I have followed the steps on the wiki to setup Wine and setup eve. I downloaded the winetricks fonts and stuff and installed the nvidia drivers. The splash screen starts and holds for a while and then disappears followed by a bunch of nothing. I noticed there are some kernel changes that supposedly resolve the issue, however the ones posted appear to be for the 32bit distro. Does anyone know how to get it working with Ubuntu 64?

Edited by: Inegma on 01/02/2010 10:06:06 Installing on 64-bit system is basicly the same, you just download the .deb files for 64bit instead.
go to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32/
download:
linux headers all linux headers amd64 linux image amd64
follow the guide but instead of the 32bit .debs download and and install those files in that order.

It's not well known, but also make sure you've run "winetricks d3dx9".

I installed the 64bit kernel changes rebooted into it and made the update changes to the nvidia drivers to make sure everything was up to date after making the changes. Now eve gets to the splash screen and dies out with an error saying the program stopped responding as opposed to no error message. Any other ideas?

That sounds similar to the issues I experienced after the patch.
While I use Crossover Games instead of plain vanilla Wine, the solution is probably the same. You can find the actual details below, copying a message of mine from the Crossover forums for EVE Online:
--
In my case, it was somehow related to the BITS service, and I was able to launch the client again by using the workaround described in WineHQ. In brief, the workaround consists on editing the "prefs.ini" file, found in the Eve Online program folder, changing the value "bitsCancelled=1" to "bitsCancelled=0":
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=18563
Note that EVE will set this parameter back to 1 on startup, so you will have to update "prefs.ini" every time you want to run the game. It is therefore recommended to use an script to launch the EVE client, automating the above change. An example of such script could be the following:
Quote: #!/bin/sh # Disable BITS sed -i -e 's/bitsCancelled=1/bitsCancelled=0/' "$HOME/.cxgames/EVE Online/drive_c/users/crossover/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/prefs.ini"
# Launch EVE Online /opt/cxgames/bin/wine --wait-children --bottle "EVE Online" --workdir "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE" explorer -- /desktop=EVE,1920x1080 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
As you can see, I have EVE installed under a bottle called after the game (i.e. "EVE Online"), and use a virtual desktop with a resolution of 1920x1080. Just replace these with your own values (also in the path given to the "sed" command), and you should be able to run the client again... assumming you are experiencing the same issue I did, that is.
Good luck :)

Edited by: checkplz on 02/02/2010 21:45:26 I went to test making the changes to the prefs.ini file. Mine however didn't have a bitsCancelled field. I tried adding it and running eve but nothing seems to have changed. Does eve maybe need to run once to setup the bitscanceled in the prefs? Below is everything that was in my prefs.ini file.

I don't think so, though, even when fixing the "bitsCancelled" parameter in "prefs.ini", I often need to launch the EVE client a few times (i.e. killing any processes left over between attempts) until it succesfully starts.
Note that, in my case, I was able to run the EVE client exactly once, with the latest patch, after the installation. Then, "bitsCancelled" would be set to 1 in "prefs.ini", and I wouldn't be able to execute the game again until this value was changed.
Perhaps you are experiencing yet another different issue? :(
