Hi,
A friend of mine plays EVE too together with his wife. They play together and share two accounts with each other where they have different characters on. I asked him that it might be illegal to share the accounts, but they laughed and said that it doesn't matter since they payed the accounts together and also play from the same room, live together, are married etc. etc. and all other RL things they buy together too. The accounts are also payed from the bank account which they own together.
Do not get me wrong, I have no worries against them and it is perfectly OK for me. But I just would like to know if I am right or he is?
From another guy I know the trouble when getting divorced. It would be interesting "who gets the car, who gets the house and who gets the eve accounts"

account sharing is illegal in all the mmos I have played, and well so far I haven't heard of anyone being banned for it, just when the rip off comes the gms tend to not have sympathy.
but hey shared assets get blurry, such as child accounts, and whatnot. although ccp would likely have a hard time proving the account sharing as both accounts are in the same house. that and as long as nothing bad happens not really any reason for ccp to want to do anything about it.

Quote: YOUR ACCOUNT You may establish only one (1) account for each copy of the Software licensed. If you wish to establish another Account, you must obtain another license for the Software (you may be able to do this by purchasing another boxed version of the Software or from the EVE Online web site http://www.eve-online.com).
A. Establishing a New Account Upon establishing a new Account, you will be entitled to play EVE for up to thirty (30) days without paying the subscription fee (the "Trial Period"). If your Account is not terminated in accordance with the procedures set forth below within that thirty (30) day period, you will be charged the subscription fees as described during the registration process when you established your Account.
Only an individual, natural person who is an adult or, in the discretion of such an adult, his or her minor child, may establish an Account. You are responsible and liable for all activities conducted through your Account, regardless of who conducts those activities.
You may not share your Account with anyone, or allow anyone other than you personally (or your minor child, if you have registered an Account on behalf of your minor child) to access or use your Account. Joint or shared ownership or use of an Account by more than one user is prohibited.
Accounts may not be used for business purposes. Access to the System and playing EVE is intended for your personal entertainment, enjoyment and recreation, and not for corporate, business, commercial or income-seeking activities. Business entities and anyone who is acting for or on behalf of a business or for business purposes may not establish an Account, access the System or play EVE. Accessing the System or using the Game for commercial, business or income-seeking purposes is strictly prohibited.

The semi-official position was that even trying to enforce this rule for people in the same household would be pointless. So "in-house" account sharing, while somewhat frowned upon, is never actually punished. Get out of the same household, and things can start to get nasty depending on how the situation is handled by the players.
Anyway account sharing alone in general is really only punished when particularly egregious instances of it happen, and even that not always... remember the "cynonet" scandal of old, for instance ? Do you think all accounts involved got banned ?
And there are many grades of account sharing... ...on one extreme, it's one thing to keep an account "alive AND ACTIVE" 23/7 by sharing it with one or more people while gathering large amounts of ISK on it (which is a VERY BAD thing for CCP all by itself... and even worse if that sharing is used to fuel a RMT op, in which case a ban is eventually guaranteed either way) ...and one the opposite extreme, it's a completely different thing to "babysit" a friend's account without incidents and with good intentions while not earning any ISK on it at all (which is actually a GOOD THING FOR CCP, and they would be crazy to actively pursue punishment for it)
So, yeah, I would argue that some instances of account sharing are actually beneficial to CCP. Not a lot of them, but some. You know, case-by-case scenarios and all that jazz. Household sharing, while not beneficial to CCP, is sadly as good as unenforceable, so don't expect them to do anything about it unless one of the household sharers slips up and does something else stupid to break the EULA in some other way. In both cases, CCP would have no good reason to punish it because it doesn't really hurt them all that much.
Good thing that the EULA lists things CCP is likely to punish you for (if they so choose), not must/will punish you for (yes, they can just ignore you even if you infringe the EULA, if it's in their best interest to let you break it). Right ?

Account sharing is ok until one of the people rip off the other, then both get banned.

Fixed That sums it up in far less words and is most likely quite accurate

So in other words share the accounts at your own risk, if bad things happen you will not get any help.

There isn't any real way CCP can tell who is playing the account in this scenario.
All they see is the connection from a similar location to last time, until they get to see inside your living room, they don't know if it's all just you, you and your child, you and your missus etc.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

Don't ask, don't tell and no one cares especially not CCP.
But, don't get into a fight where one robs the other's character, changes email/password or simply deletes the other's character and then make a petition about how 2 people share an account ending in "he did, she did" in a RL fight/divorce.
