hi all.
i only just started playing eve yesterday so im a complete and utter newbie. When i told my mate that i started playing he told me that he's been playing for years and has over 3 billion isk so he's going to give me some.
So i have 300mil coming soon that i have no idea how to spend. Im very keen on buying a mining ship because i want to invest in something that will pay for itself and make me money in the long term.
Looking through the market i think a Hulk is the best way to go. After buying the ship i will have 112mil left and not a clue on what to deck the hulk out with.
Any suggestions?

What do i spend my remaining 112 mil on the fill the these slots?

You will not be able to fly the hulk for a long long time, like at least a month, not sure exactly. Save the money and use it when you need it. You will find a ship you like to do missions with or something and you will have the money to buy it. 300 mil is going to take you a long ways, just don't buy anything, buy stuff that you need.
By the time you are trained up for a hulk you should still have enough money to buy it, and the fittings aren't going to cost you that much, maybe 10 mil altogether. |

Yes.
If I were you I'd get a missioning BC (and possibly a BS) that you could train for quickly and then use the rest of it to get into PvP. ___________________

ya what he said, maybe the best route is to just get into missions for now, and find a corp quick to do stuff with, will make the game much more fun. You can still train up for a mining barge but understand it will be a while, might train for something first to have fun with sunch as flying battlecruisers, then work on the mining barge.

Edited by: Ir0n Prince on 23/12/2009 11:13:16 luckily enough i chose Gallente Miner path so i started with a good industry skills.
i think i will stick to training the Hulk skills and see what lesser ship i can use with those skills in the mean time whilst doing the Industry and Mining missions so i get experience before i get my baby.

Missions are the way to go atm. Sell your hulk and start grinding up to L4¦s. Run L4 with your friend so you can rise your standing fast. Then get into pvp of course

or!
Get into trading, start small, and get as much isk into the market at all times.
When you've built up your fortune, like, 5 billz, get a character that can do the things you want...Like, mining in a hulk. Beware, mining is BORING!
Also, if you want to be good at trading, you'll have to know a lot about the game, so that means spending a ****LOAD of time into the game, really.
Have fun : - ). There is a lot in EVE to explore!

I have a suggestion I think many will agree upon.
Don't accept the money.
EVE has the learning curve of a bottomless pit. You start at the bottom of it. To bypass the learning curve and you will waste your money and make unwise choices. So the best way to do this is to ask your friend for guidance, maybe join his corporation/alliance to learn if its based in empire space.
The learning curve is delicately cut out so only those who can tackle the challenge stick to the game. Which is how EVE retains a mature and skilled player base. Do not bypass.

This, when you ready to fly something properly you will find you ready to afford to buy it on you're own.
Don't listen to the people telling you to get a BC or a BS and jump into missions, it won't be long until you lose it because you will of missed out the part where you actually learn how to do tough missions, ie using frigs for lvl 1's and dessies/cruisers for lvl 2's.
Perhaps they best thing you're friend can do is buy you a set of +4 imps and the advanced learning skills and make sure you train these very early in game.
Join a corp which matches you're own playstyle and learn the game.

Edited by: Darcon Kylote on 23/12/2009 14:33:58 The fun and value in eve comes from building and looking back with some satisfaction in what you've built, be it skills, ships, fittings, a fat wallet, whatever.
If you get 300mil isk for free you will waste most of it making dumb mistakes (like buying a hulk you can't fly, and then when you can fly it, discovering you'd rather eat glass than mine).
You also miss a whole bunch of fun things, like trying to fit your tristan with that new module that you just can't quite afford yet, so you run a few missions, and you're way excited when you finally get it.
300mil isk will remove weeks, perhaps even month's worth of fun from your eve experience. -- Terminal Impact is recruiting PVPers for fun ops in lowsec/0.0/wormhole space. Visit our website or join ingame channel "the tict pub". |

AFAIK there is no "miner path" to choose any more. You don't start with any skills worth mentioning. Instead, you get 100% faster training time.

Excellent idea. You really haven't gotten the hang of EVE until a ship you love gets reduced to so many particles floating in space. You get angry, frustrated, think about quitting, but then keep playing anyway...happens to everyone eventually.
Don't let that first ship be a Hulk.

I can't stress the first three lines moar. The new player experience has been reworked into a rather excellent series of tutorials covering every major profession in eve. You get lots of skillbooks and ships along with moar than enough isk to buy anything reasonable that a new player would need. Then there is also the epic noob arc mission in Arnon at the sisters of eve station that will net you around 15 mil isk in rewards and bounties with anouther 10ish mil in salvage and loot plus some welcome standing gains with useful corps all across eve.
Originally by: Lenartowicz have fun spinning your hulk
He can't spin it until he can board it.
Edit: Also only get enough isk from your mate to buy a full set of +3 attribute implants as that is one of the few semi-exspensive things you can buy at the start with borrowed isk that isn't going to spoil your eve experiance. Tell him to set whats left of the 300 mil aside until you can effectively fly something that costs that much to buy and fit like your first battleship or pimped hulk.

Atm there are a lot of events like hulkageddon that focus on killing your hulk in hi sec. I guess you hulk could be dead as soon as you start flying into a belt wihtout the proper preparation :)

Do not buy a Procurer!
I'll repeat that for emphasis:
DO NOT BUY A PROCURER!
Procurers suck. The Osprey (Caldari mining cruiser) mines more ore/minute than a Procurer does.
Hulks take a lot of training. You need Mining V, Astrogeology V, Mining Barges V, and Exhumers III just to get in one. If I remember correctly, the Exhumers skill book is around 50 million all by itself.
I definitely recommend you do all the tutorials and see what you like. If you choose to go the mining route, get a Retriever and use that for a while. Don't buy the Hulk or the Exhumers skill book for a while. Wait until you've earned enough money to pay for them yourself. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Haha, I read this and had a flash back of my golem, saved money for a long time, sold my alts freighter and bought a golem took me hours to setup (being picky) then started my first mission and died (low sec and someone warped in and I did not notice). Great moment indeed.

The best route to take is the route thats best for you. So....if you want to go the mining route, then by all means go that way. If mining is what you enjoy, have fun.
I agree with any crowd that says don't buy a ship until you can fly a ship. You'll find you could use that money for other things instead of buying an 180mil ISK dust collector.
Go for a Retriever first. If you plan on mining in low sec, you might want to consider a Coveter before you go for a Hulk. If you are mining in high sec go for a Hulk but beware the growing suicide gank wave.
If you want to make ISK in this game as fast as possible, go for missions. It is by far the fastest ISK maker for noobs. Lv3 missions are ok for ISK, lvl 4 missions are BANK...but you need plenty of skills for lvl4s. If you are still flying lvl1 or lvl2 missions, go find an outpost to assault (Sanshas). If you get the whole zone to yourself, you can make 4+mil.
The best you could ever hope to mine in high sec is about equivalant to running Lvl3 missions.
Trade can make you a lot of ISK in the LONG run, but takes an exteme amount of active participation. Invention and manufactureing can make bank too but need dedicated toons to shine.
Or a couple other money making ideas: Ninja Looting (not a choice I take, but it's allowed and makes good money) Worm Hole diving, If your friend can take you to a Class 3 Worm hole (bring at least a BC, tanked to the hilt)you can bring home 100+ mil in a couple hours per person.
just some thoughts.

This.
Spending it on a huge, flashy ship is a) not going to help you most in the long run, b) likely to end spectacularly badly, and most importantly c) not fun.
Spend that starting injection you got on boring implants (you will have to get them eventually, and in this case sooner is better), and then work your way up the food chain of ships. Because it is more fun.
