So I'm in need of new laptop (has to be, I'm a student in school) and want to play EVE moderately smooth so I've been looking around, I have narrowed it down to these two laptops: HP dv6t and the Asus G51vx
HP Specs: Price $1,099.00 Intel 2.3ghz processor 6gb DDR3 1066mhz RAM 500gb 7200rpm HDD ATI HD 4650 1gb (Will this be enough?)
Asus Specs: Price $1,607.00 Intel P8700 2.53ghz 4gb DDR2 800mhz RAM Nvidia GTX 260M 1gb DDR3 vram(<----Reason im considering this computer) 320gb 7200rpm HDD
Anyway, which computer would be better for the price? Could I run EVE on max specs smoothly with the HP? Is the 4650 enough? Or will I have to step it up and go for the Asus. If anyone can recommend another computer thats more in the price range of the HP that would be great . And Happy Holidays!

I play on an 2.5 year old HP DV6000 laptop with 2gb ram and integrated videocard. I play with the graphics down and don't have a problem unless I run two clients.
I would imagine you would be fine with the HP.

Do the HP have 64 bit OS? cause only 64 bit will be able to handle more than 3 gb ram I like HP cause they are easy to restore if something goes bad
I would go for the HP for that reason and the fact that its 600$ cheaper and able to run eve just as good as the asus

It's 4gb of RAM that's the 32 bit maximum, actually. 64 for anything higher.

Minus the other stuff mapped on your memory addresses and 3GB is a more realistic approximation.
I doubt you run on max on that HP (why would you want that anyway?), and if you want to quickly restore a computer you make a backup, also if you restore using their software (Are we now talking about just reinstalling windows? I also got a HP and have no special backup stuff or something like that) you get all the crap installed again.
Downside of asus in general is pretty crappy battery times. In the end it depends on how much you want to spend, and other specs (like battery time, weight, etc). You can also consider Acer, while not really sturdy in general, they offer very good price/quality ratio and often good gpus.

Gah, not this again. That's just what's visible to the OS on certain screens. Yes, you'll never see it showing 4gb on those screens, but it's not a concrete figure for what applications can use. Windows swaps memory around a great deal, and yes you'll never use every last bit of 4gb, but people are better off just getting 4gb to best use a 32 bit system instead of stopping at 3gb.

For what is a Laptop at school used? Word? Excel? Matlab? Google?..
If it's for home.. get a desktop with a bigger screen and then some of those small new netbooks for school, they're lightweight too. I have no idea what I would need a laptop at school for.. really.
Computer class? They should provide computers there.. not?
Am I that far out here? Anyone got a hint for me?

I run with the lower-end AlienWare laptop. It is a fantastic machine, runs everything I need it to run, haven't had a single problem with it. Not particularly expensive either - AW used to be super-expensive machines only, but now they have machines in a far more reasonable price range. It's worth a hop over to their site to take a look around.

The 260M is going to do EVE quite well.
But I'm honestly not sure if it's worth the 50% increase in price
I'd just get a netbook and a proper desktop.

This TBH.
If you just need a laptop to take notes in class, check email, etc. just buy a $299 netbook and get a reasonably cheap off-the-shelf desktop to play EVE on. You can buy a cheap dual core machine with 4GB of RAM (really 3 for a 32bit OS) and something like an NVidia 8800GT and play EVE super smooth at max settings and 1900x1220.
You can EASILY afford both the desktop and the netbook for < $1600

Edited by: Chi''kote on 09/12/2009 19:13:51 I have a Toshiba Qosmio and love it. I can run 3 clients, usually with no lag. Price was between the asus and hp. Only problem is, like every toshiba I've ever had, it tends to get REALLY F'ing hot, and if you don't keep it cool, it will shut down. But then mine is used like a desktop and kept on almost all the time, so I keep a cooling mat underneath and a table top fan blowing on it (laptop air conditioning ).
I personally hate HP's, and probably would never buy one myself. Never had a good experience.
Also, if using wireless network, I like toshiba's again. I have a gateway laptop, toshiba, and lenovo. Of the 3, sitting in the same spot of the house, at times only the toshiba can connect. I even have an older piece of crap toshiba, and it can connect better than the new lenovo and gateway. toshiba's just seem to kick ass in the built in wireless feature. idk why.
Short version, I prefer to get better if I can afford better, so if you can afford it, Asus.
