Hello there. I'm pretty new here, and as such I have run into what I am sure is a common "new player" problem.
I don't really know where to go from where I am. Currently I am a Minmitar in the Rens system with a Rupture and a Rifter, just past 1.6m SP, and about 60m ISK to my name (I won a trivia contest from someone who must be very rich). Currently I am training my learning skills (almost done!) and running level 2 missions to learn how to fly a combat ship.
I really have absolutely no idea where to go from here. I have read so much on the forums, Battle Clinic, EVElopedia, etc. that all the information is actually starting to make my problem WORSE. Thus I am open to advice.
I hate mining. Tried it and found it "boring", not "relaxing". I love to explore and have these dreams in the back of my head of running around in a stealth ship exploring 0.0 space... not that I know if that is even possible since I'm not sure what is necessary to detect stealthers. I also like running missions but I prefer them to be difficult; the ones I am running now are fine but they are a bit easy. I don't mind that for now because I don't feel like buying a new Rupture every day, but I would like to "graduate" some day.
I literally have no idea where to go from here. I'm not sure how to find the next "level" of missions or even what I would do if I found them. I am a long ways off from flying anything that can cloak and I don't think there is a solution to that problem except time. I wouldn't mind PvP but everything I have read about it makes it look so... confusing and hectic.
Have you ever played a traditional fantasy MMO where you get out of the newbie village and arrive at that first "real" town, only to complete the quests and not be given any "talk to this guy in this village to move on" quests (plot advancement tasks)? That's how I feel right now.
That... and totally overwhelmed by the amount of knowledge required to play this game.
I'm having fun! But I need a little push. Something along the lines of "Go to the end of that solar system, turn right at the asteroid belt, and get off on the exit just past the mining station."
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the sand box. It's big enough to qualify as a desert.
Since you want direction, I'm not going to waste time recommending an endless number of rather nice options
So your new objective in life is to be a mercenary Start by heading over to crime and punishment, look for a corp that you think is effective. Then track down their recruiters and try to join and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Actually that sounds like quite a bit of fun. I was just thinking that it would be interesting to be a "gun for hire", protecting mining operations or acting as a hired assassin.
I'll check out that forum board you mentioned. Thanks!

Here's more direction for you (PVProute):
1. Sign up for Agony Unleashed's PVP courses (optional) 2. Learn basics of PVP. 3. Join RVB 4. Gain experience at PVP 5. ??? 6. Profit
Once you try your hand at combat PVP, then you can decide if you enjoy it. From there you can then decide which kind of PVP you like and head in that direction. 60mil should be more than enough to fund any new ships/skillbooks/modules you need to buy, just remember to keep it cheap at the start (~1mil for frigate fitted and optionally rigged, ~7-10mil per cruiser) and never forget to insure!

It's not as interesting as it sounds, mostly involves sitting outside a station

When I'm done with learning skills I am going to train up tank and gank Minmitar style (Projectiles and Armor) then get some basic tackling skills. I figure that I could be useful by the end of the month, then go get some PvP done. I know it's not a perfect setup, but I figure that I at least have some fun in the Rifter while using the Rupture to hisec mission to support the habit.
I'm still looking though the C&P forum board. Seems to be a lot of whining there about "Real Piracy" being dead, or something of the sort...

It's cool you have a plan and all, but take care not to wait too long before you try it. A lot of new players fall into the trap of "Waiting till I have enough SP/ISK/Experience/friends before I try PVP". The best time to try it is basically as soon as you can. What that means is having enough isk to replace your losses, which for a beginner should be fairly minimal. If you have enough to buy a stack of t1 frigates and t1 fittings, say 5-10 or so, you should already be good to go. This advice might seem a bit doss now, but you'll see what I mean about knowledge and experience > SP after you've tried it. The only thing cautionary advice I will give you is this: Be careful about your sec status as a new player. If you get it too low too quickly without knowing how to survive w/o hisec access, you might find youself playing on hard mode and get frustrated. Try not to pod or aggress pods if engaging in lowsec (wartargets are fine although RVB discourages it I hear).
If you can stick with a longterm, learning skills plan, then more power to you. Mixing in a couple of useful skills like tackling and stuff doesn't take long and allows you to do stuff sooner instead of spinning your rookieship in the station waiting for learning skills. Otherwise you might bore yourself or burn out. Once you train level 1 in related skills, you can pretty much do what you want to do. Higher levels in those skills just means you do that stuff more effectively.
A word of warning about the forums here: INTERNET SPACESHIP FORUMS, DEY IZ SRS BZNS!! The forums are the worst kind of indicator for anything, since only a very small but very vocal minority post there, although more do read it. Make up your own mind on matters based on your experience instead of relying on other people's posts (which are mostly rehashes of what's been said before anyway) to give you a stand on a subject, like so many do. Most of the posters tend to be trolls and idiots anyway, so don't take anything you read at face value (forums are PVP too! )
edit: forums ate my reply

Yeah, I've played enough of other MMOs to know that forums -- official forums in particular -- can be pretty awful. Warhammer's were just terrible, WoW's are filled with the Earth's lowest common denominator, and FFXI's contain the biggest drama queens this side of the galaxy.

are you Chribba's son?
if you want to work as a mercenary, there are plenty of corporations out there. They mostly do arrangements with carebear corporations that are wardeced by griefers.
also work for big alliances sometimes.

