I got a gas harvesting mission from my command agent L4. I was surprised, and since I didn't have the skill trained I declined the mission, but it got me wondering how profitable gas harvesting is. I really have no idea. I'm not even clear on what gas is used for. I think booster production, but I thought it had to do with T3 production too...? Also, will gas ore (?) go in an orca ore hold?
Thanx

Clear up the easy answer first, I have no clue about gas in an Orca.
As to what gas is used for, the k-space gas is used for booster production and the w-space gas is used for T3 production.
With regards to profitability, the k-space gas is pretty much crap if you're not actually making the boosters, it sells for something like 3-10k ISK/unit I think (which is one 1m cycle for the T1 harvesters). The T3 gas was decently profitable last I looked (a month or two ago albeit), both because of greater demand and smaller size/unit. It was about on par with highsec mining I think when I was running 3 harvesters on an Exeq while doing homework.

A bunch of points, not necessarily connected:
- Gas cannot be stored in an Orca's ore hold.
- Gas Harvesters require a turret slot, thus you could use a Ferox but not a Drake as a Gas Harvesting ship.
- You definitely cannot use an Orca to harvest gas, but the Orca can provide cycle time and range bonuses to the ship that is doing the harvesting.
- The highest number of Gas Harvesters you can mount is 5, when you have Gas Harvesting 5 and a ship with at least 5 turret hardpoints.
- T3 production relies on gasses harvested in w-space only.
- w-space gas harvesting is profitable.
- hisec gas harvesting is not profitable compared to mining veldspar in system belts or running level 4 courier missions.

Thanks for that. Some additional questions.
Which clouds do damage? What size ship can withstand it? How much of a problem are the sleepers at a ladar site?

I live in a C2. No clouds here do damage. C2 sleepers are a joke. HAC or BC will do.

Out of interest, anyone know what class 5 or 6 WH sleepers are like at gas/asteroid sites?

C540 and C320 sites have 2x Advanced Sleeper BS.

No experience of sleepers, would they be soloable in, say, an Abaddon? Or could you take them with a HAC?

Class 5 and 6 Wh's are for gangs, not solo. You might be able to solo in a class 3 but that would be the extent of soloing.

If you use ECM heavily you can do with with a gang of 3 or 4. Without ECM you'll want 5-6 RR BS.

Yes, but I meant the two Advanced Sleeper BS at gas/asteroid sites, not other sites. Are these soloable? If so, would a hac or a bs be better?
Actually I guess I should go find out for myself on the test server... but it seems to be down

He's talking about the 2x Advanced Sleeper BS at the instrumental ladar sites. You can clear those with 1 t3 cruiser..

Ok, but what sleepers would you encounter in grav sites in 5/6 wormholes and what would you need to take them out?
Thanks...

The gas used for booster production can net you quite a good amount of money if you know the right buyer (and I do ). You can find the gas clouds in low and null sec COSMOS constellations. Personally, I have only found a handful in my entire Eve career but they are out there.

Reading between the lines here, I'm guessing I know the answer to the question I'm asking. It's a bit like asking "what's the best thing to buy in the LP store" ;). The reason I was asking though, is because it's quite an investment in time, effort and ISK to get setup in a 5/6 for a long mining op. I wouldn't want to arrive unprepared.

C5 top sites (grav/ladar) always spawn 2 BS and depending on type also a few frigs or cruisers.
I've seen all types of C5 grav/ladar sites been cleared by 1 T3 cruiser.

I have found that you can actually have 6 Gas cloud harvesters on your ship at once, with full skills and 6 turret hardpoints (at least according to EFT) I have yet to try this myself, but i believe you can, as I have been able to have 4 on my ship at level 3 gas harvesting. (IE, the gas cloud harvesting skill gives 1 extra harvester per level, with a starting limit of 1 at level 0)

You can put more gas cloud harvesters on your ship than you are actually able to use, i.e. if you have gas cloud harvesting 2, you can still put 3 harvesters on your ship, but when you go to activate the third one it will tell you you don't have the skill to do so. So you prob can fit 6 harvesters on a ship with 6 turret slots, but you still be able to use a max of 5.
