Soulpirate wrote:Ishtanchuk Fazmarai wrote:It's not that easy. Albeit they could import the geometry, the tough work is with texture, lighting and effects, and all those are related to the engine and can't be exported from DUST to EVE or vice versa.
Actually, one of the moot points with having en engine for DUST and another for EVE is that building the same stuff in both games would require 180% of the work of building it for only one of them. It's not like doing everything twice, but almost.
In a sense, EVE is too good for its own good, as if EVE used DUST's off-the-shelve engine, developing WiS for EVE would be quite faster and easier. Put bluntly, you need top notch dvelopers to make EVE, whereas the industry is full of people who can do a great work with standard engines, for a fraction of the cost, and in places like Shanghai. Standing on the shoulder of giants it's easier than being a giant yourself. I can't imagine it's as hard as you think. You feed the two engines the art work and geometry, and they render it all both in their own way. They won't look exactly the same, but that shouldn't matter, as long as the network is providing the same info about who/what is where, the engines will do their job for either platform. Kinda like how you have multiple web browsers accessing the same web pages.
Well, maybe that was true 15 years ago, but not today. Present day graphic engines are very specialized and you can't just fit a cog from a Volvo into a Ford and expect that the engine will keep running because a cog is a cog.
It's not about just rendering it, it must look perfect and don't kill the fps. And this means making a set of maps for every engine, and precisely this is what takes the longer. "We want your help to convince management to develop Incarna into 3rd person shooter dungeon raiding with friendly fire in nullsec space..."

I was really hoping it would be easy.
This thread is a loss, there is never any good news about WiS.
Is it just me, or do we know less about WiS today than we did when we were told about it going to the back burner? I get the feeling it isn't even in the EVE kitchen anymore, and if it is on a back burner, it's in the greasy spoon down the street.

I'm sure Incarna is a touchy subject in the CCP offices these days, and its not surprising that the company is trying to tread very carefully around any mention of it. Quite so. The answer, IMO, is to be open and frank with the players about the current state of the project, what can realistically be achieved in the next 6/12/18 months, and to have an ongoing converstion with us as stakeholders in the project. Let the SiSi client be their ambassador. Let's hope they've learned to listen to feedback and not repeat unified inventory 1.0
Lets face it they can improve flying part of the game over and over again and still people are not satisfied . If Dust has social areas ,then vanishing the blog is not an CCP decision ,but an all exclusive Sony decision |

That's prerfeclty coherent with how WiS currently is less than it was in 2008.
Be noted, we are waiting to see if our 7-devs dedicated team is able to deliver in winter 2012 the sleeve tattoos that should had been a part of Winter 2011... that and the still not delivered clothing is the only thing left of the Incarna release plans. Then there are the rumors on racial blending, which may come in 2013. Plus the dungeon raiding prototyping that can not be talked about i.e. they don't have any plans to start its production for 12 to 18 months at least. And that's all. The team have been as vocal as we can about the merits of putting it out but to no avail. We're continuing to try and work out a way of showing you work we're proud of and think you will like but for now our hands are completely tied.
Someone might want to remind those in power what false advertising is then. When CCP shared their "vision" with us they gave us the impression that they wanted to see EVE become what they provided as "teaser" content. The station environment, the strategic map room, the woman pulling a pistol out on the guy in the end. That was "your" vision. A ton of us loyal fans bought into it. Now the execs don't want to deliver? God I really do wonder why I keep pumping money into this egotistical, poorly managed company. They don't even really understand why the Incarna fallout happened to begin with. It was multiple things and WIS got dragged down with it when the CSM raged at CCP about it.
This thread is proof that a lot of people still want WIS to expand. Even if it's small steps. Expand on it. Make the TV in the CQ provide a station camera so players docked can "peek" outside. Give us a real MMO feel with the controls. Give us at LEAST a corporation/alliance strategic map room for both Dust514 uses AND EVE universe map with map options and tools that allow us to analyze multiple information streams at once. For example: more than one criteria for map coloring. Allow us in game tools to shade strategic areas. Give us arrow pointers and tiny fleet asset icons that you would see field generals using out on the battlefield. This would be a great way for FC's to plan visually.
Something is better than nothing and it's time to throw us a bone here.

actually I would not say dead but taken off the public shelf.
We as players expect to see a finish product to make comments on. So some of have been overly harsh on what limited moving boxes we have seen.
Then there are some who are afraid CCP will head back into the rut of incarna. I would not expect to see anything more till we see the POS expansion is almost complete and Null sec is has received a solid expansion under its belt.
By that time we will see a "Slice" of what could be and the the beginning of a slow release of WIS elements that will lead up to that point. While Space take well over 75% of the production.
Right now many of the teams are working in fixing what is broken deep down into the game, and building the connection to Dust. Only a few teams are available to work on the visible component of the game, and the work they are doing is no longer low hanging fruit. The Last thing CCP wants is to give the players the wrong idea that WIS is eating loads of developement time. So for now they may want to push it under the rug for a little while longer.
In about 4 months I do expect WIS to pop up its little head to say what do you think. for about 2 weeks and then go hide again in their slave work pen.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ For the guy who want to post on what he things WIS should be like. I would recommend putting it in this tread. Eventhough they may not be responding... I do feel their shadows lurking around. WELCOME TO BROWN LEVEL..... I'd love to have what was originally intended when Incarna was released.. but as other people are bound to say - not at the expense of other stuff. Lots of people had been waiting years for the WiS expansion, and they ended up getting a tiny box cell! The rage is still fairly fresh I sense, give it another year of so when people get bored of patchwork.
I waited years for it, and I didn't even blink when confronted by the CQ after all that. I did blink when a bunch of players went ape**** and stopped CCP from ever doing anything more with it, (for all extents and purposes so far), though.
Fact is, little box or not, what CCP did with the Character Creator is flipping amazing. I was amazed at the detail when I saw it coming into being and quite happy with it on release, barring a few discrepencies like floating eyelashes and head studs, and poor taste in jewelry with only very few exceptions, along with some weird stuff with clothing.
The rest was better than anything I'd seen before in a game, and only marginally less amazing than the CGI in movies and detail in high-end DirectX 11 benchmarks. It's awesome; unfinished but awesome. I won't cry if it never goes beyond this stage though.

Entire MMO's have been developed in shorter time periods. The way things are going, Duke Nukem forever will have taken less time to develop. Starvault managed to make Mortal Online, granted incredibly buggy, with like 20 guys in less time. I think Aventurine even built their own engine and developed Darkfall in less time then people have been waiting for WiS.