Good advice here, Eve is set-up as a PVP game, most of the effort has gone into making the combat side of things the most rewarding, exciting, thrilling part of the game. DonÆt miss out on party because you think you are not ready. As soon as you can fit and fly a frig you are ready. My personal experience would point you at RVB as you sound like an idea recruit but all the other options mentioned will also be great choices û good luck, in a few weeks time youÆll be hooked!

Ironically enough, a focus on learning skills may be holding you back from enjoying the game. Learning skills are good to have in the long run of your EvE career, but they're taking up time that could be better spent on basic and necessary skills now.
Don't spend the time getting all your learning skills to five now. Go train the skills you need first. Most of the basic skills you need in the beginning don't take that long anyways. ___________________________________ "In the land of predators, the lion does not fear the jackal." -Dexter |

This is genuine advice here for any noob remotely interested in PvP.
1. Move your ships to Tourier III and join R-v-B channel 2. Apply to join Red Federation - instant no question asked acceptance 3. Insure your Rifter for Platinum insurance, replace any expensive mods with cheap T1 stuff. 4. Open Fleet Finder, click find fleets and join the Red Corp Fleet that appears. 5. Undock and join your fleet mates. 6. About 10 minutes later you will have made your first kill. 7. You will probably lose your Rifter in the same battle, pod run back to HQ, accept the insurance payment and get a new Rifter. 8. Goto 3.
Red Federation is currently accepting applications from new players in it's war with Blue Republic. The main rule to remember is we don't pod kill.
There is no minimum time period you can join for, spend just a few hours or weeks, move on when you are ready.

Happily you get all of those elements combined in one forum, the EVE-O forums \o/ Not that it's a bad thing, they provide lulz and entertainment when they going's slow

I recommend RvB for anybody.
- People who want to PvP - People who are afraid to PvP. RvB is cheap, so there is very little risk. - People who have 0.0ed for years. - People who are coming off of doing tutorials. - People with no direction.
About the only folks I wouldn't recommend RvB to is those who are KOS in Gallente space. And damn, please think about using something other than a Rifter.

Browse the recruitment forums, and apply for a corporation that sounds interesting. Eve is hard to play and enjoy as a solo game. It's all about social interactions and getting to know people, and doing activities with people.
There's several flavors of corporations. Join one and get involved.
There's empire PVP corps (for example, RvB) There's 0.0 PvP corps that are part of big alliances that battle over territory There's small-medium mining corporations. There's corporations that hang out in wormhole space There's lowsec piracy corps etc
There's lots to do in Eve. You say you don't mind missions. Well, you could stay in Rens/Frarn area and work towards the level 3/level 4 missions while you develop some wealth, train skills, and work towards battlecruisers/battleship type ships.
You could play on-your-toes and go into lowsec space and try your hand at exploration.
Biggest advice: get involved, socially.

Lots of good advice here; thanks to everyone who took the time to reply.
The RvB stuff sounds pretty interesting, I must admit, though I will probably be stuck flying a Rifter or Rupture for now because that is where my skills lie. I understand that these are popular ships, but I honestly stumbled into them because -- not knowing anything at all about the game when I created this character a year ago (and then promptly had to stop playing because of RL) -- I picked a Minmitar because they sounded "cool" to me as a race.
This week is going to be really busy for me, so I'm taking the time to finish off the learning skills to 4/4 so I don't have to worry about them anymore. After that I'm going to focus on Gunnery and tackling in hopes of being a decent tackler/DPS when I go to PvP.
I really like the thought of being a Merc. It sounds like a great way to make friends... and enemies.

Ok, I think I'm an idiot, but I just can't seem to figure this out: how does one join RvB? Is it just FW? I find no immediate signposts towards it on corp search...
Sorry for the real stupid question but...help?

As stated multiple times, come join RvB! I'm a new EVE player myself. Infact, i got even less SP than you, sitting on around a mil; And i signed up with Red Federation yesterday. By tonight, i should get my first taste of PvP. That could be you!
