Or do we? At any rate Im getting quite tired of chatting up my male corpmates female avatars. It calls my masculinity into question you know
Anyway, Ive noticed that amongst my friends, I can get the non gaming girls to play anything as long as they can change their clothes / appearance.
Now, our avatars are a very small part of this game. To make it appeal to a greater number of women however I feel that great success can be had allowing ship skin customizations.
Principally this would allow at a minimum a recoloring of certain elements. Ala the two color scheme of homeworld.
I would appreciate a black throax, with gold trim. Or perhaps a bright pink thorax. With hot pink trim. The possibilities there are endless. Thing Homeworld 2.
Then, a set of decals that we can paint onto our ships at specific spots. ala nfsu. What pirate is going to be taken seriously without a priminent skull and crossbones somewhere on their ship???
Then, well, we already have ships with gund modelled on the outside. Ranges of accessory modules that do absolutely nothing, other than change the outline of the ship a bit. I want to strap neon lights to the underside of my thorax, put on bigger exhaust manifolds, perhaps a large rear spoiler.
When my thorax cruises past, other pilots will not have a doubts left as to the personality of its pilot!
Do it! for me. for the women. do it now!

Being able to paint my ship wouldn't make me want to play a game any more or less, and tbh I don't think that ship customisation is going to be a key factor in more women playing a game.
Sociability and using their brains, yes. Slapping some paint and being able to fly around in a pink Thorax (haha, god... ok no comment), no.

Nope. Pretty additions and the ability to customise how my equipment looks doesn't appeal to me personally tbh. My DAoC character has been running around in plain black armour and unmodded weapons for over a year. I'd rather have impressive abilities and be able to wtfpwn someone nicely than be able to make myself look good. ____ ♥ Wrangler & Valar fight over me! ♥ |

There are certainly exceptions to the rule. Well educated females who appreciate substance over style. And look hot to boot.
Sadly, women like yourself are in the minority. Most appear to have spent their formative years playing barbie. So, while not all women need ... clothing choices for their characters... a lot do.
And frankly, so do a lot of men. Even if they are too embarrased to admit it :P

I'm not so sure that playing with dolls as a kid has anything to do with it. Maybe it does. I dunno, I don't think I am qualified to discuss this as I had a BMX bike, played Voltron and used to throw stones at the girls.
That said, I think there are many more women out there who do appreciate substance over being able to make something look hot. But we also need to take into account the whole gaming culture. Traditionally men (boys, whatever) are the ³ber gamers, whereas women are more casual. A game like EVE lends itself to a mroe immersive playing style, and something which does almost require a huge amount of time to dedicate to it. If you look at games which are more casual in their style, you will find that most of them are single-player games. In the MMOG genre, however, you will have casual gamers leaning towards games which don't require huge login times and an insane amount of player immersion (off the top of my head: Sims Online).
Add onto all of this the fact that the casual gamer needs to be able to login and have FUN in the short amount of time they have to spare. This means that fast-actioned games and games with a higher level of social interraction will be more appealing. As opposed to a game like EVE where tactics, etc. are the highest requirements.
I think you'll find that this is probably why a lot of EVE players are not necessarily power gamers, but the kinds of people who can dedicate the time to it. And consequently, men. Not saying that women have less time to spare than men, but the mentality of men vs. women is such that a man will be happy logging into a game and achieving something - even if it is a minute goal, which carries him on his way to achieving a larger goal. Women would me more inclined to login, have that quick burst of fun and interaction and then be able to log off and say "that was great".

Plenty of women play EVE, it's just a lot of the time they don't tell you they're actually women, just for the reason you gave above.
And seriously, who wants to chat up some woman, who's very likely a bloke, on the other side of the planet, when you have absolutely no idea what they're really like, in a bleedin' game?
I just don't see how its relevant if they're a woman or not.

Depends on the larger goal...
But seriously... The pilot base reflects the society of pilots in the Eve universe. Interestingly Eve's future is such that society still puts men in higher and more well paid jobs than women.
The truth is that women are biologically adapted for child rearing whereas men are developed to do the hunting. Of course this does not make one better than the other at it, but our biology puts us in a place where men have a greater attraction to adventure. If you dont believe me then read some literature, boys go on adventure while girls wonder who they are settling down with (generally speaking) if you dont believe me compare the audience of two movies... Predator and Bridget Jones.
It is therefore hardly suprising that there are more men who fly as pilots (either real life or role play).
Disclaimer: Sorry if I am disturbing anyone... There are always exceptions and have met many people who differ from the description above. i am merely relating what is readily observable... not everyone may like it, but it is there.
I roleplay... there is this computer game called "Earth - The First Genesis" where i play a character in the early 21st century. |

Well, despite CCP's claims and whatever we may be trying to fool ourselves with, EVE is all about the aquisition of that next cool ship and/or uber-leet module. If there's a real-life equivlant, I'd say it'd be souping you car and dreaming about a new one.
Chicks that are into such things are, quite frankly, very few and far between.
The simple fact is that female gamers outnumber male gamers, so EVE's just not attracting female gamers. It's not that they don't exist in sufficient numbers.
