Hi all.
I'm working on an (open-source) pre-rendered 3d version of our beloved influence map, with several twists.
Being geared towards eye-candy, my final output will probably be very clobbered with 3d effects representing major events and statistics, thus all this will be far less useful than Paladin/Verite Rendition's one (that map is just too good and I never planned to replace it feature-wise).
Here are partial results (as far as now it's only stars/jumps topology but it starts to look solid).
Idea: Think of a last generation fancy weather report/forecast (those with plenty of CGI). Now remove the speaking hot chick and replace weather events with sov. changes, major fleet battles... The idea is to create specific graphics for such info and zoom around to show where stuff happen, perhaps with an HUD with details about what's displayed.
It's made in Blender, and basically everything is python-driven (DB is PostgreSQL, but with not much work it can be ported to other RDBMSs). Probably it can be made interactive with little work, but i'm not good enough with Blender's game engine.

Turns around a bit too much but otherwise I think people would use what you described to catch up with events. Also it looks cool. Ever thought about making it a standalone map application with a route planning and realtime API import? I'd definitely use that. I'd help but my python skills are rudimentary at best...

My eyes just melted with the pretty...
That is beautiful... visually stunning, technically impressive, and from what you say that's just the start of what you're planning. I wait with bated breath for the next stage! ---------- EVE Markets - global price trends at your fingertips |

It depends on what do you mean: if you want just the video, YouTube is streaming the video through an SWF (plenty of tools out there to rip FLV h264 streams from YT).
If you want interactive/flyable map (as an SWF app), it's not the format I'm using, and it may be very difficult to get it right.
The script itself generates a Blender file, probably there is some script to export Blender object hierarchy to SWF code, but you'll have to find it for yourself.
Personally I don't think it's worth the effort: once done, you'll be stuck with flash render engine, which probably lacks most of the stuff needed to get close to original look.

Well basicly I wanted each region rendered in a swf file (similar to a killboard i saw a while back) or aven (if posible, entire universe. I wanted to use that on my website ...
