Well many newbies tend to complain that the people on this forum are very rude and you'll only get flamed for asking a question?
But I saw a thread when a newbie, who had been ganked many times, got many many no-nonsense responses not a single troll or flame and this was on crime & punishment!
Why might that have happened? I think that may because the newbie didnt, cry, rage or whine and cleary was willing to learn?

It's usually down to the tone of the original posters comment.
Act like a baby, get ridiculed for being pathetic.

Edited by: Opportunity Costs on 09/12/2009 18:32:05 it is really hard to find willing and mature noobs on any game and EVE is not different.
there is the impatient, the egocentric, the paranoic, the solo-ftw, the turncoat, the 26-trials-a-year, the...
IMHO mature noobs are respected and valued. At least I do it. __________________________________ - Mining your own minerals doesnt drop your manufacturing costs! - Marginal earnings is what actually counts - Time is isk and enjoyment is isk aswell |

They are better-off in the new citizens area with legitimate questions. Here you have to expect some trolling in all cases and you need a flamesuit, if you come here with an attitude. Most people don't bother being rude to people who know how to behave. Even trolling is minimal(usually) when you just ask a question without ranting a wall about it.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 09/12/2009 18:37:02 It's not just tone but substance as well, in some cases. Something I've noticed is that the community does not react well to new players who bring their ideas about how to change the game to the forum, regardless of how well meaning or polite that new player might be. Frankly I'm glad though.
The Eve model of the MMO may not be the most unique thing in the world anymore (it's really the only game I play so I haven't been keeping up with what other MMO's are doing now) but it's harshness is what sets it apart from MMO's of the past and perhaps the present too. When a new player comes along, decides they don't like that model of play, and tells the forum what would be "better" (safer, easier, etc.) they're gonna get flamed for it.

This. The EVE community is rather protective of their game and don't like to see newbs trying to soften it. You ma call it a little elitist.
And yes, the New Citizen Forum is where even obvious and easy to find answers will not lead to flames. Other parts of the forum alre less forgiving. Seeing a newb walk into Market Discussions and evaporating in a fireball is quite a neat sight.

When you come to the forums you should: 1. Spend time and search for what is on your mind. 2. Repeat step 1 as many times as needed. 3. If steps 1 and 2 are turn up nothing, make a decent thread requesting assistance for what you are looking for.
Some people just don't want to look, others demand the information, and this leads to the flaming, usually. ---

Edited by: Zartanic on 09/12/2009 19:23:53 They should post on the noobies forum, no flaming there. Anyway it depends on the attitude of the player. If someone is put off by being flamed they should look at how they posted. If they behave like a petulant child (which is a common form of posting on other MMORPG forums but put down fast in EVE) then they will be treated as one. That's true of anyone not just noobies. If they ask questions in a reasonable manner they will be treated reasonably.
Good manners has nothing to do with game experience, some new and old players need to grasp that fact of life.
EVE has by far the most friendly and helpful community, ingame and out. But if someone comes in making demands they get told where to get off.

and wrong char
Hm, I think I might know a song about prepositions that could be of assistance.
Let's see, its something like "Conjuction Junction, what's your function?"
Wait, no, wrong song.
"Lolly, Lolly, Lolly get your adverbs here"
Nope, still wrong song.
"Interjections show excitement or emotion!"
Hmm, I could've sworn there was a song about prepositions. "Mr. Morton walked down the street, Mr. Morton walked." Hold on a sec, googling.
Found it:
Like a butterfly, or a like bee Like an ant, as busy as can be These little words we call the "busy P's" Prepositions
Nine or ten of them Do most all of the work Of, on, to, with, in, from By, for, at, over, across And many others do their jobs, Which is simply to connect Their noun or pronoun object To some other word in the sentence.
Busy p's, If you please. "On the top is where you are!" Top relates to where you are. "With a friend you'll travel far!" With a friend you'll go. "If you try you know that you can fly Over the rainbow!" Over the rainbow is where you can fly.
Busy prepositions, Always on the go. Like a bunch of busy bees, Floating pollen on the breeze. Buzzing over the meadows, Beyond the forest, Through the trees, In to the beehive. Busy, busy P's In, to, beyond, over, on, through!
Busy prepositions always out in front, On the edges, in the crack. 'Round the corner, from the back. In between the action. Stating clearly to your satisfaction, The location and direction. Prepositions give specific information.
Though little words they are, They never stand alone Gathering words behind them, You soon will see how they have grown Into a parade; a prepositional phrase. With a noun, or at least a pronoun, bringing up the rear. A little phrase of two or three or four or more words.
Prepositions! Attention! Forward, March! Busy prepositions, Always on the march. Like a horde of solider ants, Inching bravely forward on the slimmest chance That they might better their positions. Busy, busy prepositions. In the air, on the ground, everywhere.
The sun sank lower in the west. "In the west it sank." And it will rise in the morning, And will bring the light of day; We say the sun comes up in the east every day! "In the east it rises."
Busy prepositions, Busy, busy, busy! On the top is where you are! On the top. If you try you know that you can fly! Fly where? Over the rainbow. _________

well it is all in the eye of the beholder I have seen many players acused of crying, flaming or general wining in this forum when its clearly not the case what one man sees another may not.
If each time you only see the negative in some thing you'er in need of help as clearly you are heading for a nervous break down.

Not whining complaining or begging will get you far in EVE. I asked for sugestions after losing all my ISK and one of my ships for a good thing for a n00b like me to make money... All I asked for was KEYSTROKES and I got over 60 million ISK. :D Welcome to EVE. |

Lets just say there are some forum trolls that are consistently abusive and it is best to just ignore them. But honest questions do get answered.

Edited by: Taedrin on 09/12/2009 21:52:53 Welcome to EVE. If you treat others with kindness and respect, others will do the same to you. They will still mercilessly violate your ship and pod (and sometimes even your corpse - <3 the necrophiliacs out there) - but they won't be jerks about it so long as you treat them with respect and don't get upset over internet space ships.
EDIT: There are actually many, MANY examples of noobs who come to the forum, and ask a question honestly and earnestly. The vast majority of the replies following such a question were honest, sincere and respectful replies. ---------- There is always a choice. The choice might not be easy, nor simple, nor the options be what you desire - but, nevertheless, the choice is there to be made. |
