Edited by: CopyCatz on 06/02/2010 11:33:59 Is anyone playing eve on a Dell Alienware M11x yet? I think this will be my new gaming netbook if the price here will be right. My aspire one barely runs eve but I think this one should be able to run it smoothly. Any experiences with battery use etc.? I know it's on sale on the US and German Dell sites, unfortunately it isn't available here in Holland yet...

Reading the review it say it last 2h during gaming.
I just configured up one of these on the Dell UK site and to have it running as per the review is ú1100-1200 so nowhere near netbook territory. Also I didn't see any option to add internal 3G connectivity, sure dongles work but not a nice clean option.
I use a Dell XPS m1330 with the GS8400m graphics option and it can handle EVE pretty nicely so the GPU in the M11x should make it fly in high shaders.

With Alienware, you pay a premium price for a fancy case and some pretty LEDs.
You could more than likely get a system with similar performance cheaper elsewhere if you shopped around.

Yes, Alienware is definitely overpriced (I wouldn't buy one). However they have the only netbook with a decent GPU as far as I know.
As soon as you jump up to 15" you get the best price performance from any laptop, that doesn't help people who want small and yet powerful systems though. When I got the m1330 two years ago it was the smallest laptop with a dedicated GPU.

Some of the new asus netbooks with nvidia ion will run eve pretty well.
Or you can foot out less and build a desktop PC, but yeah you lose the whole mobility factor with that, but it definitely saves money.

I'll admit Alienware is overpriced. But unlike the "Apple" overpriced, there is some usage that I would get out of an Alienware. I probably would still get a different manufacter, but the M11x provides a computer that fills a usage of both fun and work in one package. It has 6-8 hours of battery life (great for when using it during classes or projects) and it has a discrete graphics card that I can use when I'm playing my games. All in one, light package. Although I think it is a bit overpriced for the processor it has, I would love to get one.

I just ordered one of these, actually, as I'm heading back to the middle east and needed a new portable PC for entertainment. Seems the ideal package for my needs, but I agree it's somewhat pricey. If you didn't have to carry the thing around constantly, a 15" system would definitely give you more power per dollar. Once I have my hands on the thing in a couple weeks, I'll try out EVE on it and post my experiences.

Performance wise, you'l be fine on eve. The games included in the review are FAR more resource hungry than eve, and it still runs those at average of 40fps with high settings etc.
You should be able to get a stable 60fps for the most part.

I use a Dell Studio 1555 that cost me ú500 off ebay brand new, and it runs Eve without any problems, graphics chip is an ATI 4570. Plus it has one of those awesome Product RED designs
You dont need a super duper high end gaming lappy to run eve, i play at 1366x768 with everything on max and it runs smoothly.

Is there a reason you (anyone?) needs a "gaming netbook"? Yay for portability and all that but the whole point of netbooks has always been that they're cheap low-power portables *not* for advanced applications. Not to mention one of the defining traits of a netbook is a tiny gaming-unfriendly screen.
By all means, give it a shot, but it just feels like you're trying to listen to a brand new huge HDTV with earbuds.

1st, Alienware is overpriced
2nd, that review says it can run Dirt2 and other modern games at 20fps minimum... this means EVE will run at 50fps+ for sure LOL...

Alienware has actually come down in price since Dell bought them. I dont believe that the price difference is THAT much when it comes to laptops. My buddy got an Alienware laptop that crapped all over my gaming laptop (Gateway P7811-FX) for only about $100 more. Now, when it comes to desktop, which you can buy piece by piece, that's where you can really see the money you can save.

I own an Alienware Area 51 laptop that is now just 2 years old. The GPU has burned out due to excessive heat in the machine. I went with a lighter GPU to avoid the extra heat, mine has the ATI x1400m 128mb. I always use a chill mat and make sure it is properly ventilated. No dice. The GPU melted through the thermal mats placed on and around it at the factory.
If you are looking for a primary gaming machine, my advice would be to avoid "gaming" laptops and just get a desktop. If you want a rig that will run the game on decent settings and run cooler, the regular Dell Inspirons run EVE great!
