Looking for a cheap laptop to run a second Eve client on. I am based in the uk and don't want to spend a fortune - four hundred pounds is my top limit. Anyone recommend a good laptop?

If you don't mind going a little over the 400 pound mark there are these ones:
ebuyer's Compaq Presario CQ61 - ú423.46 [link] ebuyer's Acer Aspire 5538 - ú449.47 [link] Novatech's X16HD - ú439.98 [link]
Any of those will easily work with the game. |

Any late model laptop will run Eve fine, though I can't promise high graphic details. My old Compaq piece of ****e with 512 Mb RAM and some integrated GeForce 6100 mobile gpu piece of ****e runs Eve pretty smoothly most of the time with the lowest graphics settings. And this is on Vista, so I imagine it'll be smoother on XP or 7.

I bought my Acer T3200 from ebuyer for a little over ú400 and it runs EVE pretty well, it's well worth having a look at the options on this site and sign up for the bargains email, they send one out every couple of weeks. http://www.ebuyer.com/

While I understand you were just trying to make a witty reply, this isn't the case at all or else I wouldn't be playing eve.
I'm playing Eve on a 4 year old HP labtop with an Nvidea graphics card of some type, it cost me a whole $800 at best buy. While it can not handle eve with shadows enabled, a newer labtop just might. Either way if I can dual account with little problems (except large fleet battles that is one account only) a newer labtop should do just fine.

Rule number 1 about Eve Forums.
Expect useless and witty replies.
From my experience, any advice should come from corp members as these forums are stacked with the so called "trolls"
This thread is an execption to the rule BTW.

Ohhh so the ions can handle real 3d graphics? Might have to think about a picking up a cheap one then. *runs off to do some research*

Currently EVE is playable (barely) on my nearly three year old laptop with the following specs:
Dell Latitude D620 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66 GHz RAM: 2 GM DDR2 in Dual Channel Vid: Intel Integrated GMA950
Mind you I have to rotate my camera away from stations if I'm undocking someplace busy to keep the system responsive enough to actually warp someplace else. I also have to zoom out somewhat to prevent turret effects (which I insist on running) from faceplanting my frame rate. Missions are miserably slow so I don't bother with them and I keep the station enviroment turned off so I can get around hangars more smoothly. Sound is completely disabled and all settings are at their lowest (make sure you set the advanced stuff and lower the colour depth to 16-bit everywhere which leads to artifacting but much faster performance)
Playable...yeah...responsive it's not. I have fiddled a little with another laptop that's running an Intel 4500MHD and it handled the client lots better.
So while an inexpensive laptop will not deliver a glassy smooth experience, anything modern will likely make EVE playable. That is until CCP "upgrades" the graphics for no reasonable cause and then ends support for the existing client.

I picked up an Acer Aspire 5536 around halloween on sale for $449.
specs amd dual core 2.1 ghz / 4 gig ram / ati hd 3200 1 gig video (256mb dedicated/1gig shared) Windows 7, hdmi out, etc
runs eve at 70-80 fps on low even with many people around which is fine for me
was on sale for $449 when I got it, normal price is 549 but I'm loving it, plays many games and for the price at the time I couldn't beat it. I've been stuck in a motel due to a house fire at end of december so was glad I got this laptop :) left4dead 2 at 80-90 fps, and the acer 5536 has a full keyboard with numpad, so it's nice and easy to type on

You should try something with an integrated Intel chipset, if you want it to be very cheap.
However, if you also want a good experience playing, I'd recommend someting not too expensive with an NVidia or Ati graphics card.
For example, my Fujitsu Amilo Pi 3560 cost around 400 pounds (if I calculate from my native currency), it has a GeForce GT 240M, and it runs EVE totally awsomely with every settings on max.
If you'd like to spend a little less money, try someting older with NVidia 7000 or 8000 series card. (And you can get those even cheaper if you buy it used from Ebay or something like that.)

Ill say it again, do not purchase ANYTHING except for the new ATI 5000 seriues mobility GPUs coming out shortly. If you plan opn playing games on this laptop, this is your only viable option. were looking at a 300% minimum improvement over the best mbile GPUs out to date. There will be a slew of options with the 5000 series line, everything from cheap to a mobile 5870. Coming from a Hardware Analyst perspective, there is no other viable mobile graphics platform I would consider at the moment. Integrated graphics? Are you serious?

Nip down to your local John Lewis, they have some Toshibas and Compaqs that fit your spec. If you are lucky they may have an special offer that will give you a lot of bang for your quids. John Lewis are never undersold so all it takes is for someone in the vicinity to put a laptop on special offer and they will follow.
I have nabbed several bargains that way.

Depends on what you mean by "run a second EVE client on". I picked up a laptop from 2005 for $200 on eBay that runs EVE "fine" in the sense that I can run a scout alt, market alt, hauler alt, etc. I've run some missions in it, and even tackled once or twice. I don't think I could get used to using the laptop as my main EVE access point but if'n you just want something that lets you fiddle with your skills on the go or other simple tasks like that I see no reason to spend a lot for a gaming laptop.

Dell Inspiron 13Z - 1.3Ghz CULV dual core / 4GB ram / 512MB Nvidia 105M graphics.
Plays Eve superbly. 60FPS+ at mid settings and around 30FPS at all high settings. My previous laptop 2.4Ghz single core / 2GB ram / ATI 200M graphics would give me 8FPS at lowest if I was lucky.
As mentioned any laptop from the past three years will play Eve CPU wise but you do need a dedicated graphics chip for it to be enjoyable/ really usuable.
Essentially avoid the Intel graphics chipsets unless its a really recent one (4500) but then if you get the choice of a Nvidia or ATI option take it.

Edited by: Inqy on 06/02/2010 11:14:27 It might be worth popping into PC World my local one has a sale on and there are some acer 6930 and 8930 models for around the ú400 mark capable of playing Eve and come with a blue ray drive and dedicated GFX cards and 16 or 18.4" screen.
If its a laptop for space it might be worth considering the all in one pcs' to.
If you are going to PC World or other retail outlet I would take a copy of eve on DVD and install it and get them to hook you up online so you can run a live test and haggle the price whilst keeping the staff entertained

Edited by: Che Molex on 06/02/2010 12:30:57 . I use a Tohiba Satelite A305-S6905 Yes - that's a US version and a year old ( early 2009 ).
Since CCP dropped the Classic graphics version you'll need something to do Pixel 2.0 shading etc.
So the key part above was: Mobile Itel Graphics 4500MHD. Basically any named Radeon or nVidia graphics is better and more expensive.
FYI: This is my 3rd Toshiba after a Hitachi (97) and a Dell 8100 (~2000-01?) The Dell lasted almost 4 yrs untill a display issue made it funky.
The Toshiba's have been cheap and rugged. The 1st was run over in a parking lot and the 2nd couldn't do EVE as the Classic was disco'd so I gave it away. I travel 200+ days per year with the laptop in-out of bag and truck daily.
Re US road connection: Virgin Mobile sells a "BroadBand2Go" USB stick here that uses Sprint's G3 network, excellent coverage in eastern 2/3rds of US if any 50k city -or- <15 miles to freeway. 20$ has been getting me 30 days and 250MB. I can play EVE 4 straight hours before bed and only use 10MB ( 15 mins of youtube and I've used 50+ ).
Sum : Toshiba, Virgin Mobile, and EVE = Happy :) .
