Edited by: Thrymren on 27/01/2010 18:39:26 yepp! i have the same Problem - ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB GDDR5
Starting eve - Chrash/system Lockup - general bull****.
you can switchoff the Recover function... only will result in your system crashing completely.
what i do to work around this? i found out that my card works nice when it is heated up a little... for instance by using the overdrive function, or running another game, or try a stresstest before starting eve.
only works for me, so i don't know if this helps you, but whatever it does - please report!

Thrymren, I think you're right about the heat thing. I've overclocked the cards core memory by 15% and increased the voltage to it by 0.1v via bios, seems to be more stable.

this is totally crazy... i mean really why the hell does a videocard not work when cooled to good? xD
When i got home yesterday and switched on the pc it booted right up without a problem... when windows (7) was done loading i started eve= videocrash, flickering, swithcing on and off... the old game! so after restart i tried agan... same effect. then i restarted and overclocked the card, got it up from standard 42¦ to 54¦ (celsius) and what happens? eve starts normally and the client runs rock stable.
@CCP: is there a way to get old eve versions to run on my pc as some sort of testserver or something? i'd love to try the same with empyrian age/quantum rise and Appocrythingy ^^ i think the Bug first appeared during apothingy release, but got more intense with dominion deployment.
i'll definitely investigate this further tonight... this is freaking me out! :D
best regards T.
PS: This strangely only happens with EvE so far... i got no friggin idea why!

Edited by: Thrymren on 29/01/2010 19:50:55 Sooo let's see...
I have tested a little more and i think i narrowed down the Problem, but i'm not shure.
The client constantly crashes on me now, so that is kind of the perfect test scenario. :(
Fullscreen is a total *****, intervall settings seem to have some kind of effect... but don't resolve the isse. i'm trying to test in windowed mode mainly.
What i did recognize is that the Problem seems to be mainly while starting, either in the Menu OR right after loggin in to Station!
I installed GPU observer for windows7 and put it to never hide and noticed something interesting during the constant on and off switching of my monitor: ATI does have different clock settings. When there is no 3d rendering the CCC clocks down the card (in my case from 870Mhz to 500Mhz) This is for energy saving issues, and i totally accept that... however i can't accept what i witness here! Eve does not trigger the ATI CCC as a 3d Application (lol) obviously Eve is not recognized. The ATI drivers don't clock the GPU up and my guess is that this is the reason for the crashes!
sollution? none yet! i'd love to have a dev. post a word in here about the implementation of ATI Graphic Drivers and Eve... Question is simple: is it the fault of ATI or the fault of CCP? now before you jump to conclusions remember that this issue only appeares with eve so far! ;)
best regards T.

UPDATE ON VPU RECOVER
Thrymren the the reason your card in not running at full speed is because you have been running Eve in windowed mode. CCC only clocks card to full speed when the (any) game is run in Fullscreen 3D mode. That said I have found a fix for my vpu problem: I disabled 4 startup entries via spybot S&D Narrator.exe (2 instances, though dont think these were a problem)
Updreg.exe ISUSPM.exe issch.exe
the 2 last entries are for the installshield update manager and I think there was a graphics conflict of some sort between the card trying to show a desktop "page" over the fullscreen 3D application. It sorted it for me, hope it helps someone else. (XP system FYI)

Card memory tho is 512 GDDR. Hope this helps
