Howdy folks,
I've got a small but important update for you all.
Our anti-lag taskforce has isolated a couple potential fixes for the fleet issues! Now, before we get too excited, these are still potential fixes, meaning we need to test them out and see if they work. There may well be more that's needed to be done before we can say that this issue is resolved.
I don't want to go into too much detail about these fixes yet since we're not sure if they will work or not. We will certainly put out a proper report about the issue and what the fix ended up being, once we've gotten the issue resolved satisfactorily. Until then, we really need to get these potential fixes into testing.
Because we've got these candidates for a fix, we will be adjusting our tactics here slightly:
We have 2 potential fixes, which we need to test both together and in isolation, we will need to run 3 versions of the jump tests. We will setup a set of 3 systems onto nodes with the new code, for each fix independently as well as another set with both fixes. We will then need to test jumping through these test systems several times, with a large number of pilots, and see how well these fix candidates work out.
And for those complaining about the timing of the tests, I'll say this:
Because of the critical nature of this issue, we need to ensure we run these tests when we have the most resources behind it to do all the debugging and data gathering that's required to get to the bottom of this issue as quickly as possible. These test events require a lot of coordination, preparation, and manpower behind the scenes and running them at 4-5pm GMT is the optimal time for us to get all these resources together for something as important as fixing this issue.
That being said, we will be running more standard versions of these mass-tests in the near future and on a regular basis, these tests will be scheduled much closer to prime-time.. again, I will be putting out full details about this in a blog in the very near future.

Question: Will there be a PATCH to apply prior to the test?
I ask because there is none at the moment and I will have just one hour to prepare before the test time.
Keep up the good work.

You should be able to use your TQ client to connect to Singularity for this test.

Should I be able to log in with my normal account? It keeps saying that my password is wrong, which it's not because I can normally log in to TQ.
If you use your normal account, will anything affect your wallet / items / status in TQ?

Thanks CCP for responding to a complaint of mine from the previous fleet test. Having a good description of what this test is meant to accomplish and what players will be asked to do should really help to keep things from becoming as disorganized as the previous test. I'll try to make it there. _____________________________________

You know what might be a good idea? Take 2 days worth of cycle time from TQ.. Go into prolonged downtime, allocate all resources that the server can handle on a few select systems. Use 1 day for allowing people to log in and move them to one of those systems, then the next day for mass testing in those systems. More pilots, the exact same hardware as a normal day spread over to about 50-100 systems? Let people fight a bit, do some other things that usually happen, do some specialised testing, 2nd day ends with loads of data to be mined. Put back a backup from 2 days ago leaving everyone where they where and basta. Might take a bit longer to plan/organise/ensure safety/manpower hungry but i'm sure over 50% of the playerbase is all for a better EvE and is willing to play on a "fake" TQ to help aleviate lag sources etc. Give a 2 or 3 day automatic extension to each account for the time it took to help you test and everyone is happy.
Simple version / hard profesional version is for you CCP'ers. Might just also be a tremenously stupid idea but mehh../care ___________

Whilst I'm sure CCP would quite like to do something like this despite the effort undoubtedly required, the RAAAAAGE on forums would likely result in the destruction of several blocks as the forum servers exploded.
Imagine the hating that goes on when tq is late up after a patch, multiply by several million, people want it fixed w/o any effort or effect on themselves (see typically paltry turn out s for sisi testing sessions ) .

Feedback:
1. Desync: I had 2 clients online at the same gate. One of the clients suddenly desynced, making it look like I was the only one on the gate. I saw several reports of this happening to others too. Wasn't desyncs fixed?
2. The jump-lag: The first 2 jumps we did were excellent as far as I could tell. The Poit -> F67E-Q jump was very laggy from what I could tell. The last one after that was somewhere inbetween.

Masstesting 4th veb. feedback: all other jumps where ok, but last one made problem. System was loading like 30 sec. ( and if this was done saw empty space , no ship) + grid load was like 20 sec. long + FPS was in some moment 3,9 closest camera. I had no brackets and all efects where turned off... if I zoomed out the FPS went up to 90 + and then back to 20-30.

Next time, send eve mails to the leaders of the major 0.0 alliances and ask if they can provide pilots. I'm sure that the turnout would be enormous, fleets, caps n all.

Originally by: Daedalus II If you plan on doing this often, why not add some sort of scripted client? Those who want to help then leave their computer and the script client running. When you need to test something you upload scripts to the script client which then does everything needed without us users having to do anything more than downloading the client and leave the computer running.
Use BOINC distributed computing maybe. Run the scripted client as a screensaver. I second this vote.

While I understand where you're coming from (I put some thought into that too) the RAAAAAAAAAAGE, as you put it, comes from the dt being prolonged etc. People are always expectation creatures. Put them in an expectation cycle and they'll go emo when that expectation turns into disappointment. Planning is key here.. Simulate how long such a massive test would take. Plan carefully, update the client way in advance so the flash screen will flash with the date and exact time the testing will use and leave it there until testing begins or something. Use all other means (as ingame info box popping up and such) to state the exact time it will take for TQ to turn back to normal (always add 20% for when things go unexpectedly south for a bit and if it finishes early everyone is happy) and you alleviated all issues with the rage people.
It's all good and dandy that the test on SiSi made good results but the past has proven that no matter what you do and how well the tests went, SiSi is not TQ in any way and as such issues will always creep up on TQ that couldn't be properly simulated on SiSi due to differences in hardware and architecture. Don't get me wrong though, I still applaud the effort CCP has taken to do these mass testings and will be present time permitted. I'm all for a better EvE every day eventhough I generally don't have any of the issues big fleets and such are confronted with.
Edit: Better yet; Try to re-enact some of the massive battles where people have lost dozens of ships due to lag/desync/black screens/no grid (like the one with 4 PL titans) Might work very well in identifying and targeting issues? |
