For a couple weeks I've been interested in the idea of playing some new games with my girlfriend. Sadly, she's not interested in Eve. She does play Lotro though.
I couldn't get into Lotro. I am not big on the idea of a fixed game environment which follows a path leading to ultimately the demise of the game. We experimented around and checked out a few free to play MMOs. A couple held my interest but once I dug into a particular game (Runes of Magic) and started complaining about lag in their forums. After they locked, deleted and condescended to me in their threads, I complained and it ended up with me being warned. I decided that they were just milking the cash cow and didn't care about their customers. Apparently lag is 100% the problem of the client. Who would have thought.
A few days ago, my Eve account was disabled for some unknown reason. Fortunately today it is back online (thank you friends! You know who you are.) A couple days ago I delved into the new beta of Allods Online. It was interesting until about level 5 (or, 30 minutes of gameplay) when I read their forums and learned that you hit something called "fatigue" that causes your character to no longer gain experience during normal gameplay. Upset, I quickly dropped that game, beta or not. I tried out Star Trek Online, to see what that was all about. Yay, phasers and photon torpedoes! Fun! But then the gameplay drew linear and tiresome, as well as unfun due to lack of multiplayer gaming. Considering I had originally envisioned STO being players who all operate on a single ship (as a "guild") and then finding that as a crewman rank I could run my own ship I was kind of disappointed.
One thing led to another. I downloaded some game called Lost Saga, and when I ran the game it wasn't even in English. I posted in their forums and they said "install East Asian language packs." I said "I already told you I have Vista, and it comes with it pre-installed" and left. I looked all over for something to satiate my desire for something new. What would it be? I was tired of games which you had to launch through a browser window. I was upset that games all used default windows fonts for their UI. I was frustrated with the lack of transparency and general disdain for players from other game publsihers. I was tired.
Well, today my Eve account was fixed and I was able to log in and play again. Let me tell you that flying out of nosec where I was last online was just another grind. I thought "blah, Eve," but then something happened. I docked at my lowsec home and then looked through my varied ship assortment. I perused my skills, thinking how much energy and effort I dumped into the many level 5 skills I worked hard for. After looking over my character sheet, I smiled and activated my Ashimmu, then undocked.
Something happened.
I don't know if it was the glow of the star reflecting off the hull, or the smooth, curvaceous lines of its fuselage but something clicked inside of me. A smile crept across my face and I locked up a corpmate and fired a volley of Dark Blood Multifrequency at him which caught him totally off guard. My smile widened and I said to him in Vent, "man, is it good to be back."
I am so happy to be a part of this community. Some of the most intelligent people on the planet play this game and I am happy to share this universe with you all. I hope that nothing ever comes along to threaten my loyalty to this game and the company that makes it.
To the community, developers and friends I have here, I love you guys. I always have and I always will.
I'd just like to wish everybody here the best in the upcoming years in any endeavors you may have. I hope that you are blessed and enjoy your time in whatever you do.

Great post Siigari. And same to you. The really defining point of EVE is that its what you make it.

Great post. I too know the feeling. After taking many breaks, to try to enjoy other games, nothing held my interest more than Eve. Even with all the faults, all the quirky UI, and all the time I spend screaming at my monitor, nothing comes close to the core gameplay. ________

Edited by: Morkalum Takor on 26/01/2010 11:58:22 I know the feeling. I started back in Beta of '03 and have been off and on subbing Eve throughout the years, but I keep coming back. The last time I had left, I was really getting into the game, but then I met my wife-to-be and decided to leave for while so there wouldn't be distraction as I was courting her(Yes, people still court! ). Now that I am married, I felt it was time to come back.
Hehe, hopefully this time, I stick around longer.
I've met some great pilots, corporations, and alliances throughout my time here. I am big on sci-fi as I believe that's where our future will eventually lead to and playing EVE slightly gives us a glimpse of what can be. So it's great to be here playing with you all.
See you all out in space!

WHAAAAA!!!!
You must have come back to some weird EVE Online belonging to some bizarre parallel universe. In this universe, the dumb, the jaded, and the angry kids who forgot to take their ritalin when their mommy told them too . . . rule the universe.
But I am with you on the fact I seem to love this game too. Kiss <3

I think I may have also just disproved this. --------- War isn't the answer. However, the objective isn't to provide answers rather than eliminate the question. |

Hmm so STO sucks, oh well, I was thinking of trying it but if it sucks I'll stay here.
Can't really afford another game anyway :)
