This could all have been averted had CCP followed a well thought out QA process. I'm fairly sure it is this which gets people angry at them. 7 hours before an 11 hour DT is NOT long enough to thoroughly test for problems in a major client and/or code update.

as a software engineer I can tell you know matter how bulletproof of a QA process any MMO developer has: bugs will make it through. Period.
MMO software is some of the most complex, and least able to do coverage testing, in existance. This isn't like the ATM driving software I work on where we can have other software emulate all the ATMs we interface with, and we have lists of every transaction runable at each terminal type for us to cross check against with the physical terminals in our lab..
no, an MMO makes that piece of a software look like a child's learning toy in comparison.

Edited by: Denise Bloch on 18/12/2009 09:09:40 Directed at half the people in this thread, you know who you are...
1) If you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to pay for it. Quit. I'm sure CCP values your opinion and will be heartbroken as they break user records. Actually they don't really care, but I'm just amazed at how many people come on the forums and ***** about how ****ty eve is and then continue paying for it month after month. Thoughtfully addressing issues is one thing, but most people are just blindly yelling into the intertubes that "This sucks" and some poor guy named "Someone" should do a better job of bug testing so that "ccp doesn't release such crap".
2) It also amazes me that all of these people say this as though they can do a better job "Comon CCP how hard is it" "Why can't you keep your game up" "Whats wrong now, don't you test for these things" and etc. I doubt 1% of these people have written so much as a web page their entire lives. They (CCP) manage to keep millions of lines of code running 23/7 (most of the time), with thousands of players online interacting with it at once in one universe, god knows how many external applications reading from the API, plus forums and website that interact with the database. For all that goes on it is relatively bug free. Something happens though and suddenly it's "OMG WHY IS YOUR API DOWN! DON"T YOU KNOW HOW TO FIX THISE THINGS RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!"
Sorry, that turned into a large rant on my part. Again, if this thread makes you emo rage at me then it's probably directed at you. If you are capable of taking a step back and going yes, there are bugs to be addressed, but CCP is still doing a good enough job that they deserve my $15 a month, then this probably isn't directed at you.
Fin.
Edit for horrible grammar, I'm sure there is still a lot left.

And this justifies taking only seven hours to test the release build how? Any software engineer knows perfectly damn well that it usually takes days (if not weeks) to test an application to reach RC status. And once RC status is achieved, you don't add or modify ANYTHING significant in the codebase.
CCP did not do this. We didn't get a release, we got an unfinished beta.

considering your entire post is based on a number pulled out of your nether regions why do you think it deserves an intelligent response from someone who understands the issues involved?
PS: they do a lot more testin than that.. but on live they average between 20k and 40k simultaneously connected users every hour.
that's 20k to 40k manhours of "testing" every hour. every CCP employee could spend every moment of their lives - no sleep, no food, no bathroom breaks, etc - for the next decade and still not approach the number of man hours of testing than happens in live every single hour.

Can anything be said to allay these fears?
Please, SOMEONE buy this man a ticket to Iceland and take him to CCP's office... And show how huge Dominion patch was code wise...
Dominion had the biggest change in the whole game after original release, not surprised at all that we are seeing problems. Beta testing with fleet fights etc in couple days never gives you the same result as live production server. TQ has 50 000+ players at best nights, that's the real load. Not 300 players for few hours in certain date to test certain things.

All I was saying was that the game's pretty shaky at the moment. I don't deny that it was a massive undertaking, code-wise, but the end result is IMO less than desirable.

Fact is, eve is the largest attempt at massive paralleled computing for a game.
most applications for this sort of computing do not require near zero latency, they only require massive ammounts of internal bandwidth.
However, ccp has to deal with BOTH. I think it would be safe to say eve is paving new ground here, and you have to expect the roads to crack a little

Since when did 2 become 'numerous'. Seriously, there's always issues and is to be fully expected when code releases are this big and complex. Your arrogance is frustrating, insulting a game you do not appear to have thought about indepth. Eve is a very technical game and a lot goes on under the hood you don't even see to try and make a better game experience for all of us.
Either offer constructive criticisms with possible solutions or go play something else. While you may very well have the right to voice your opinions and feelings about a service, the same way CCP deserve a little more respect from the majority of the 'know-it-all' playerbase. Out of interest, what were you hoping to achieve with your original post besides the alienation of dedicated players?
