I was 52/20, after laser surgery; 20/12.
When I look up at an aeroplane now, not only can I see it, I can see what they're serving in 1st class.
The surgery doesn't hurt, but gettin used to not straining is very strange.

HOLY **** ITS TOUCHING MY ******* EYEBALL MAKE IT STOP, AHHHHHHHH!!!!
Because I am going to be honest, I don't let many things touch my eye and it is a matter of quite some concern to me. Heh, pretty much what I thought when I went to the optician and found out I needed glasses/contacts.
My optician simply told me this: "when you're watching the telly or whatever in the evening, gently touch your eyeballs with your fingertip every now and then (make sure your hands are clean first!)". It was supposed to lower the squick factor and also retrain the blink reflex so the eyelids wouldn't send the contacts flying whenever I tried to put them in. You probably shouldn't try this without your own optician telling you to though. Don't want to be held responsible if you blind yourself...
Anyway, after mustering the courage to follow his instructions I quickly found that it worked; it didn't take long at all before I could poke my eyeball like it was nothing. Trust me, it's easier than it seems. Btw, the blink reflex still works fine for everything but my fingers/contacts, it's just a bit more clever now.
About lasers, I've seriously been considering getting my eyes done for a while now. My uncorrected eyesight is pretty good (better than many people seem to see with glasses which terrifies me to no end while I'm driving, but I digress...), but since I got hooked on contacts (Herzog called it) my mild myopia and astigmatism drives me crazy. Not too keen on LASIK, but I can definitely see myself getting a LASEK treatment. Takes a while to heal, but it still looks like the better option by far.
Too bad there are no such eye clinics nearby. Being a rather lazy sort, it would be pretty tedious to go to one for the pew pew and following checkups. |

The downside is that instead of just cutting a flap in the lens they dissolve it with acid which results in a month long healing time with the light sensitivity of a vampire (not the sparkly ones, you'd have an aneurysm) Okay maybe I wasn't clear how much of a p ussy I am but it pretty much precludes anything involving cutting into, firing lasers at, or dripping acid onto my eyeball.
They numb it first! you don't feel a thing, the only sensation is a rapid pulsing you feel on the eye and the smell of your eye cooking |

I hate all of you forever.
Nothing is touching, tearing while in, suppressing pain reflex's, breaking blood vessels, pus filled infections, burning with lasers, surgically implanting things into, melting with acid, poking my, smelling it cooking: Anything to my with my eyeballs you sickos. This thread was supposed to be about how great being able to see again was but now it is just a sick B-Rated Horror Movie full of Eye Screams.
/Grabs popcorn. I love this forum and hate you all for reasons unrelated to your posts.

Don't worry, I'm sure the nurse will word it in a much more science friendly way that won't leave you waking up in the dead of night in a cold sweat screaming. |

I can start on the habit of keeping you glasses clean, too, with details about how oily eyelashes spread the skin oils from the eyebrows all over the lenses until there is a sort of oily mist on them, stories about the funny stuff that exits the edge between the lenses and the frame when you clean it with a toothpick and stories about screws corroded by sweat.

putting something in my eye seemed a lot easier than showing up in middle school with glasses one day. they tried to stick glasses on me earlier but I could see well enough I wouldn't wear them. might be time to start thinking about going under the laser soonGds |

Do PRK custom, for the days when your lenses have to grow back you have goldfish vision. It's like a wide angle lens where objects are waaaaaaay closer than they appear |

IMXHO, corneas are not conceived to heal themselves, and whenever you force them to do so, they're going to age too soon with likely bad consequences.
How will behave a 50 year old PRK cornea? We don't know, but as far as our experience goes, growing back after being hit by a laser is not somehting that would happen too often in nature. They CAN heal, but, to what long term cost? "Unknown" is the only realistic word for it.
Admitedly, the prospect of blindness caused by long term consequences of laser srugery didn't appealed me back when my eyes still where suit for correction surgery... A hell of a lot better than a lasik one, lasik reshapes the entire thing, PRK is custom and make pinpoint adjustments to the right spots to get the light to focus where it needs to |

Or the hassle you go through when cleaning your glasses' nose pads and lose a screw. The ones on my current pair are not standard to repair kits; I ended up tying it down with a punch-block wire (tucked away to hide it) until I could visit the eye store for a fix.
Also, I'm surprised no one's talked about the Transitions and Crizal lenses. I went to a Transitions lens in the current pair and (other then them not turning on inside a car) they work like a treat. My second pair are rec-specs as (at the time) I was doing a lot of MMA stuff (which was one of the drivers for the most recent glasses - they flew off too often ).
I may have come here from Myst Online, but that does not make me any less bloodthirsty than the average Eve player.
Just more subtle.

ohhh the trials of getting old . im approaching middle age (45) and my eye site is starting to get a little bit worse i`m starting to struggle with reading the bloody newspaper which sucks the left one a bit much ....the only comforting thought though is that most of the geezers my age that drink in my local pub are all starting to sheepishly pull out thier reading glasses ( i have yet managed to pluckup the courage to go and get a bloody pair)
the **** taking when I eventually get them will be horrible especially as I wear bloody hearing aides aswell |

I never experienced that as I never wore metal frame glasses... I use resin(?) frame as my lenses are way too thick and heavy for a metal frame.
Of course, resin has its own issues... mostly aging and breaking apart, something that happened twice to me. Over time, i've broke 3 frames and 2 lenses, fortunately before I started using lenses made of high refraction glass (those beasts are expensive).
