed like a good use of my Fed Navy LP. I later sold them for a healthy profit.
PS - don't just compare gun for gun. Compare them in an actual fit. If fitting faction rails vs T2 rails lets you fit 7 425mm faction guns and 3x faction MFS's as opposed to 7x 350mm T2 guns and 2x MFS's (hypothetically), then the faction guns are better for your fit. ...this doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. Seems more like the rats are on fire, the ship is on fire, and the sea is full of drunk Russians. - Jacob Etienne |

As the author of this topic, I find that WPN skills trained do not apply, past a certain point to all faction WPN's. Granted, I do have the skills to use T2 rails and the CPU and grid requirements are close to the faction variant. I thank you all for your contribution and my enlightenment.
