Hello to all,
I am completely new to Linux but am an advanced IT user with Windows.
I have completely no idea what I am doing in terms of making Eve work with WINE (one thought it might be easy).
I have followed the WINE guide on the sticky of this forum but this did not work for me. I have also followed a guide on how to install Eve on Ubuntu 9.10 on this forum by a member, but that was geared towards using 32-bit Kernel.
Could someone please give me an idiots guide on how to install and make Eve work on Ubuntu and WINE.
I am running a Samsung R710 laptop which worked wonders on Windows 7 with Eve.
I have a NVidia 9 series mobile graphics card.
The only thing I want or need to work on Ubuntu is my Eve install, please help before I die of withdrawal :(
I should also note that I am running a Core 2 duo with 64 bit Ubuntu.
I am happy to send any log files or diagnostics on request (you will have to tell me how to get them).

Edited by: Inegma on 14/12/2009 21:23:14 1. Install wine (program -> add/remove program, search for "wine")
2. Add the wine repository to the ubuntu update manager, you can find easy to understand instructions here: http://www.winehq.org/download/deb
3. Run the update manager (system -> administration -> update manager)
3. download winetricks at http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks i keep my file in my home directory, i cant remember my self installing it like the website says you can, i just run the sh command in terminal. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.
4. in terminal, type: sh winetricks winxp vcrun2005sp1 corefonts gecko d3dx9
5. To have a shortcut on your desktop, rightclick desktop and create launcher, chose a name (for example "eve") then use this command: wine explorer /desktop=EVE,1680x1050 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" Change the resolution depending on what resolution your using.
When you want to game, you probably will have to disable your network (sucky problem in 9.10), rightclick your network icon at the clock and chose disable (or whatever it's called in english, using swedish ubuntu), then start the game, as soon as the splash screen is gone you can activate the network again. Voila your fit for fight!
Hope this was of any help for ya. :)

You don't have to disable your network connection, look in this forum for a fix for that. (Ubuntu topics)

Inegma: You are supposed to add the repositories first, and then install wine. Your way he is downloading wine twice... Also stop being lazy and install the new kernel: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32/.
I don't understand how can you stand disconnecting everytime. |

Guys,
Now im foookked..
I agree that the having to disable networking annoyed me...
I installed the Kernel from the link you provided (using the deb package installer) and now my Ubuntu wont start with ANY accelerated graphics at all, its broke :(
On boot I get "Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module......" and asks me to start in low graphics mode.
I cannot seem to install any accelerated graphics drivers etc...
WTF can I do :( it all broke

Edited by: LoveableLoser on 17/12/2009 20:53:19 Rebuild your video drivers, you will be fine after that.
I think it's apt-get nvidia or something_190.run, just do what you did the first time
You'll need to do this for every major revision of your kernel

Dont really see the issue with installing wine that way, takes like a minute longer. Acctually installed the kernel later the same night i did the 2nd post, so no more dc for me. I blame to much work on my delayed kernel update. :P

You'll need to do this when you upgrade your kernel.
I didn't do this, and my comp works like a charm, guess i got lucky then. :P

Ok guys...
I have completely reinstalled my Ubuntu as it simply got ****ed after the Kernel update.
Could someone please talk me through the steps to successfully install that Kernel and allow the graphics drivers to be bound to it afterwards aswell?

Edited by: dracozna on 19/12/2009 10:15:06 This works for me everytime i install a new kernel
install new kernel like normal. Grub or lilo should automatically add the new kernel to the list.
install module-assistant = (sudo) apt-get install module-assistant reboot and load new kernel wait for the X-error messages to appear because the nvidia is incompatible and click them away login at terminal (ctrl-f1 or ctrl-f2) let module-assistant compile and install new nvidia-drivers = (sudo) m-a a-i nvidia (short version of module-assistant auto-install) restart gdm (sudo) /etc/init.d/gdm restart and have fun. tonight, we mine in Hek |

create 2 launchers on your desktop with one of these commands on each:
wine explorer /desktop=EVE1,1680x1050 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
wine explorer /desktop=EVE2,1680x1050 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
Change the resolution the one your using.

Whenever you install 3rd party drivers (from nvidia's website) you have to reinstall it after every kernel update unfortunately.

What I did to get my Samsung R710 (17" LCD, Nvidia 9600M, Core 2 Duo, Intel Centrion, 4gb ram, 320gb HD) to work with Ubuntu x64 and Eve was:
1.) Update your BIOS to the latest version (11SV at the moment of writing) under 32bit Vista, using (Windows-only) Samsung BIOS Update. 2.) Reboot, enter BIOS (F2), disable Advanced -> CPU Power Saving Mode. disable Advanced -> Legacy OS Boot set Advanced -> Large Disk Access Mode û Other disable Advanced -> EDB 3.) Reboot with F10 4.) Install Ubuntu 9.10 x64 Karmic Koala (from CDROM or DVDROM) 5.) Update all (from : System -> Adminstration -> Update Manager) 6.) Install newest Nvidia gfx drivers (190.53 is the latest stable version for x64 at the moment). 7.) Install Wine Beta (1.1.38 at the moment) 8.) Install Winetricks (sh winetricks winxp vcrun2005sp1 corefonts gecko d3dx9) 9.) Download EVE Online Offline Installer to the Downloads folder. 9a.) Install Eve Online using right click and choosing (Open with Wine...) 10.) When Eve is finished installing, uncheck the "Start Eve Online". Press Finish. 11.) Create launching script by pasting these commands in Terminal: cd Desktop gedit EVE1.sh 12.) Paste following script to the gedit text editor: #!/bin/sh # Disable BITS sed -i -e 's/bitsCancelled=1/bitsCancelled=0/' "/home/**************/.wine/dosdevices/c:/users/**************/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/prefs.ini" # Launch EVE Online wine explorer -- /desktop=EVE2,1280x768 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" 13.) Replace ************** with your username. 14.) Replace 1280x768 with your desired screen resolution. 15.) Save file. 14.) Enter following command into Terminal: chmod 777 EVE1.sh 15.) Run EVE Online by doubleclicking the script EVE1.sh (choose Run) 16.) Launch Eve Online. Change all of the gfx options that you want, then click Apply. When asked if you want to restart the client, press NO. 12.) Quit Eve. 13.) Launch Eve again. Everything should work now. 14.) If Eve gives flash screen and then nothing (like a blue screen), then you have followed some steps incorrectly. Follow everything to the letter!
You're welcome!

Edited by: 3QU17Y on 14/02/2010 14:28:22 It seems I rushed a bit.
After a restart, when starting EVE, it gives flash screen and then nothing.
To fix this: run: System -> System Monitor Kill exefile.exe
Find the prefs.ini file.
Modify: bitsCancelled=1 to bitsCancelled=0
Save file Change permissions to your user to Read only for this file.
Now you can start EVE.
Unfortunately, after every restart: - you have to run EVE once, - then it freezes, - then kill the exefile.exe process using system Monitor.
After that:
- start EVE again... and this time you can play for as long as you want.
Checked this "hack" with 5 restarts.
