You are going to be first (in a long list in years to come) developed country to take internet censorship! Finland was first to take "voluteer" one ..

Who wants to guess how many threads in the coming weeks/months we'll see asking about how to bypass the "GREAT FIREWALL OF CHI... AUSTRALIA!"? ---

very few. most people will just take the censorship and complain a little, but not do anything about it.
as long as sheep are fed and sheltered they can care less about anything else. |

I just hope they overstep on the censorship and block out legitimate news sites or something so that there is enough outrage to reverse the move. Before it is too late.

All one needs is an uncensored proxy (in another country) and you can bypass any and all filtering entirely. I'm not sure if the Aussie govmt really thought it thru well enough. Potential million(s) of dollars getting spent on a solution that can be bypassed with 5 minutes on google and changing Internet options. Not that I would ever suggest any Australians do so, nor how they could do it (Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections tab -> LAN Settings in IE or Tools -> Options -> Advanced tab -> Network in Firefox.) -------------

I'm Aussie, and as far as I can see the problem is manifold.
First, conservative elements in the legislative/executive arms of government have a disproportionate amount of power, and is a major weakness of the Federal system.
Second, your average citizen doesn't understand the faustian bargain that is censorship. Terms like 'freedom' & 'liberty' doesn't carry quite the same poignancy as it does in America.
Third, the Australian Government is (mostly) competent which lulls people into a false sense of security surrendering their liberties as well as privacy.
Fourth people don't realise how fragile the institutions that protect their freedoms are, nor how vulnerable they themselves become when those institutions fail them.
Fifth, Aussies are mostly middle-class nesters. We like a sense of security almost as much as our beer.
Finally Aussies have never had to fight for their freedoms (with some notable exceptions including woman & Aborigines), so those freedoms are not particularly valued.
I have faith the Aussie character will come through in the end and people will come to their senses...but I fear it's going to be a while yet.

I have to admit there's been a noticeable drop in the number of posts from Aussies whining about EVE downtime of late.
Maybe internet censorship is a good thing? Removed. Please keep your EVE signature related to your EVE persona and not that of a real life politician. Navigator |

'faith' is an appropriate word to use, since there is no evidence suggesting that this will be the case... unfortunately.
