I've recently decided to go full industry with three characters. I've been reading up on the manufacturing and research guides and I really like the sound of it all. The one thing that has confused me as I start my new quest is the station slots for ME, PE and copying. I.e. there are none freeā..ever.
Am I correct in assuming that they are in such massive demand that it is highly unlikely I'll ever get the opportunity to copy any BPO's unless I anchor my own POS with Laboratories?
Just to be clear, this doesn't bother me, rather it is a challenge I'm looking forward to taking on. It is only, I'd prefer to find out there is another way of doing this before doing and spending everything necessary to get a pos in 0.5.
Thank you for your answers in advance. :)

You can use as well these full slots. Your job will than started when the other is done. And yes, this means there are long waiting times for each research job.
If you dont want to wait, your only way is a POS.

The problem you are describing ( all npc lanes full ) is main reason that highsec POSs have become so popular in recent years. Having POS(s) gives you ultimate flexibility in setting up private research/manufacture facilities with plenty of lanes and no waiting. Your corp will need faction standings to anchor one, though, but that is not much of a problem these days as you can simply buy a corp or have one made that fits your standings requirements. If you have the initial ISK as startup/operating capital and are serious about science/industry aspects of game, having one or more highsec POS is the way to go.

Edited by: Lord Fitz on 09/02/2010 15:58:12 Ah, back when I started playing, there was such a thing as all research slots taken. These days, you can a) Add your job to the queue and it will start when the current jobs finish b) Go into lowsec / 0.0 where there are plenty more slots with shorter queues c) Put up your own POS d) Join a research alliance (for ME/PE that doesn't require materials only).
The main reason NPC slots are busy is because they're terribly cheap.

Thanks very much. Well, i'm the CEO of a 5 man corp :) We are all friends in real life so are all on at the same time and are quite a tight-knit group. I've been playing almost 2 years so don't have any issues raising capital when needed. I realise the startup costs will be huge for a POS but then i'm treating this like a long-term project. I won't be rushing into anything too soon.
My corp standing is currently at 2.35 with Caldari so i guess it is with them i'll be doing the grinding. However, i'm not entirely sure how long it will take to get to a standing of 5.0 if all we have to go on is the storyline missions my corp manage to complete. i understand that killing rats in a certain part of 0.0 will also raise the corp standing but again, i'm unsure how much of a grind that will have to be.

Welcome. Your setup sounds very similar to mine ( we are only 3 RL friends though ). That makes for a good group to help setup and maintain one or more POSs. Standings is a subject on which I'm pretty familiar ( its one of my businesses ). You can contact me in-game if you wish to discuss further.

Karadan, you could run the Cosmos agents in the faction space you want to live in, that should boost you up quite quickly with having to grind missions.

Just some numbers from the first pos i used: Small Caldari tower: 100 mill. 2 Mobile Labs: 180 mill. 1 adv. Lab: 150 mill.
This setup need currently around 2 million ISK on fuel per day. This give you 5 Copy, 8 ME, 6 PE and 12 invention slots.
