I was going to joke about how Hornet II's have been the workhorse drones in 0.0 for years but then I remembered the EC-300.... And actually those caldari drones (light) against frigs are pretty awesome because: awesome speed, tracking, range dmg application (a lot of winmatar ships are weak to kinetic)
EWAR drones are nice, and every large ship should have a flight.
but there are literally no other good caldari drones. there are only 2 good options for damage drones in each size class - minmatar (PvP) and gallente (PvE). TEST Alliance BEST Alliance |

Like always it boils down to skills+ship+equipment+what your fighting = success in most cases.
Do you like to stand off and attack?
Do you like to get in close?
Do you like to be sneaky?
Do you like to EW them and nickle and dime them to death make them mad?
Review all the races and how they fight and then determine which race is best for you. All races get nurfed and crap. I call it flavor of the week. Since training takes forever your race can get nurfed hard, then when you keep training and got skills up and now you race is OP.
Open a 2nd account and train a different race.

Poor, poor Caldari. How can they ever compete... Best is relative. Also, you left out the part about anything not on this list being somewhere between 'mediocre' and 'garbage'
Stop whining and make your own list. |

Obviously you've never had a rack of medium blasters rammed up the wazooey? Just 'cause not everybody conforms to the whinematar/calamari doctrine doesn't mean those people don't PVP. CISPA - Readin' your secret corptheft mails since 2012 |

Poor, poor Caldari. How can they ever compete... Nope. Best T1 frigate: Incursus Best Battlecruiser: Brutix Best T3 Cruiser: Proteus Best EWAR: Welp, yeah, that is ECM. You don't pvp that much do you? -I mean outside of gate/station camping? To be fair, the Incursus is an absolute beast now, and isn't the point of EVE that no one ship is best in every situation, ie. A Brutix will murderify a Drake if gets in close, but at range its the other way around. Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

Incursus is a hell of a ship now? yes! So is Merlin now
Atron is the fastest frigate around? -probably yes but Caldary counterpart is not bad neither
And about Brutix murdify Drake well, I'm mainly trained Gallente and flow those for a very long time and can effectively say a gank Brutix vs Hams Drake Brutix will finish in space dust. Drake has already double EHP and HAM's are nothing to lol about when it comes to BC size. When next Drake chances come out, and IF those are the ones announced, expect Drake to become next FOTOM BC in every possible way (+5% ROF and missile speed means a +33% -/+ for EM-TH-EX dmg type and a +25% ROF with HAM's)
This doesn't mean Brutix has no chance in game vs Drake, all depends how skilled and experienced pilots in are, but chances the Drake pilots kills a few Brutixes before it dies are higher than the other way around for obvious reasons. Again, everything that doesn't involve gank static and defenceless industrials, gate or station camping, you're better off with caldari than Gallente.
Gallente has 1 Taloscane, that is everything you want but a gallente ship, it's more of a minmatar one with hybrids.
Caladari has Drake and Naga, the first being known and over known for being good at all you can do with, and the second being known as being the best sniper of all tier 3 BC's. (I think this is debatable vs Minmatar counter part)
Anyway whatever perception we can have about what Eve pvp is about or not, every race has good ships for a certain purpose except Gallente that are still stuck in station/gate camping and maybe certain WH's with bonus. But they also have excellent ships every fleet wants or likes, Recons and Interceptors mainly.
So at the end OP is not going wrong training Calamari but if he chooses Gallente he's not going wrong neither, he will just limit a little bit he's gaming possibilities until ships revamp is completed.

There are some good Caldari ships. A few off the top of my head:
Merlin Hookbill Manticore Blackbird Falcon Drake Tengu Rokh (underrated brick of death) Scorpion
The downsides of training Caldari:
Missile skills don't crosstrain the way gunnery skills do. Sharpshooter applies to three major weapon systems, while Warhead Upgrades applies to just missiles. This makes your training time when you jump to a new race that much longer.
Caldari also use hybrids (see Merlin and Rokh in that list) which means you'll need to double up on weapons training just to make use of all their ships. That's not as bad as it sounds, as hybrid training would at least prepare you for expanding to gallente ships more quickly.
Overall, the time to shift between Caldari and any other race is just longer than others. If you start with Minmatar with shield tanks, it's easy to switch to Caldari hybrid ships and then train for missiles to fill in. Amarr and Gallente are both armor tanking turret platforms that benefit from solid drone skills, and an armor Minmatar skillset can transition to either of them easily as well. Basically, you can expect to spend as much as an extra month making the switch, depending on your skill level. It's time to put an end to CCP's war on piracy. Fight your own battles and stop asking CCP to do it for you. |
