It seems some of us are forgetting something:
PLEX's cost nothing for CCP to make. Nothing. It's purely intellectual property. Therefore, they cannot possibly be scamming us since we are not donating real cash.
So by donating, we're giving nothing of monetary value to CCP, and out of their own generosity are converting that into real cash donations.
And I agree with the above; a lot of people are in a better financial situation in EVE than in RL, and so are more able to donate via ISK means than through real dollars. CCP are then doing the rest.
A brilliant idea if you ask me.

Glad someone posted this on the general board as it was listed in the info space.
I donated last night and was glad I could since I can't afford a cash donation at this time. Great idea from CCP.

I think your post is stupid, even if I appreciate your sentiment.
You get 2 x PLEX per GTC exchanged. The GTC has a very real price attached to it. The PLEX is a token derived from a GTC (which like a GTC) which you can exchange for a normally paid-for service from CCP. Every PLEX donated back to CCP for Haiti has a monetary value, both in general and for CCP in particular.
When you're donating a PLEX to CCP you donate something with monetary value because at some point someone - a customer - has paid CCP for that PLEX. If the PLEX goes to CCP for Haiti then it isn't being applied to an account and that account then isn't drawing on CCP resources. This frees up revenue CCP has gathered from customers which they then (presumably) distribute to the Red Cross who will then (presumably) distribute it to the needy in Haiti.
I do agree that it provides a useful niche service to those who are in a better financial position in EVE than in RL to donate during the crisis, but that is all it is - a niche service.

An exercise in social engineering on ccp's part.
Giving for me has allways been about making sacrifice, ccp could have just donated the money they have allready taken on the timecodes for the haitian appeal.
It'd be different if people were putting their hands in their pockets to buy a extra code.
Im sorry but this is just a self serving exercise all round. While i will appauld ccp for giving the money to the appeal, the manner in which they are doing this i find distasteful.
People are patting themselfs on the back for doing absolutley nothing.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. Some may also look at this exercise and see it as a group of people around the world who share a passion and co-exist in the same virtual world. These people have the opportunity to make a difference to others who have lost everything.
The response from players already has been outstanding and the service offered by Chribba allows those who cannot afford a full PLEX to donate what they can and the accumulated effort will result in even more PLEX and more money for the people of Haiti.
I suppose, like everything, how each of us view an event is a matter of perspective

You know, five years ago when the world was shocked by the tsunami, CCP made a more traditional kind of collection drive where they collected RL currency from the player base and matched it with their own donations.
I find what they are doing now very similar, except the plex approach opens up for more people to participate. If you think donating isk is worth nothing, I suggest you contract all your belongings to Chribba. The isk he earns from selling your "worthless" belongings may pay for food and shelter for a few Haitians for a couple of days, depending on how rich you are of course.

While my opening statement might have been a little bit harsh, i stand by what i said.
It's my opinion.
I realy don't see how people are doing anything themselfs by donating ingame items that have no value outside of it.
I understand what ccp navigator is saying though (more people buying codes for $'s), so if it is making a difference, then good on them.
Myself, iv'e made numerious sponsorship pledges, and shoved a fair few quid in boxes for the poor unfortunate people in haiti.
Ohh and i bought a couple of loafs or bread today to feed the birds and ducks at the lake today on my walk back from the supermarket. Made me feel good about myself

Personally this whole sudden charade for collecting money all over the world whenever a natural disaster kinda sickens me simply because it shows what a bunch of hypocrites people around the world truly are. 24/7, 365 days a year there is so much **** going on all over the world where people suffer immensely. Then a natural disaster strikes and suddenly cries and pleas for help appear and the media all over simply explode. It is kinda amusing really: the pleas that play on people's conciousness is sickening enough in itself, but then there is the ones that actually do decide to pay - all in order to satisfy that little feeling of guilt. Donate a buck or so and all the troubles disappear. One month later, the very event is a mere memory if even that and most of the people that suffered from said event most likely still suffer.
It's the exact same thing with that Earth Hour crap where once a year people around the world are fooled into joining in and turn off all electrical appliances and lights and whatnot else for one hour. "Show that you care about the environment" and all that BS.
Do it right or don't do anything at all, but at least be honest about where you stand instead of being a hypocrite. There is no middle road. That's my take on all of this.

Two points.
1: A hypocrite is one who acts out without truly believing in what he or she claims. Amount of effort is irrelevant to one's intentions, which leads us to point two:
2: You seem to be a fan of "all or nothing," In which case, the majority of the world would choose to do nothing, since dedicating oneself 100% to any cause is a daunting task. You're honestly going to tell me that it would be better if no one donated during these natural disasters?
Also, since you are a qualified saint, I'm glad to hear you donate 100% of your disposable income to the less fortunate.

You sound quite dim then. Let me explain. Someone buys a GTC and exchanges this into 2x plex (GTC costs $30, so each plex = $15). Now i mine enough each month to buy 2x plex per month which i use to run my account. This month 1 of those plex i donate to Haiti (as i dont have RL cash spare, hence why i mine and buy plex to play this game). Now whilst i dont have $15 RL cash to give to Haiti, buy playing a game and doing what i wanted anyway i am able to give 1x plex which equates to $15 (as someone else paid for this via GTC) and as such i have donated via CCP this amount. So in essence through CCP i have just done what you are so proud of ... i have shoved a few quid over to the poor Haitians.

News shall be spread to you: Feeding birds and ducks with loafs or bread indeed harms those beings! If you want to help the ducks and birds, reduce the amount of energy you use, plant a tree and reduce your fresh water needs.
Also, the way the plex-donation for haiti isn't really a player donation, it IS a CCP donation. You activate an ingame trigger (donate plex) and CCP spends ~14$ to haiti. How cool is that?!
Go spend iskies, go donate plexes, go chribba, GO CCP!

As my ISK now appears to have the ability to buy real life aid am I obliged to declare it to the tax man?

I anticipated that someone would play the "Saint" card on me. It's almost too predictable in fact
But no, I am no saint. I belong in the other category. I live my life, deal with my own problems and don't really care about the problems that goes around the world. I don't have the mental strength to care for every single individual person that is alive or for every problem that the world has. That job is left for a true saint. But at least I know where I belong. Most people don't and are instead content in patting their own backs every now and then in an attempt to show that they care. That is what is so pathetic.

lol I would not mention it to the taxman. Governments are already rubbing their fat grubby fingers together at the prospect of taxing MMO currency... best not to give them any ideas! Removed.
